Free State Stars steal a last-minute goal against Orlando Pirates

Posted: 28 September 2011 Time: 21:30

Noah Chivuta scored at the death to hand Free State Stars their first win over Orlando Pirates in over a decade on Wednesday.

Ea Lla Koto had last beaten the Buccaneers in 1998/99 – also by a 1-0 score line – until Chivuta struck in injury time to hand the Free State side a narrow but deserved victory.

It is Pirates' third loss in the Premiership this season and although there is still a long way to go in the championship race, their hopes of defending the title already look under threat.

The hosts could have opened the scoring in just the fourth minute, but full-back Rudiger Gilbert scooped his shot over the crossbar.

Pirates also had early shots at goal through Andile Jali and Ruben Cloete, but both were comfortably handled by Stars keeper Kennedy Mweene.

Midway through the first half Pirates created a good opportunity to open the scoring through midfielder Oupa Manyisa, but he put his headed effort over the target.

Both teams struggled to create further chances and it was no surprise that the half-time score was 0-0.

The second half continued in much the same vein, but as the clock wound down it was the home team who gained the ascendancy and began to turn the screw on the visitors.

With just over 10 minutes to play, Stars very nearly broke the deadlock, as Brown got a shot on target only to see it cleared away from danger by Happy Jele.

The hosts continued to look the likelier scorers as full time neared, with striker Boitumelo Sekgobela shooting just wide of the near post on 84 minutes.

In injury time Ea Lla Koto were finally rewarded for their persistence, with Chivuta scoring direct from a free-kick to hand them a famous victory.

I CAN'T SAY I BLAME THE GHOST... WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE ANGRY AT THE TEAM. NOW SOME ANIMALS HAVE FOUND SOMETHING TO CONSOLE THEMSELVES WITH. THE COACH MUST CHANGE THINGS UP. SOME PLAYERS NEED TO BE RESTED. THE QUESTION I ALWAYS HAVE IS: WERE IS OUR STRIKER MSOWOYA?? THE TEAM BOUGHT A LOT OF PLAYERS PREPARING FOR CAF BUT I SEE THE SAME PLAYERS DAY IN AND OUT. WHAT ABOUT ROTATING THE TEAM AND GIVING OTHER PLAYERS A CHANCE?? I KNOW WE CAN STILL CATCH UP WITH THE TEAMS ON TOP BUT WE GOT TO STARTING GAMES NOW. I THOUGHT WE'RE DONE CELEBRATING THE MTN 8.

WE GOT TO GO ABOUT 15 OR 17 GAMES UNBEATEN IN ORDER TO GET BACK TO THE TOP. ONCE AND ALWAYS A CHAMP

If the last three games are anything to go by, the ghost have a right to demand answers. What the fcuk is going on? How's the team spirit? Does Jali get along with Benni? Is it not time to loan Mabena to Yebo Yes? Really now, Champions can't afford to lose 3games out of 7 and expect to defend the title. What happened to attacking like artists? Because we sure as hell defend like warriors. That creative spark and magic is missing somehow, I can't wait for Chansa, Juju and Tlou to be back playing and making sure we punish our opposition. Coach Leal, with all due respect..this is no child's play, it's The Treble Champs, The Dream Team , Galaxy of Stars that we're are talking about here. Teams of FSS's calibre should dread even seeing a Pirates shirt, we should be handing them football lessons with big margins (4-6 goals). The players and the technical team should unite now more than ever, the feeling of losing is miserable and should'nt be experienced by anyone associated with the Superbrand that is Orlando Pirates F.C.

Chibuku fans can celebrate Chiefs losses all they want but 1 thing 4 sure is that under this idiotic coach things are gonna get worse 4 them. Can you imagine wat will happen wen they start playing in Africa ? I can safely predict that under Lilian the best they can hope 4 is a top8 finish. In Africa I don't c them reaching KO stages.

Time will judge if Leal is a right choice. The platform was set for him.U can give ur players freedom on the pitch but also remember to mix it with good tactics.Football is not only abt players enjoying themselves as they must also use game plan.

MTHO4DOWNZ: thnks 4 ur sympathies. i get ur point...leal is best in in preaching in favaratism...the toothless chairman made wrong decisions...the lig is sliping out of ur hand as games pass by

on the topic: ja we lost n leal needs 2 b blamed. he can beat chimps n dunusas but that wnt win us the lig. i always said this samba thing frustrate me if opotunities are not created. its time the toothless comes 4wad n xplain the mandate of leal...entertainment or trophies.

im not a cry baby but our chairman sumtimes makes questionable decisions. wen will fans hve a say in the decision making of our team. we cried 4 msowoya, the gave us mabena, we cried 4 otorogu, they gave us fatty, we cried 4 a cover kiper as we struggled last season in that position, they buy us a brazillian injury prone

our concerns n that of chimps are the same. we hve gud slogans that console us but thats not enough. we are made 2 blieve that were up the bucs, yet teams on this surface such as free state stars are able 2 catch us. will we ever get a fair deal in our team. mr toothless takes us 4 granted...he promised 2 luk after bucs wen the world cup is over as things stand things were beta wen he was awol...

he sacked master krol wthout a valid reason, or he shuld hve shared wth us...he shut his toothless mouth n move on as nothing happened. krol was the best coach 4 bucs...n now we will hve 2 luk 4 a new one. more tropiless yrs approaching. wen will bucs hve a coach 4 5 yrs or more. i know we nid change of personal but not lyk this

toothless must sell the team if he cnt manage it. i just wish he was near...i was gonna gve him a hot clap...n increase his gap

Am starting to loose it wth this Leal cos we cant defend our tittle wth so many unnecesary loses to Marizburg n FFS where we shud collect max points.

How many chances does Mabena needs n when r u gona come up with ur tactics instead of solely relying on wht Krol build,,,Nxa

Its either u deliver or u ship out cos we cnt afford this yoyo performance frm any1

Bhakaniya by choice thru n thru.

Our main target is the champions league. I dont worry 2much as long as we gonna remain on the top 8. We will keep on consoling ourself with these useless cups like mtn8 (already in the bag) TKO and Nedbank cup. Once a pirate always champion!!
