Orlando Pirates were wasteful in front of goal but still managed to secure a 1-0 Absa Premiership victory over Santos at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.
A single goal from striker Ndumiso Mabena just before halftime was enough to give The Buccaneers all three points.
Santos made a bright start to the match and Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs had to be at his absolute best to keep out an effort from Vuyisile Wana as he turned the striker’s shot around the post.
Bongani Ndulula should have done better with a short free-kick awarded inside the Santos box as Zairon van Beulen’s backpass was inexplicably picked up by Lee Langeveldt in the home goal. The Pirates striker blasted his effort over the bat though.
The game looked to be drifting towards halftime before Pirates grabbed the lead as Mabena rose highest to head home Daine Klate’s corner.
Mabena might have made it 2-0 soon after the break but his shot misses the target with the keeper beaten.
Langeveldt produced an excellent save to deny substitute Rudolf Bester with his first touch of the game after coming on, while at the other end, Santos’ on-loan midfielder from Kaizer Chiefs, Siyabulela Songwiqi, forced a fine save again from Josephs.
Pirates continued to create chances but failed to find the back of the net. In the end, one goal was enough and Bucs take home the points.
