Mabena goal maintains 100 percent start to the season

Orlando Pirates have maintained their 100 percent start to the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bucs, the reigning Absa Premiership champions, had to work hard for the three points in their first league match at Orlando Stadium thanks to a battling performance from Dikwena, who perhaps deserved more out of the game.

Pirates dominated the opening exchanges and created the best chance of the first stanza when Thulasizwe Mbuyane slipped a good pass to put Daine Klate through on goal, but the winger saw his effort blocked by Stars goalkeeper Jackson Mabokwane.

The hosts created a couple more half opportunities, but in general they lacked the necessary precision in the final third of the field to really stretch the Stars defence.

Dikwena created couple of decent opportunities themselves – Henrico Botes forced a sharp save from Moeneeb Josephs with a left footed shot from a tight angle and Thuso Phala saw one effort flash across the face of goal – but they too looked a little rusty in attack.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, though Pirates coach Julio Leal made a bold double change on the hour mark, sending on two strikers in the shape of Benni McCarthy and Ndumiso Mabena.

And it was the latter who was the hero on the night, scoring with glancing header on 66 minutes from Oupa Manyisa’s free kick delivery.

Stars pushed hard for an equaliser in the dying minutes of the game and had a couple of penalty appeals, but their inherently cautious approach cost them in the end.

To tell the truth, our offensive quartet of klate, segolela, mbuyane and ndulula are not aggresive enough.Lack of desiciveness, not wanting the ball at your feet and not pressurising opponents.a whole lot of them are playing below par.At this level players cant do basics simple. As for Leal,i dnt have a clue what kind of play is he instilling on his troops but points are most welcome.bhakajuju

@Poza i think he wants to teach them how to take responsibility of winning matches using thier own judgement, taking decisions individually on how to win....But it will take a long time to instil that considering the fact that our players are poor techtically.
What he wants needs briliant players..

But it is still the start of the season, remember this guy is a new comer.

The Bucs machine is stil warming up, I do not know what will happen when we reach top gear...we need this african games soon inorder to perfect othet combinations without risking droping points..

But what puzzels me the most is the fact that it is clear that this team is still experimenting but it gets results, picking cruicial points.

But truth be told I don't c Chibuku winning anything this season. I see Leal wearing a yellow shirt in every match for luck. Hola Sundoms you saw how Chibuku played tonite. There's ur chance to play against the Mighty Chiefs in the MTN finals.

Hahaha lol Pirates win again and haters say it was luck and boring. To tell the truth the only team that has impressed so far in the league is Bloem Celtic, the less said about Chiefs or Sundowns the better.

The galaxi of stars worry not bcause they know what they are doing. A lot of haters will continue hurting till end of the season.

Shapa Buccerneer shapa...
