Mamelodi Sundowns beat Santos

Posted: 30 November 2011 Time: 21:23

Sundowns recovered from a second half wobble to thrash Santos 5-2 in an Absa Premiership game played at Athlone on Wednesday night.

Santos seemed to be lacking a plan in the first half as the visiting side dominated all possession and made all the running.

The first goal came after just 11 minutes when Richard Henyekane skipped past Pere Ariweriyai and delivered a pin-point cross which was powered home by the head of Nyasha Mushekwi.

Sundowns’ dominance of the game was underlined in the 25th minute when Teko Modise made it 2-0; the skipper curling a free-kick around the wall and past Tshepo Motsoeneng.

The Brazilians remained on top for the balance of the first half, but failed to again trouble Motsoeneng, while at the other end Wayne Sandilands was a virtual spectator as the Peoples’ Team failed to fire up-front.

Santos looked far more purposeful after the restart and after Vuyisile Wana had his shot from a tight angle saved, Eleazar Rodgers pulled a goal back for Santos as he converted Tawonga Chimodzi’s cross from just outside the small box in the 51st minute.

The hosts were right back in the game in the 65th minute when Wana ran onto Tyren Arendse’s long ball and coolly put it over the head of an out-of-position Sandilands.

But the parity was only to last for nine minutes as the Tshwane side struck back with an excellent goal from Themba Zwane, who hammered home a powerful drive in at the near post.

And with 11 minutes to go the Brazilians ensured the three points when substitute Katlego Mphela broke through Motsoeneng’s attempted block and fired into an empty net from three yards out.

Mphela completed his brace with three minutes to go as he brushed off a couple of challenges before scoring from 16-yards out with a low curled shot.

thank you Trott Moloto for spending R1.6 million on a vodacom league player, Themba Zwena. sometimes we as supporter should also point out some of the good things for us but sadly due to favoritism in the south african media those good things sometimes go unnoticed.
Welcome done to the entire team- they played well- this goes to prove that the more chances you create the better your chances of winning the game by a big margin.
I am wary of chiefs- but IN NEESKENS I BELIEVE.
NB: I can't but think that should we beat chiefs by a big margin, V-V is as good as gone.

I Am happy we won. But we need to honestly admit that our defence is still in sixes and Sevens! we havent had a consistent defence in the last 6 Games! We also still are a First Half team! we almost gave the Game away yesterday! had it not been for the Quick Thinking Zwane to Push foward and create Chances we would have played to an Undeserved Draw! no Team surrenders a Two Goal Lead against a Lowly santos! 3. Things. 1. Lets get a Consistent Back Four. Mwanjale, Xulu, Masenamela and Daniles to Play at least four consecutive matches without interuptions. Ngubane is not a Defender! Teko played his Heart out! i see Selection headaches for Neeskeens come Sunday! do u start Mphela or Mushekwi or do u start them Both? Anyways Sandawana For Life until VV Wins the League For Chiefs

Sum kaak team needs to learn that matches r not won on this forum bt on da field of play...talk of the town was that we r a 45min team bt baphi bona? They havnt scored a single goal in over 270 minutes of play yet they wana talk of their mediocre team like they talkin bout the team of the moment. Masandawana let's kip the momentum n keep colecting points till they do as Bobsteak told them "go to hell n he will support his father's team emself" lol
