Orlando Pirates beat United FC in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 2 April 2011 Time: 22:14

Orlando Pirates were not overly stretched as they strode through to a 3-1 win over United FC in a Nedbank Cup last 16 match at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Saturday night.

The Soweto giants were for the most part just too good for their first division opponents, though credit should be given to United for a fighting display which saw the likes of Thembile Kanono and keeper Nkosana Maseko standing out.

The first half was action-packed, with goal-mouth action a regular occurrence.

Unfortunately though for the NFD side, most of the goal-box incidents happened in their own penalty area as Pirates asserted their dominance from the opening whistle and were indeed on top for almost the entire stanza.

The visitors took the lead after 10 minutes when Lungisani Ndlela had the misfortune of heading the ball in to his own net following a corner kick.

The second goal was scored in the 28th minute as Oupa Manyisa hammered in an unstoppable 30-yarder after United keeper Nkosana Maseko had punched clear from a cross.

In fact, had the Buccaneers been more clinical in front of goal, they could have taken a four or five goal lead into the break.”

Malawian striker Chiukepo Msowoya missed two chances, as did Thulasizwe Mbuyane.

Tlou Segolela was also a big threat to the United defence and came close early on in the game when he forced Maseko to tip his rasping drive over the bar, and also nearly curled in a shot just before the break.

The home side’s only real chance came 10 minutes before the turn-around when one-time Bucs midfielder Kanono hammered in a low 20-yard drive in the 34th minute which kept Senzo Meyiwa honest.

Pirates had the first chance of the second half, but Shobela Leseba did well to get back and clear Mbuyane’s 50th minute effort off the line.

Keen to make an impression off the bench, former Kaizer Chiefs attacker Junior Khanye did exactly that when he changed the complexion of the game in the 58th minute by applying great technique to fire home a back post volley.

The goal took the sting out of the Sea Robbers and saw the home team playing with a renewed sense of confidence, and had Ndlela succeeded with a half chance in the 70th minute, it could have been a very different ball game.

This proved to be costly: five minutes later Dikgang Mabalane gave Bucs an important two goal cushion when he did well to bring down Segolela’s through ball before finishing coolly with a low angled drive.

Pirates could perhaps have added a fourth goal in the closing minutes, but Maseko made a couple of decent saves, while there were also a couple of wasted chances by the top flight outfit.

United (4-4-2): Maseko; Matuka, Sekete, Nxele, Kibe (Khanye 39’); Moeletsi, De Wee (Mafoka 59’); Rapulane, Kanono; Masotho, Ndlela

Pirates (4-4-2): Meyiwa, Johannes, Lekgwathi, Cloete, Mabalane, Jali, Manyisa, Segolela (Mayambela 81’); Mbuyane (Malokase 74’), Msowoya (Ndlula 85’)

A good warm-up for Pirates before lauching an onslaught on the league title. It was nice to see the Terminator back in action. The coach must keep on giving Msowoya a chance to play.

I agree with guys who says Krol is stupid. He squandered a good opportunity to test the fringe players. He could have rested players like Lekgwathi and other senior men for younger players but Krol will remain Krol what shall we do. Let's not chase him Buccaneers at these time of the season like Sundowns did we will destabilise our team rhythm. I also don't like Krol entirely but I choose to reserve my opinions about him for now..!

Graig Rosslee is not a solution, he is in the same boat with Krol when it comes to these strange decisions.

Mopheme am not sure if taking abt the same Krol that i know, bt ke u r entitle to ur uninformed opinion. Gud game last nyt although we could hav scored more goals. And that is not only pirates problem but the whole nation including Bafana. Putting more foreigners as our strikers wont do us any gud, we need the likes of Ndulula to be given a chance for the 2012 and 2014 vision going forward. Well done buccs. Swallows u r next.

Why do you think my opinions are uninformed, you are wrong. I know about Pirates and the SA football and the world football 10 times than you could ever think of. For your information I was even at that game. How many games you attended wena. It is you who are uninformed..!

Have you coached a team before or you just a fan or should i say a follower. Anyway you think the way you because of the level of knowldge that you have which you say its better than mine and I wont argue with that. Once a pirate always a pirate.

Your team and Chiefs are not comparable Chiefs is the biggest team in AFRICA in everything and Ratz has not done anything in Mzansi soccer to compare it to Chiefs (Free Soccer Lesson).

@Mriyo you are so spot on,we did nothing yesterday, minnow scared of Big Brother, win thats it!futher f a v o r i t i s m is rife at Pirates

1. I will forever complain about Kruel simply because of favouritism. Pirates has become like Animal Farm, all animals are equal but some are more equal than the others.

2. I agree that Msowoya needs game time and will regain confidence.

3. Food for thought, (a)what position exactly was Mbuyane playing yesterday?(b)How many chances did he miss?(c) Is his left foot handicapped.

4. Hristo ya!, wont mind Kruel resigning for an early Christmas Present

Mabhakaniya amahle you are all out of order.

Mayambela is an impact player and is effective that way, so we should keep him that way, he makes our bench look decent and scary. At Celtics Owen Dagama tried to start with him yet in never worked.

There was no way Kroll was gonna undermine a team because it plays in the NFD, That would have been suicide.

Kroll kept the core team to keep them fit for Swallows game,

Ndulula is a young player which we must introduce gradually into the game not rush him and then blame him later.

You are so negative to such an extent that you cannot even celebrate when we are doing well. Pirates demostrated supiriority over United FC who was playing at home.

Mriyo n Motlokoa stop your operation you destructing the focus of our team. I dont expect this from u 2 senior Bhakaniyas

Do you guys want to win or do you want Pirates to win in way that satisfy your demands.

instead of celebrating Mnike Manyisa ACE's goal and how stable Johanees was coming from injury and the come back of THE TERMINATOR, you are busy criticising unnecessary.

Lets share the possitives with our coach not condemn him, Kloete is out and Twala Mr Look around should walk into that role, its his natural position anyway.

Malokase is not pirates material but as long as he is at our ship, he will be supported and be regarded as one of our GALAXI's
