Mamelodi Sundowns draw 0-0 with AmaZulu

Posted: 14 August 2011 Time: 17:01

Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by AmaZulu in their first match of the season at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It was a frustrating match for Sundowns as their star-studded midfield was not allowed to string passes together.

AmaZulu, on the other hand, were content with sitting at the back and managed to threaten Sundowns with a few quick breaks, but coach Manqoba Mngqithi will be pleased at how his young charges contained The Brazilians.

Sundowns took control of the match from the first whistle, but they were not allowed to create much clear-cut opportunities by the organised Usuthu defence.

The first chance fell for Mabhuti Khenyeza, who found himself with space on the left, but his shot went wide in the eighth minute.

Carlington Nyadombo received a yellow card for a clumsy double-footed tackle on Katlego Mphela just outside the box. Mphela stepped up, but his free-kick went straight into Tapuwa Kapini’s hands.

Sundowns continued to press forward, using their wingbacks to add more numbers, and it almost paid off in the 26th minute when Doctor Mampuru went on a dazzling run which was stopped illegally by Ramson Zhuwawo on the edge of the box.

Modise’s attempt from the free-kick was poor as his tame shot failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Usuthu almost took the lead against the run of play when Andile Khumalo fired in a long-range shot, but Sundowns goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands pulled off a one-handed save to tip the ball over for a corner.

The resulting corner almost produced a goal but Sandilands was alert enough to block Sibusiso Hadebe’s header; the ball bounced around the box a few times before Method Mwanjali cleared the danger.

AmaZulu almost scored when Namibian striker Tangeni Shipahu latched onto a brilliant long pass from Hadebe, but his shot struck the upright with Sandilands well-beaten.

Sundowns seemed to lose their tempo after the break, while Usuthu continued to grow in confidence. Dumisani Zwane should’ve opened the scoring in the 70th minute when he attacked the box from the right - he took a powerful shot that struck Sandilands in the face when a deft chip would’ve been the better option.

Mushekwi’s first chance came in the 76th minute but his looped header sailed past the top corner.

With AmaZulu keeping all players behind the ball, it was very difficult for Sundowns to feed Bafana Bafana star Katlego Mphela and Mushekwi, and in the end a goalless draw was a fair result.

This game was boring really watching the grass grow was better than that rubbish we were subjected to... And that Pirates reject called 'gogo earth' is a pathetic mediocre having seen the zebras huffing and puffing to an unconvincing referee assisted win I can safely say Pirates will easily defend the league

diehard brazillian

i like your spirit. moriri is too old and slow to kip with the pace of ace, he wont cope with the skill. nyatama is gud but still have to prove himself. im surprised u didnt mention sis thoko, have u accept that he has nothing to offer. krol has left us 4 gud.

that day at the fnb stadium, you will agree with me that yeyes luks had something to do with it. gattuso is a normal person, u cant expect him 2 be at his best wen he is marking someone who luks more of a gorilla.

gattuso is going to put nyatama in a bottle and silence his praisers once and for all. modise wont be marked, he is as gud as dead.

@ BUCS on Cruise Control

modise will get that robots fc players to be divided, he is too greedy. gogo earth and moloto will work together in getting rid of that clueless coach, neeniks. papi must come 2 join the champs.

i think robocop fc should just relocate to swaziland. they are very gud, in that kingdom. it will take them atleast 6 seasons to be on par with the galaxy. while they will be searching for formulars, the galaxy will be busy collecting 3ples and champs lig

its gud to be a bhakajuju, every fan just wishes to be you

It's amazing to see Pierats Fans puking a lot of bile here when it's us Downs Fans who supposed to be comnenting here, but am not worried they can shout louder here, but come weekend time we'll just shut their big mouths for good.No one will ever shout about the treble again. As for Amazulu they should be ashame of themselves for parking a Rea Via bus on the 18 yard area, just like Celtic did with the Gautrain they parked last weekend.Thanx God Pierats are playing an open kinda football. Now people will really see how good are our strikers. Our midfield&defence are tight.Yeah our strikers are gonna come to the party soon...mark my words !!!Where in the World have you ever heard of a Coach being judged just after two games except here in SA.Our fans needs to be well educated when it comes to football matters.I appeal to all the Downs Fans not to be influenced by what Pierats are saying about us.
