Bloemfontein Celtic beat Orlando Pirates 1-0

Posted: 18 December 2011 Time: 17:35

Orlando Pirates' hopes of closing to within four points at the top of the table were dashed when they lost 1-0 to Bloemfontein Celtic.

The Buccaneers were hoping to up the pressure on Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs at the head of the table, but Clifford Mulenga's early goal saw Phunya Sele Sele to a hard-fought win that instead boosts their top eight ambitions.

It is also Celtic's first League win over Pirates since the 2006/07 season.

Ruben Cloete also got his marching orders in the 90th minute for a second yellow card.

After a bright start from Pirates, Celtic drew first blood in the 14th minute, when Mulenga controlled a ball in the penalty area, turned Rooi Mahamutsa inside-out, and then finished coolly into the top corner to make it 1-0.

Following Celtic's early strike, the Buccaneers began to move through the gears and dominated. A short while after a water break midway through the first half they should have pulled themselves level when Benni McCarthy got on the end of a great cross from Ndumiso Mabena, but the striker's scuffed effort was saved by Patrick Tignyemb.

Around the half-hour mark Mulenga began to exert his influence on the game again, first firing a missile of a shot just wide of Senzo Meyiwa's left-hand post before forcing the stand-in goalkeeper into a punch off his goal-line with a dipping free-kick five minutes later.

12 minutes after the restart Isaac Chansa made a half chance with a diagonal cross into the penalty area, but Thulasizwe Mbuyane was just unable to reach the ball.

With just under 20 minutes to play, the Soweto giants finally forced Tignyemb into a save of note: the Cameroonian goalkeeper had to move sharply to his right to keep out a McCarthy free-kick as Celtic were forced onto the back foot.

Yet Celtic still had a chance to kill the game off on 76 minutes when former Pirates striker Ezenwa Otorogu was gifted a shooting chance from a just a few metres out, but the Nigerian fluffed the opportunity.

In the 82nd minute another former Buccaneer, winger Phenyo Mongala, almost scored a sensational goal after he spotted Meyiwa off his line and went for a long range lob, but the keeper quickly backpedalled and made an excellent save to keep his side in the game.

However, Pirates could find no way past Celtic's defence, and even ended the match with 10 men when Cloete picked up his second yellow card for remonstrating with the referee.

Rats will remain rats. Winning 5 cups in the last ten years, now they think they have arrived. Chiefs have won 17 cups in the last 10 years, and it is history. Rats still holding on to their cups. It's history Rats. You are as good as your last game. This victory I dedicate to Roger de SA and Eric Tinkler. Sies Rats you embarrass us as Sowetans, as you will not make it to top 8 come end of season. Rise Khosi Rise.

Ha ha ha, just lastweek we had made history, being the undisputed champs of mzansi, to my suprise there was little coverage everywhere, now we lost one league game and hell ,it's being discussed a about just all over, ha ha ha, did we really made this many enemies. What have we done wrong to all these people, i mean, we just won all cups and that is something fantastic, but clearly the haters dont think so. Enjoy this victory because there's most certainly alot of heart attacks coming. We'll bounce back wednesday and arrows will have to pay the price, laarsen just bought himself a little more time, spending christmas happy. Merry xmas laarsen, enjoy it. It's from the champs, we've already saved two coaches their jobs todate, the champs putting smiles on alot of peoples faces, hate them or love them, we still simply the best and will rule for eva!

We lost because Leal tempered with the winning team.On this one,i dont blame Leal alone but also part of the ghost family who lack good understanding of soccer. What i mean is those people who keep on saying players must be rotated. What was the reason for benching Jali,Cloute&Josephs? So from today bucs fans must know that player rotation does not win games but merit is the answer. That Sekgolela once played for Celtic does not mean he had the Celtics keys.Hope we wl never again here bucs fans demanding player rotation. It cost (player rotation)Sunflops lig last season.Foot ball 101 was mastered @ the university of Orlando.

Hola Mabukubuku. It looks lyk the TKO which eluded you for the past 75 years is the last trophy you won before returning to your habit of going for 10 years without winning.

We lost, we admit celtics deserves their victory, we know we played bad and are aware about our unfortunate dip in league race but you all still at our throats, why? Cant you read our comments? Perhaps some eyesight difficulties zebras and clowns? Yes we've lost but there's still a long long way to go. We'll just have to wait and see who's at the top when it matters most, not halfway through the season. We are confident we.ve got what it takes to achieve our goal, CAN YOU SAY THE SAME? Well we just have to wait i guess, no need to panic soooo early.
