Maritzburg United beat Orlando Pirates 2-1

Posted: 24 August 2011 Time: 21:45

Maritzburg United pulled off a major upset on Wednesday night in beating Orlando Pirates 2-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium, but not without controversy.

Benni McCarthy’s opening goal was cancelled out by two second half goals by Diyo Sibisi and Mor Diouf – this after Bafana Bafana’s leading marksman ever was controversially shown a second yellow on the stroke of halftime for supposedly connecting a defender with his elbow, although replays show he was clearly just jumping for the ball.

It was Maritzburg goalkeeper Shuaib Walters who made the first real save of the game, when he saved a shot by Tlou Segolela following Thulasizwe Mbuyane’s cross.

But the goalie could do nothing about McCarthy’s opener – the striker making a clever and late run to get in front of Walters to stab home Mbuyane’s short corner.

Walters made a few good saves to keep the score down to just one and was definitely the busier of the two goalkeepers on the night.

But it was Maritzburg who turned possession into goals. The slightly overshadowed Pirates in the possession stakes - which would have been aided by the dismissal of McCarthy - and made it count in front of goal when they had their chances.

On 49 minutes they equalized through Sibisi – albeit fortuitously. Pirates failed to clear a corner, and Lucky Lekgwathi was the unlucky defender to kick the ball into the Maritzburg striker and see it rebound into the back of the goal.

The home side predictably had most of the play in the second half and eventually found the winner their dominance deserved – Diouf rising highest to head Peter Petersen’s free-kick past Moeneeb Josephs.

Substitute Bongani Ndulula almost got the equalizer late on, but Petersen produced a timely intervention to keep their goal intact – and secure the three points.

I knew that the judgement day will come, how can you play millitary soccer and call yourselves champs. Good decision by ref, next time please deal with the Midget all the sturborn boys should be showed their place. Oprhans should tell their fly by night University of Orlando to teach them the basics of soccer, if one player is red-carded that does mean the team has lost the match that is never an excuse. Stop studying short courses at the fly by night university and think that you will become graduates, at Chiefs we are professors we don't study anymore just equip ourselves with knowledge, we have research insitutions for any research you need about the basics of soccer feel free to contact any of us.

I happened to be in Pietermaritzburg this week & naturally went to the stadium to watch our team. I saw a lot of questionable decisions from the man in the middle & his assistants, they even overruled each other on few occasions. However, I cannot critique their decisions since I did not have a previledge of a replay. Those of you who had that previledge, help me.

It is also becoming a norm that whenever we are to play an important game the men in the middle always give our players red cards, especially when we are to face big teams. Tlou & jele were the prime targets last season, we prevailed therefore what happened today is just one of those hurdles that we will overcome with ease. Come end of the season, we will be Champions.

I was impressed by Mabena, he is improving, the boy can realy play. But I wish that he takes more shots at goal. Being at the stadium give you an advantage of seeing things that the camera cannot capture.

Last week I argued that players must compete on the same level but it seems like Lucky is given preferential treatment. He did not give much going foward in the absence of Jele. Maybe our signing from Tuks would have done better because he is a natural right back, would have played at home (PMB) and is hungry for a 1st team spot.

I was dissapointed buy some fans who were giving Thwala a hard time. We know what he can do. There is not other team where he can regain his form & fitness other than Pirates.

To all Chibuku fans complaining abt the ref I say stop the nonsense. The ref was 100%. Please stop being cry babies. Wuld you be saying all this kak if that was McCanteen's first yellow you idiots ? The answer is NO.

Didn't Eisbein McCanteen stick out his elbow ?
The answer is YES.
Didn"t McCanteen's elbow connect with the MU player cheek ?
The answer is YES.

Now what do you idiots want ? Did you want the ref to let it go just becos McCanteen was already on a yellow ?

Aren't yellow cards and send-off part of the game ? Now please shut up your dirty mouths and accept that you lost.
