Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns draw 0-0

Posted: 24 September 2011 Time: 22:04

The clash of the weekend between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns finished 0-0 but was full of controversy, seeing Punch Masenamela sent off.

Masenamela got his second yellow of the match when he tried to boot a high ball away, only to catch Sameehg Doutie in the face, correctly called dangerous play, and he was off for a shower in the 78th minute.

Mabhuti Khenyeza, meanwhile, was lucky not to have been in the showers with his teammate after some horrific over the top tackling; one of which caught Andile Jali just under his knee.

There were only a few genuine goalscoring chances, but between Khenyeza and Ndumiso Mabena, the opportunities were wasted.

In the 21st minute Khenyeza attacked the near post on a corner and saw his glancing header flash over the crossbar.

In the 28th, Bester came close to getting the ball under control with just Wayne Sandilands in front of him, but the Sundowns goalkeeper did well to save.

Then in the 32nd minute, a cross from the right was allowed to bounce inside the Pirates box and while Khenyeza managed to get his head to the ball, the attempt was put over Josephs’ crossbar.

Just two minutes into the second half Lekgwathi was put clear on goal, but his first touch was poor and Sandilands made the save.

Sundowns’ best chance came in the 52nd minute when Mphahlele’s brilliant cross found Khenyeza in a scoring position, but somehow he could not make proper contact with his head.

A few minutes later it was Mabena’s turn to miss a really good chance – he connected his shot well, but Sandilands was in a great position to make a save.

Overall the match failed to live up to expectations and will be remembered more for the rough tackling and tension between players.

@abijan95 you are a fool not to know that VV, won the Telkom cup (not Charity cup) twice in his first two seasons and his team finish third on both occassions. Last season they lost the league by a point to your stupid lucky team. I bet that the MTN 8 will be the last trophy for Pirates in the next couple of seasons to come. Back to VV, i'm very certain that he will win the league and another cup this season as well.

@Pear,

Mr le peare! Go on betting and you will lose your bet. You were betting that after we won the treble, we'll win a cup again after 10 years and what happened? Mmm? tell me? We won a cup after few months with a new coach and now you are betting again. What if we win the Telkom? Are you going to close that rotten big mouth of yours. VV winning one cup per season with the help of Gqubules is no achievement. All the coaches before him at Gqubule FC were handed one trophy by the referee, nothing new.
