Mamelodi Sundowns beat AmaZulu 1-0 in Durban

Posted: 15 February 2012 Time: 22:17

Mamelodi Sundowns kept up their push for the Absa Premiership title with a 1-0 win away to AmaZulu on Wednesday night.

Lebohang Mokoena, who recently signed a new contract with The Brazilians, was the hero on the night, scoring the only goal of the game with 10 minutes to go.

Sundowns were the first to launch attacks, with Punch Masenamela’s dazzling overlapping runs looking dangerous during the early stages.

Teko Modise had the first shot of the game in the sixth minute but it sailed over the bar, and that was followed by AmaZulu’s first threatening attack which saw Tshweu Mokoro try to play a through ball to the on-running Ayanda Dlamini, but he arrived late.

As the clock wound down in the first half, most of the play had taken place at the heart of the field and the goalkeepers had less to do, only called into action when taking goal kicks.

In the second half, the sides came out of the changing rooms with different tactics. Sundowns were the first to surge forward, once again with the blistering pace of Masenamela, but AmaZulu’s defence were up to the standard and managed to clear.

Ayanda Dlamini’s cross was then superbly cleared by Surprise Moriri, which resulted in a corner that Senamela sent in only for Dlamini to head wide.

In the 50th minute, a cross by Themba Zwane was well matched by Katlego Mphela’s header from centre of penalty area but a comfortable save by Tapuwa Kapini kept the sides locked at 0-0.

Debutant Anthony Laffor came on in the second half and sprinkled more life into Downs’ game as his speed and skill down the left flank meant more trouble for the Usuthu defence.

In the 79th minute the goal finally came; Themba Zwane’s cross was well tucked home by Mokoena from the six yard box.

After the goal, Sundowns looked revived as they threw waves of attack at the home side, with Laffor and Mokoena proving to be serious trouble down the flanks.

Moses Chavula should have leveled matters in the 82nd minute but was superbly denied by Moriri, who put his body on the line to concede a corner.

MthoweDawana, why ungayekeli lomuntu we-Chairman akhulume yedwa maar ngoba uya hhema. Ubhemile, wena umkhipha eplakini. mh.

As for Sikalekhekhe La-4, you can tell he always saw himself in Yellow and has always watched and followed the team closely, infact he could've scored on debut had he been a little bit selfish after doing some great work with Moriri on a one-two from the wing, he fits like a glove.

We have no reason to give this one away, soon we'll be asking them to catch the Yellow machine......if at all they can.

Brazil broe wam, I'm prepared to support anyone who shows me the effort, Mphela's been like this since he scored 17 instead of 34 goals after awol'ing, and in the process cost us title No.6.
Instead of apologising, he pulled a Pitso, and proclaimed that he's done so much for Sundowns and should be let go......I was like, Nx! Wa nyela mfano wa itsi!

Mphela will never make it in europe, the is no fight in that dog. He is lazy and expects the ball to be deliverd at his feet without labouring for it. Bench the guy or off load this overated pitso's boy.

@brazilitto, Katlego Mphela has got all my support, but his experience must come to play now, his lack of ENERGY, PASSION and DRIVE leaves a lot to desire.

I won't lie the team as a whole did WELL, infact they did VERY WELL against a tough nut like Amazulu, its just that Katlego Mphela doesn't want to be creative, he is always waiting for that favourite ACUTE angle position to score. His runs OFF THE BALL were non-existance yesternight, he was not giving the wingers support and options when they got past the Amazulu defenders, and when he's got the ball at his feet he didn't bring the TEAM into play.

I understand that oppositions extra plan against him however thats not an excuse for a LACKLUSTER performance from his side.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm very HAPPY about DOWNS performance yesterday, I believe the team played as UNIT, the boys worked for each other, the subsitutions were SPOT ON from Sir Neeskens, we didn't DOMINATE as I would have liked however we showed very good promising signs of a SUPER TEAM overall. And believe you me, we'll STAY at the TOP till the END.

I just want KILLER to increase his WORK RATE thats all cause that will benefit Mamelodi Sundowns F.C.!

Congrats to the Yellow nation for the 3 points, again i reminding all Sundowns fans that it will be between The Galaxy of stars against Bafana Ba Style.

Mamoduwe: u are unfair to Killer, those are not his strength, he cannot be creative, he does n't have that ability, he is a punisher and a finisher.

Sundowns is not playing to his strengths hence Neeskens preferd Nyasha over him.

@mtho4downs
Sandawana as a proud Zulu i'm offended by your comment, please refrain from using stereotypes- ukuhlekisi.
.
Anyway- sometimes we gotta look at the supply before criticizing mphela. as much as he showed no desire to win like he has done before, cheese and pele-pele were culprits in supplying a "quality" ball into the box hence the reason why Laffor had to come it.
It wasn't a pretty game last night- at times we lost the ball rather too cheaply however, i'll let last night's performance slide since it was our first competitive game in two months.

Good morning MaSundawana amahle and the majority: I believe a break will always have a negative on the momentum and combinations that have been established , already: yes there were a lot of mistakes but the understanding of football as fans is vital: if we are fortunate we will witness entertaining football in a couple of games (looking at three to four games from the weekend): we can't blame the authorities who put our league on hold but it had a negative impact on our players (but ke thanks Zambia who have several P.S.L players won the tournament)....as for three points away, I'm happy and Amazulu are one of those teams, Bay United....The Sky Is The Limit....Themba Zwane, keep on shining....

@KING, Killer is an international, he is experienced, he has shown us what he is made of before but lately he's in a COMFORT ZONE, he is suffering from "I HAVE ARRIVED" syndrome, his hunger, commitment and passion are questionable, period!

And when I talk bout creativity, I'm not refering to the skill/ability to TAKE-ON players, but tactical positioning. WHEN was the last Killer scored a header or a tap in?

I appreciate Killer's contribution throughout the years and I don't want the team to lose to anyone, but its TIME to pull up his socks. I criticise out of LOVE and PASSION.

@mamoduwe. I was also happy dawane with our overall performance. I thing that Sangweni from amazulu had a point to prove last nyt. First half he really giv our attacking midfielders some tough time. Then second half he became too confident and dat when we capitalize.

@king. Killer is not for sale, he will cum ryt. Unless you can giv us andile jali and happy jele( vele u guys will start to booi him when he returns from injury)

@sky kid. Mtho didn't mean it dat way, it amazulu, zulus uyangthola angithi lol lol.

@cheezos. I love dis boy. And please pitso don't select him or any ada dawane player for your match against iy'gora zase-senegal ezadlisa imali yami.

The Game: interesting read mate, The risk for Sundowns is that, they will be facing bottom teams at a critical stage.

Mamoduwe: Killer needs your support not criticism that is meant to prove a point, Some Sundowns fans are now comparing him to Nyasha which is not necessary. The issue of supply also come to mind.

Like The Game puts it nicely, Teams are stil rusty after the AFCON cup but those with quality have collected 3 maximum points.

@the game. It gud to read your comments dawane. Entertaining football is on it way I am sure about that. If u look at our midfielders ( teko modise, themba zwane and surprise moriri) no destroyer or what so ever, it was only ball players. Abo no 10 . We are doin it a barca way. Big praise to Mr Neeskens.
