Tokelo Rantie nets as Orlando Pirates beat Jomo Cosmos 2-1

Posted: 30 October 2011 Time: 17:48

Orlando Pirates beat Jomo Cosmos 2-1 on Sunday, with Tokelo Rantie's goal handing them victory.

Rantie came on as a substitute and scored the winner three minutes from time, after Siyabonga Nontshinga had given Cosmos the lead on 29 minutes, and Isaac Chansa had levelled matters with a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Cosmos are yet to win a game this season, while Pirates are up to fifth on the table.

From the outset Cosmos knew chances would be few and far between and resorted to shooting on sight early on, but with little effect.

Two such examples came from Siyabonga Nhlapo in the third and fifth minute respectively, but both shots from just outside the 18-yard area went well wide.

After that, however, the Buccaneers took charge of the match and dominated the midfield battle, although they struggled to break down Cosmos' stubborn defence.

In the 20th minute Lucky Lekgwathi latched onto a corner-kick with a powerful header from the edge of the six-yard area, but his effort was superbly saved by Avril Phali, diving full stretch to his right to palm the ball away from danger.

Three minutes later a great individual run from Daine Klate saw him break down the right flank and supply a perfect cross to unmarked Bongani Ndulula 12 yards out from goal, but the Pirates striker tried a spectacular scissors-kick and only succeeded in scuffing his shot with the goal at his mercy.

Then in the 29th minute, very much against the run of play, a brilliant passing movement by Cosmos saw them break the deadlock.

Bamuza Sono created the chance on goal with a defence splitting pass that set Katleho Loke free inside the right edge of the 18-yard box. Loke fired a cutback into the box and Nonyshinga acted first, getting in front of his marker to side-foot the ball home from a couple of metres out at the near post.

In the dying seconds of the first 45, the referee wrongly adjudged Lehlohonolo Nonyane to have pulled down Rudolph Bester inside the box. Replays clearly showed Bester had dived to earn the penalty.

Nevertheless, Chansa stepped up to the spot and coolly slotted the ball home into the top left corner to make it 1-1.

Cosmos started the second half the better of the two teams, and came close to taking the lead again with two attempts on goal within a minute of each other.

In the 53rd minute Notshinga broke into the box and pulled the best out of Moeneeb Josephs' reflexes, as the keeper palmed his powerful 14-yard effort over the crossbar.

From the resulting corner Cosmos should really have scored their second goal but Thapelo Tshilo headed wide.

As Pirates pushed forward for the equaliser they left themselves exposed at the back and after a quick counter-attack Nonyane's free header was saved by Josephs, with his feet.

After surviving that scare Pirates did take the lead when Rantie latched onto a long ball from the back just outside the 18-yard box.

The youngster, in only his second match for Bucs, showed real composure as he drove into the box and beat one defender before firing home from 14 yards out, handing Pirates the victory.

Just a question: why is it that when Other teams especially Chiefs win with a low Martin against the small teams then we are called weak and when Pirates does the same they have done well? Given the acclaimed "galaxy of stars" they still struggle with small teams, what's the problem at Pirates for them not to beat these teams with the margin that would prove they are the best? Maybe you just an overrated team after all!!! We played against the same team and beat them with same margin and trailed against Cosmos!!! Talk about double standards!!!

Congratulatioons for turning the corner with the help of the ref Aka HLONGWANE FC

@Taudinho:If you realy a bucs fan then you are not serious. You cant talk of ngobeni who is too slow.He is the reason we did not win a lot of games.Remember what Ajax did to us last season coz of him Infact he is not a bucs material.

Bester was tripped as his left leg was clipped causing him to fall. If I am not vindicated by superslomos tomorrow on ExtraTime (SS) and SoccerZone (SABC), I will donate R1 000, to the charity of your choice. Please bro, put on clearer binoculars not the jaundiced view of the said duo!

Am not jealous my man, it's just double standard that WE supporters have...the camera angle from behind the goals showed it was just a dive no contact at all!!! Anyway I don't want to go into the details this goes to show that if refs are not well positioned they turn to make wrong decisions, just an honest mistake from the ref...yes other make questionable decisions as if it's intentional!!!! We all have our days, and CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU FOR A WELL DESERVED WIN!!!

I see an ostrich omelette on the faces of some Zebras and their stooges, TT & Willie when it becomes clearer that Mr Ref was spot on with the spotkick decision. This is while reeling from shock that Gqubule was not even mentioned in the farce that was called punitive measures for poor officiating.

The signs are showing there's tension in the club they are no longer attacking and coming to defend as a unit, If Igesund was taking notes pirates will not progress into the next stage of the Telkom Knockout

as for Legwati is he trying to get into a score sheet before retirement, he must just stop putting the defence under presure

I am a Khosi by birth and want to congratulate Rats on their win.it is surprising how Chiefa win yesterday was called scrappy by Pirates fans while theirs is a gud win while it is the same goAl margin. As for the penalty I think the ref made an honest error. I also thot it was a pen before I saw TV replays but then again if it was Chiefs who got the pen we wud be hearing lots of stories.

Are u for real ? Since when are players punished for missed tackles ? u should have left the biznis of defending a wrong penalty to ppl who can do it well.
