Bloemfontein Celtic beat Orlando Pirates 1-0

Posted: 18 December 2011 Time: 17:35

Orlando Pirates' hopes of closing to within four points at the top of the table were dashed when they lost 1-0 to Bloemfontein Celtic.

The Buccaneers were hoping to up the pressure on Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs at the head of the table, but Clifford Mulenga's early goal saw Phunya Sele Sele to a hard-fought win that instead boosts their top eight ambitions.

It is also Celtic's first League win over Pirates since the 2006/07 season.

Ruben Cloete also got his marching orders in the 90th minute for a second yellow card.

After a bright start from Pirates, Celtic drew first blood in the 14th minute, when Mulenga controlled a ball in the penalty area, turned Rooi Mahamutsa inside-out, and then finished coolly into the top corner to make it 1-0.

Following Celtic's early strike, the Buccaneers began to move through the gears and dominated. A short while after a water break midway through the first half they should have pulled themselves level when Benni McCarthy got on the end of a great cross from Ndumiso Mabena, but the striker's scuffed effort was saved by Patrick Tignyemb.

Around the half-hour mark Mulenga began to exert his influence on the game again, first firing a missile of a shot just wide of Senzo Meyiwa's left-hand post before forcing the stand-in goalkeeper into a punch off his goal-line with a dipping free-kick five minutes later.

12 minutes after the restart Isaac Chansa made a half chance with a diagonal cross into the penalty area, but Thulasizwe Mbuyane was just unable to reach the ball.

With just under 20 minutes to play, the Soweto giants finally forced Tignyemb into a save of note: the Cameroonian goalkeeper had to move sharply to his right to keep out a McCarthy free-kick as Celtic were forced onto the back foot.

Yet Celtic still had a chance to kill the game off on 76 minutes when former Pirates striker Ezenwa Otorogu was gifted a shooting chance from a just a few metres out, but the Nigerian fluffed the opportunity.

In the 82nd minute another former Buccaneer, winger Phenyo Mongala, almost scored a sensational goal after he spotted Meyiwa off his line and went for a long range lob, but the keeper quickly backpedalled and made an excellent save to keep his side in the game.

However, Pirates could find no way past Celtic's defence, and even ended the match with 10 men when Cloete picked up his second yellow card for remonstrating with the referee.

It surely looks like bucs win has brought smiles among Hobo Hooligans n the only sensible person to save us frm this endless noise is NONE other than Bobby,,,,pls Bobby tell them not to interfer n celebrate ur family Vicotories but rather finds clubs to Support.

Hardy mabhakaniya but changing the winning team always bears negative results n i hope Leal has learned tht today.

Tsipaaa tse ntsho Tsipaaa until Sweswe R101 party for his team mates afta a dubious win last night.

I'll just come out with it, b honest & shoot straight from da hip. THERE'S NO WAY PIRATES WIL WIN DA LEAGUE THIS SEASON. It's not halfway thru da season & 5 games lost? I'm a bhakaniya & even we supporters must admit dat. Da only way 2 win it now is 2 win ALL our remaining league games; which is impossible. Clearly Leal has his favourites in da team & dat selfish b.u.m Chansa is 1 of them. Time afta time he lost possesion, too selfish 2 pass or make way 4 other playaz. And it's not da 1st tym he's played like this. Commentators were even lambasting him 4 his selfish play. If this was Europe, he would've been substituted 1st half & benched 4 da next 5 games.

Let's b honest, 2day's performance was poor! Tactics & substitutions poor! Finishing poor! Let's rather aim 4 top 3 finish in da league & try defend Nedbank Cup & do well in CAF Champs League coz expecting us 2 defend da league title is far fetched.

First of all congratulations to Celtic. Secondly pls refrain from using vulgar language here, that displays your upbringing. Lastly, we were expecting the results as we have just won a cup, we will regroup and its still early days to press the panic buttons. UP THE BUCS UNTIL CHIEFS WIN FIVE CUPS IN A ROW...

The fact that
Jali,Clate&Josephs were on the bench shows that they were match fit so i dont see any reason why they were benched?Another thing is that when ever we are losing @ halftime or the score is 0-0,the coach must learn to substitute right b4 the start of 2nd half especialy with the fact that our bench is always powerful. The coach must stop behaving as if early suastitution is ilegaly.

@matt9744, surely you speak for yourself and who needs to debate the zebras when there are negative fans like you, claiming to be a buccaneer but damn sounds like a lost zebra. You are not gonna win the league, thina, we will believe until the last srconds , same as last season, yes i for one believe we will be the champions and nothing no one say will change that. Chansa had a bad game, so what? The whole teams performance was poor, so what, we'll win nextweek then most of these teams that won on the weekend might loose then what will you say, fake juju. Just leave winning to the players and lets do what supporters do, support.

We lost because Leal tempered with the winning team.On this one,i dont blame Leal alone but also part of the ghost family who lack good understanding of soccer. What i mean is those people who keep on saying players must be rotated. What was the reason for benching Jali,Cloute&Josephs? So from today bucs fans must know that player rotation does not win games but merit is the answer. That Sekgolela once played for Celtic does not mean he had the Celtics keys.Hope we wl never again here bucs fans demanding player rotation. It cost (player rotation)Sunflops lig last season.Foot ball 101 was mastered @ the university of Orlando.
Ha ha haaaa!!!!!! What a joke. Where in the world the coach told by fans what to do, who to play. This coach is a joke and his fans. He's a real puppet. Since his arrival no difference he made compared to what Krol did for dis team. Also Khoza is a joke by not renewing Krol's contract and replace him with a dummy coach like Habbas

@Cza, zebra im not hardbroken at our loss, but am dissapointed with the way we played, no denying celtics were the better team for the first 20 or so minutes but we were never really up for this game, we simply didn't look the part, so why should my heart be sore as you put it? Nxa you won by brown envelope but are still proud, could only be a zebra. RICE BROWN ENVELOPE, RICE!! Chivs brown enveloped their way to victory, shameful indeed. We lost ,fair and square and yes that second goal was supposed to stand, so what? You on the other end is all smiles , sooo happy for bribing your way to victory, that jessica jezabel has no shame at all, people saw her at halftime ,coming outta bennett's rest room. Sies!! Stincking ,dirty madam.
