Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns draw 0-0

Posted: 24 September 2011 Time: 22:04

The clash of the weekend between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns finished 0-0 but was full of controversy, seeing Punch Masenamela sent off.

Masenamela got his second yellow of the match when he tried to boot a high ball away, only to catch Sameehg Doutie in the face, correctly called dangerous play, and he was off for a shower in the 78th minute.

Mabhuti Khenyeza, meanwhile, was lucky not to have been in the showers with his teammate after some horrific over the top tackling; one of which caught Andile Jali just under his knee.

There were only a few genuine goalscoring chances, but between Khenyeza and Ndumiso Mabena, the opportunities were wasted.

In the 21st minute Khenyeza attacked the near post on a corner and saw his glancing header flash over the crossbar.

In the 28th, Bester came close to getting the ball under control with just Wayne Sandilands in front of him, but the Sundowns goalkeeper did well to save.

Then in the 32nd minute, a cross from the right was allowed to bounce inside the Pirates box and while Khenyeza managed to get his head to the ball, the attempt was put over Josephs’ crossbar.

Just two minutes into the second half Lekgwathi was put clear on goal, but his first touch was poor and Sandilands made the save.

Sundowns’ best chance came in the 52nd minute when Mphahlele’s brilliant cross found Khenyeza in a scoring position, but somehow he could not make proper contact with his head.

A few minutes later it was Mabena’s turn to miss a really good chance – he connected his shot well, but Sandilands was in a great position to make a save.

Overall the match failed to live up to expectations and will be remembered more for the rough tackling and tension between players.

I hate the way we play, there is no intensity really how long do we have to put up with cloete and mabena. Chansa will take mabena's place. Cloete is a weak link the same goes for thwala and mjephu. We need the young mxoyana only he can save us. Mabena was suppose to be taken out a bit early. All in all sunclows plays negative football what a bunch of losers. Football 101 was mastered by Orlando Pirates.

Under normal cicumstances Sunclowns shud be happy with a draw afta playing 12mins with 10 men away frm home nogal but in this case Chibuku shud be happy with the point.they were totally outplayed evn when sundoms were 1 man down.

Pathetic pie-rats failed to score against 10-man Downs. Typical. So Sundowns went there and played a hard game and these rats immediately turned into sissies - falling all over the place, begging the referee to dish out cards. Fact is u failed dismally against 10 men.

Hmm, I think the headline is a bit misleading. Sundowns played with 10 minutes for only few minutes. Overall, Pirates looked more inventive & quicker than Sundowns. Khenyeza's aggression troubled Bucs a bit, but without the creativity of Pelembe, Sundowns lack dimension. Otherwise, a point away is good for Sundowns. Khosi

Our coach said 'We must defend as a team, so I can't only blame the defenders' end quote: What I like about Downs players is that on this game, they showed a bit of dedication: we have to be aggressive when playing away and according to a bonus structure:a draw away is a plus: TALKING ABOUT THE SYSTEM, FIRSTLY Downs fans must bear in mind that a professional player must always adapt to every tactical approach, they must also learn to even play in their unusual positions: if they can't do that then they must play kuma-amisha ranks: we must play learn well kwi 4 3 3, if we consider ourselves a professional team: Moriri, played well and for sum Downs fans who probably came from Jomo Cosmos and Bay United, Downs has for years believe in so called 'slow players' yet quality players i.e Alex Bapela, Jersey Queen, Roger, Shai, Chancey Gondwe, as for Kekana-Quality, quality, quality
