Baroka FC stun Kaizer Chiefs in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 24 April 2011 Time: 17:18

Vodacom League side Baroka FC caused a major upset on Sunday beating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 to reach the Nedbank Cup semifinals.

Baroka’s win at the Peter Mokaba stadium will certainly go down as one of the biggest upsets in the history of South African football, after Thobani Mncwango scored at the death to record a famous win for the Ga-Mphahlele outfit.

Amakhosi started the better side but Baroka fought back with Mncwango forcing a save out of Itumeleng Khune in the 26th minute when after some great interchange of passes between him and Katlego Mashego, Mncwango shot powerfully from some distance and Khune tipped it over the bar.

However, Chiefs drew first blood when Knowledge Musona put Chiefs ahead in the 36th minute to break Baroka’s resistance. Skipper Jimmy Tau paced down the right and crossed for Musona, whose left footed clinical strike hit the roof of the net.

Baroka refused to throw in the towel and were back in it on the stroke of halftime, when veteran Sam Ndlovu headed in from a corner to equalise.

Chiefs could have put Baroka to the sword in the second half, but wasted some great opportunities in the second half.

Sthembiso Ngcobo, who had stepped in for Stanton Lewis on the stroke of halftime, shot over the bar in the 56th minute when it seemed easier to score than to miss.

Chiefs continued to fluff their opportunities and were made to pay for it at the death, when Mncwango scored from a rebound after a corner to stun the Soweto giants.

VV and Masango must just go and leave our, I don't really understand why VV undermines BAROKA FC like this. They played the entire 90min like a practice match VV should have started a strong team like he did against Wits and give the young boys a chance after we scored 3 goals. I'm now supporting the fans that says VV must go, we have a team that can get us results but always he is testing the combinations that failed long ago. Anyway congrats to Baroka and wish Rats all the best in this competition hope they win it.

Insults continue for tau and company.
Chiefs should realise that the Likes of masango and lebese will never improve. their game is now stuck where they are.
If these two Cant improve any further, don't expect a 28yr old ngcobo to improve his game either.
It's a shame that a big team like chiefs can't nurture young talent accordingly. so many young promising players have been let down.

Mathata, mahlomola, mehlolo. Chiefs is a disgrace and i honestly believe that they must go out there and buy players. What were they doing failing to tear baroka apart? Why play the same style with baroka and not use your experience to vary the game? It is clear VV does not have plan B in case plan A is not working. Congrats to Baroka and wish u the best
