Benni McCarthy scores in Orlando Pirates' win against Black Leopards

Posted: 12 August 2011 Time: 21:49

Benni McCarthy scored eight minutes into his debut as Orlando Pirates beat Black Leopards 2-0 in Polokwane on Friday evening.

A goal in either half from two very different players sealed the fate of the newly-promoted team. Handing the Buccaneers the lead in the first half was rising star and South African national Under-23 striker Bongani Ndulula.

The second half goal was scored by a player in the twilight of his career and on his Pirates debut, McCarthy.

And while Pirates may have got off to the perfect start in the defence of their League title with maximum points in their opening match, the goal scored by McCarthy will be the biggest news coming out of this game.

Pirates certainly started the better of the two teams as they passed the ball around nicely, and duly got the opener after just 11 minutes.

Daine Klate whipped in a free-kick from the right flank and goalkeeper Azwindin Maphaha fluffed his punch into the path of Ndulula, who was quick to slot the ball into an empty net.

The rest of the half, however, saw Leopards the better side and they had three golden scoring chances.

In the 24th minute Edgar Manaka forced a great save from Moeneeb Josephs, who was at full stretch to his left to make a finger-tip save.

Four minutes later and a quick counter-attack started by Mongezi Bobe ended with Thabo Mongalo trying to chip the keeper from the edge of the box, but he saw his effort just skim the wrong side of the post.

Just before half-time Mongalo should really have found the back of the net. The striker found himself in a one-on-one situation with Josephs, but fired his shot straight at the keeper.

The second 45 minutes saw no side really take the ascendancy until Pirates found the back of the net in the 71st minute; again the goal coming because of a mistake made by Maphaha.

The Leopards keeper failed to collect the ball on the right edge of the box, which allowed Oupa Manyisa to steal it from him and play a cross into the box which found its way to McCarthy at the back post, and the seasoned striker made no mistake from only a couple of yards out.

After that the game petered out and Pirates ended the match victorious. Still, had it not have been for two silly mistakes by the keeper and some better finishing from their strikers, Leopards could have at least earned something from the match.

Well, let's dissect:

Josephs - was solid
Jele - solid, but did not overlap enough
Mjempu - not Pirates material, even Cloete is ten tymz beta dan him. Mjempu is too lethargic...
Lekgwathi - did ok & came in with a few good interceptions. Needs to make way 4 Mahamutsa though
Sangweni - Not commanding enough for my liking & da calmness he showed on his debut during da preseason was not there
Jali - seems to b losing his edge, his anticipation is poor hence he plays more da man dan the ball l8ly. He needs to pull up his socks
Manyisa - an Ace as usual! I lyk'd da fact dt he played a more offensive role 2dy & was more in the opposition's half dan in ours
Segolela - did well bt in patches
Klate - poor game, esp da 1st half. Shd hv made way 4 anada playa
Mayambela - is doing very @ writing his OP career & his football career in general as he is nw gonna miss out completely on being a fringe BB player
Ndulula - very poor decision making! @ 21yrs old he's no youngster. He must work hard & fast...
Benni - well need I say more? He is in da 18 area...
Mabena - uloyiwe ngoba naye vele uthola i-scheme ngomuthi...

Not da most exciting of performances bt surely da boys will improve...

If Leopards were a proper team Chibuku FC wud have been badly walloped. Chibuku played like the fake champions they are. Giving away possesion time and again. As for Bennie McDonald the guy is finished. I don' c him ever playing a full game. As 4 Leopards with that keeper of theirs they shud just start preparing 4 a quick return to Mvela.Rise Khosi rise !

Good points taken, some positives & negatives can be taken from this game.
For Ndulula to have scored showed with time he will be great.Benni coming on from the bench & immediately made his presence felt is a relief after so long a debate about his fitness, comeback & surely his goalscoring touch, yeah of course goalscorers are born & that's what Benni has!I think though he need someone who can work for him, someone who can understand him, someone akin, the ever cursed Mabena,I don't know but Mabena is good footballer but maybe not a good goalscorer but we need that striker who will run like Dwirt Yorke alongside Andy Cole,we need that striker who will work so hard for the evergreen Benni.that supporting striker who can play from deep.Mabhuti Khanyeza can do,and so is midfield come striker from Black Leopards Manyama.
The negatives,I'm so worried about Mayambela,he has not grow & it will take him forever long to learn.he plays street football without results.he is indeed forever wasteful.I don't hate the boy,he has some great touches but he is playing for himself & some ancient fans who are only interested in shibobos & nothing else. Mjempu less said than ever.why the coach plays him ahead of abo Twala leaves a lot to desire.
But all in all good start for a great season ahead.Thank you Mr McCarthy you are a darling.

Jali is way 2 good in that midfield and his calmness on the ball rubs off on to other players , for me the rise of Manyisa is solely as a result of playing alongside Andile and gaining confidence and self belief as a result . Im very happy with the performance in general.

Well it was'nt the same Bucs that terrorised the Zebraz in da Black Label Cup. . I think it had to do with the mind-set of the players than anything, I sense a bit of complasancy cripping in. . I really hope Benni will be fit sooner rather than later, he needs the full 90 to cause sm serious damage this season. I want Rooi back in dat back 4, as for Mjempu, I'm sure the Zebras can fit him in smwhere. . Up da Bucs!!!!!

I don't c it is an issue whether or not Benni cn play a full 90 minutes bcoz u dnt need 90 minutes 2 score a goal! He showed dt 2dy after almost a year of no competitive football!

Give him 5 more games & more tym wt da physical trainer & ppl r gonna c flames!

Tsipa! Ichuuu!...

Mr Leal get your act together before the supporters loose it .here are some of your flops today Mayambela was bad,Ndulula needs to stay upfront all the time,Tlou was the best attacking option but u substituted with the player that is scared to take on defenders nowadays,Mjempu is not giving us any attacking options ,Mahamutsa & Sangweni can make the best central defence partnership ,use Lekgwathi sparingly,You promised us offensive play but we see a defensive approach why,What is Tebogo Moloi doing,he is not helping.Pirates need to apply more pressure on the oposition or else all the previous season 's trophiess will go one by one .Management we need your input when we play Platinum Stars ,Sameeg Doutie shud be considered.Benni I was impressed keep it up.

I see one cow called Parker being under pressure because Bennie, perhaps it's worth mentioning that the all time BB top goal scorer, something which will lead to his downfall and failure...watch the space.
