Maritzburg United beat Orlando Pirates 2-1

Posted: 24 August 2011 Time: 21:45

Maritzburg United pulled off a major upset on Wednesday night in beating Orlando Pirates 2-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium, but not without controversy.

Benni McCarthy’s opening goal was cancelled out by two second half goals by Diyo Sibisi and Mor Diouf – this after Bafana Bafana’s leading marksman ever was controversially shown a second yellow on the stroke of halftime for supposedly connecting a defender with his elbow, although replays show he was clearly just jumping for the ball.

It was Maritzburg goalkeeper Shuaib Walters who made the first real save of the game, when he saved a shot by Tlou Segolela following Thulasizwe Mbuyane’s cross.

But the goalie could do nothing about McCarthy’s opener – the striker making a clever and late run to get in front of Walters to stab home Mbuyane’s short corner.

Walters made a few good saves to keep the score down to just one and was definitely the busier of the two goalkeepers on the night.

But it was Maritzburg who turned possession into goals. The slightly overshadowed Pirates in the possession stakes - which would have been aided by the dismissal of McCarthy - and made it count in front of goal when they had their chances.

On 49 minutes they equalized through Sibisi – albeit fortuitously. Pirates failed to clear a corner, and Lucky Lekgwathi was the unlucky defender to kick the ball into the Maritzburg striker and see it rebound into the back of the goal.

The home side predictably had most of the play in the second half and eventually found the winner their dominance deserved – Diouf rising highest to head Peter Petersen’s free-kick past Moeneeb Josephs.

Substitute Bongani Ndulula almost got the equalizer late on, but Petersen produced a timely intervention to keep their goal intact – and secure the three points.

People lets be fair ,with or without Benni`s red card,Pirates if,they were to win ,they should have won. This shows us that they are not currently THE BEST SIDE,coz they cant withstand pressure.WELL DONE MARITZBURG for beating Pirates and come weekend SANDAWANA will add more harm to the already weak Pirates.I believe there was no controversy coz but Maritzburg deserved to win clearly.Remember,Maritzburg also missed chances whilst Benni was still playing, especially Olomu,so LET US NOT COVER UP Pirates` defeat with the word "controversy".If it were other team, there was going to be no controversy, but bcoz its Pirate who lost, controversy is used.NO NO!PLIZ ADMIT DEFEAT just as we did last season when we were clearly beaten 3-1 by Maritzburg.Shapa Maritzburg Shapa .You make us VERY PROUD by beating Pirates and we(SUNDOWNS) will finish up this job on the weekend MTN.As for Lekgwathi DO NOT BE A COWARD but be a professional. After ALL THESE YEARS of experience, you still blame a red card?Remember ,you wer 11 in the team and not 2(you and Benni) so pliz do us a favor by helping your coach change system/tactics to match 11 men if u happen to be 10,otherwise YOU WILL LOSE THE RESPECT which we have been giving you Lekgwathi pliz.On the other hand referees do make mistakes and we all know that but Pirates lost clearly. Also SHAPA SANDAWANA SHAPA MY TEAM.

Even Barcelona the world's best Soccer team can lose a match so the FOUR CUP CHAMPIONS were bound lose anyway. Congratulations are in order to the Team of Choice for beating an incomplete Bhakaniya side! Like Sox said on Soccer Ladumaaaa: "Downs better be careful" despite cable theft 'Gautrain' will invade Loftus Stadium on Sunday. UP DA TRIPLE CHAMPIONS!!!
