Mamelodi Sundowns beat Bidvest Wits

Posted: 13 September 2011 Time: 21:18

Mamelodi Sundowns held off a spirited fightback to defeat Bidvest Wits 3-2 at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Brazilians took all three points, but only just as they crumbled in the second half after taking a 3-0 lead into the break and looked as if they might double that score in the second half.

But Wits fought back well and Mbulelo Mabizela and Sibusiso Vilakazi’s second-half goals came in reply to a header by Surprise Moriri and Katlego Mphela’s brace.

Sundowns dominated the opening half and were allowed way too much space by a disjointed Wits, which saw The Brazilians fly into an early lead and pile on the pressure.

It was a shot by Mabhuti Khenyeza in the 11th minute that gave Sundowns a great start. His powerful drive was parried away for a corner and it was from that corner which Sundowns scored the opener – Moriri getting up well to head past the keeper.

The second goal came via Mphela’s head. A great chipped ball into the danger area by Teko Modise found Mphela, who got in between Derrick Spencer and Mabizela to glance his header across goal.

In the 29th minute Modise slid a ball through to Mphela, who drew the goalkeeper and pushed the ball past him with the outside of his right boot for a 3-0 lead.

Wits fought back and showed tons of character in the second stanza though, with captain Sifiso Myeni and midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi the chief architects.

Myeni delivered a telling free-kick to the far post in the 63rd minute which Mabizela calmly headed home at the far post.

Wits then had two penalty appeals turned down in quick succession, the second of which looked a better shout than the first.

Then in the 70th minute Sibusiso Vilakazi got a second for the home side, burying his shot at the near post following an excellent cross.

Wits continued the pressure as Sundowns struggled to even get out of their half. Mabizela came close to an equaliser when his long-range free-kick was tipped over the crossbar by Sandilands in the final six minutes, but Roger de Sa’s chances just couldn’t find the equalizer for what would have been an unlikely point.

Our players lack concentration, and their fitness level is questionable. It's gud 2 c Suprise on score sheet again!

A win is win, whether narrow or wide. It's to regroup after collecting three points. It gives good psycho. boost. I think lack of fitness is the case with our players.

at least nw some doubting thomases realise that kekana is a good player. Sundowns only problem is that they either start a game well and end it badly or the opposite. Bt 3 points is 3 points and nothng can change that.

Not a great performance by our boys and this kind of play has hunted us in the past losing to Pirates in the same manner tho we won this game. I agree with the coach the players are to shoulder the blame and they must change their approach of play we need to play 90min. But I'll quote Moriri “its the 3points that matters”

Last season we came back from 3 goals down for a 4 all draw with ajax. Dis is part of de game. No panic botton coach and players
I think our opponets are already sensing de yellow force. Asking themselves question like wat will happen if dis machine start to operate for the entire match. Mzansi u should brace yoself for a yellow summer.

Congratulations to Downs, they wrapped up the game in the 1st half whereby they took their chances well. Mphela showed why he is named Killer. Its nice to see Bafana players raising their game to the highest level to show that they play for the National team. From Injury to two great goals.

However I still think that Sundowns don't have a goalkeeper, why not try another keeper.

I read a few comments of sundowns supporters saying that they did not play 2nd half & which true did not but the referee in a robbed Wits of a legitimate penalty but i still say a great advert for SA football & now i hope teams like FS Stars will learn how 2 play cause they make our game boring by defending & doig there own things.

To be honest we played kak in both halfs. It just that we had three chances, from a lapse of concerntration by Wits (Mabizela in paritcular) in the first half and buried them.

I am however pleased that even though we played kak we managed to bag the htree points. Hope the lads take lessons from yesterday's game and we move foward.

Although I don't like to comment on players but the Suprise and Teko option is not sustainable. One should be compromised for Nyatama with Kekana shielding the defence. Both are not natural ball winners and open us space in defence. The less said about our "defenders" the better.

Indeed, it is de 3 points that matters, the teams fitness is really questionable, we manage to only play only 1 half of the game...but imagine if were are able to play both halves of the Game, that will be great to see, anyway we will get there. Good second half by wits, de referee was kak, they deserved a draw at least. Kabo yellow Masandawana

The mentality of these guys in wrong.. i don't know how Neesken will fix this one except by playing young and willing players who will play the entire 90 minutes from the first to the last whistle.
Kekane had to be taken out, he was sitting on a yellow- against ajax he'll be key, nevermind that Daniels will be back from suspension.
Mpela is proving his talent every week, the players needs to supported but it can't happen when our holding as well as attacking midfielders decide to sit back.
Otherwise, 'm not happy about last night.
@ Black n yellow.
Don't be a typical uneducated pirates supporter, learn to count properly- it's 4 wins not 5 unless maybe a draw qualifies as a win your books.

hey mongols! we played well and deserved the 3 points, people must understand that wits always give us problems. our defence was shaky as we had a make shift defence due to the suspensions of mwanjale and daniels.

Why all escape by lucky when they play Wits, I would like to commend Roger he got useful tim and Downs didn't deserve to win yesterday.

A bad 2nd half, but happy for maximum points.
The only team to beat Sundowns, is Sundowns itself.
