Baroka FC stun Kaizer Chiefs in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 24 April 2011 Time: 17:18

Vodacom League side Baroka FC caused a major upset on Sunday beating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 to reach the Nedbank Cup semifinals.

Baroka’s win at the Peter Mokaba stadium will certainly go down as one of the biggest upsets in the history of South African football, after Thobani Mncwango scored at the death to record a famous win for the Ga-Mphahlele outfit.

Amakhosi started the better side but Baroka fought back with Mncwango forcing a save out of Itumeleng Khune in the 26th minute when after some great interchange of passes between him and Katlego Mashego, Mncwango shot powerfully from some distance and Khune tipped it over the bar.

However, Chiefs drew first blood when Knowledge Musona put Chiefs ahead in the 36th minute to break Baroka’s resistance. Skipper Jimmy Tau paced down the right and crossed for Musona, whose left footed clinical strike hit the roof of the net.

Baroka refused to throw in the towel and were back in it on the stroke of halftime, when veteran Sam Ndlovu headed in from a corner to equalise.

Chiefs could have put Baroka to the sword in the second half, but wasted some great opportunities in the second half.

Sthembiso Ngcobo, who had stepped in for Stanton Lewis on the stroke of halftime, shot over the bar in the 56th minute when it seemed easier to score than to miss.

Chiefs continued to fluff their opportunities and were made to pay for it at the death, when Mncwango scored from a rebound after a corner to stun the Soweto giants.

I feel sorry for DOWNS they gonna see anything when we play them, I know my team takes a loss as wake up call but anyway a loss is loss and disappoiting. Our plan should only be to beat DOWNS and AJAX. Sorry to Rats fans because I know most of them bet sportstake and they said Chiefs is gonna win now they have mixed feelings they don't know whether to celebrate or to be angry.

When the Baroka coach said " i am glad to have avoided Pirates at this stage and wished for Chiefs" this coach knew exactly how weak this team is. Even Jessica tactics did n't work.

Now their fans are calling their players average but we have been telling them the same thing, yet they were in denial. They now want their coach fired, but i did tell them, VV could have been fired a long time ago. He was kept because he beat THE GALAXI OF STARS twice, not noticing that, Kroll has been dominant over the Soweto derby, since 2008.

They are now insulting their own players, They are divided, They dont trust the chairman and his family run business anymore. Questions are been asked about credintials of the chairmans kids.

Chiefs is average and remain financially challenged, so change must n't be expected anytme soon.

There are implications to KC's loss, will KC lose concentration after losing to Baroka? or will they concentrate more on the league? or will they lose it completely and give up everything? One of the three is bound to happen.

For Pirates i would have loved them to win and concebtrate on both the league and the Nedbank cup so that going into their game against Sundowns they can either win or draw which then eliminates Sundowns out of the race. A win against Ajax will eliminate Ajax though not completely. A weak KC will make the race more difficult for PIRATES.

One thing is for sure Musona is slowly becoming selfish and not sharing the ball with his teamates. Tau made the difference everytime he went wide and should have done more of that.

Sello Chokoe wants PIRATES in the semi final but PIRATES has to play FFS first. Baroka FC will not beat PIRATES especially if they play the way they played against KC. PIRATES will not miss a lot of sitters like KC. Hard luck Khosi.
