Kaizer Chiefs beat Nathi Lions in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 13 March 2011 Time: 17:46

Nathi Lions very nearly became the third First Division team to knock Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs out of the Nedbank Cup, but they succumbed 3-2 after extra-time at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Amakhosi gave a thoroughly unconvincing performance in which they wasted a two-goal lead and needed a fortuitous penalty early in extra-time to win, but they have at least booked a place in the Last 16.

The early stages of the first half were evenly balanced, with Chiefs looking the likelier scorers, though Amabhubesi showed enough in attack to suggest that the top flight team would not have things all their own way.

However, midway through the first half, Amakhosi broke the deadlock. Mandla Masango picked out a great diagonal ball for George Lebese that sprung Lions’ offside trap and the left-footer finished the chance with aplomb to rack up his first official goal for the club.

Seven minutes later Chiefs doubled their advantage, cutting open the hosts’ backline with a swift counter-attack that put Stanton Lewis clean through on goal – the striker finished beautifully to the left of Zikalala to put his team 2-0 up.

At the start of the second half it seemed as if Chiefs would be able to stroll through the rest of the game and easily book their place in the Last 16, but Makhoba halved the deficit in the 48th minute, ghosting in unmarked at the back post to head home from a Moses Chavula free kick.

The Soweto side didn’t respond particularly well to conceding the goal, as they looked lethargic and struggled to move the ball at pace, while Amabhubesi certainly worked hard to get men behind the ball and make life difficult for their illustrious visitors.

The introduction of Gerald Sibeko just past the hour mark seemed to inject some life into the Amakhosi, but they still struggled to create opportunities to extend their lead.

And they were duly punished with just under a quarter hour of regulation time remaining. Sibeko was guilty of miscontrolling the ball in his own box and Lindani Zungu pounced, scoring with a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-2 and send the game to an extra 30 minutes.

Six minutes into extra time, Lions central defender Siyabonga Shoyisa gave away a needless penalty after a barge into the back of Lewis.

Sibeko, at fault for the home team’s second goal, redeemed himself by converting the spot kick, though Zikalala got a hand to it and very nearly kept it out. The penalty, which took the score to 3-2, proved decisive.

You pie-lerete fans must shut that hell out of your mouth.
Was the penalty against sundowns supposed to be given? What I know you don't like the fact that KC is still there in this competition which is bad news for Marete-rete fans.
Stop talking about quality because you earned the name SIX MABONE through that average players from ZIM MARETENEER.
We took four points from the so called quality players.
MARETE-RETE your team is below average, if it wasn't because of Jerom Damon and his crew, your team would be somewhere outside the top9 bracket.
THE THREAT IS STILL THERE MARETE-RETE FANS.

you must be a worried man,I can read from what you are posting.your team is devided and I too I'm concerned. The truth is the Soweto Derby needs a strong Pirates and Chiefs.look up to this stage of the season this league was exciting because both teams were really up to it.
Though pound for pound your Chiefs is still far away compared to the mighty Buccaneers.yes you have few, very few individual players who can rise to the occasion but you lack depth.it should not be like that.we all know that you compelety dominated us last Nov/Dec but it was mainly due to our coach poor tactical acumen.
so watch out my man, lets pray for early meeting in this cup and you will see on how we will tear you apart.

Something wrong with Chiefs these days now is the time for Kaizer Snr to intervene there is no good relationship between the players and the coach. The problem lies with the coach, this guy thinks he is the in Chiefs,VV does not respect the players and he forgetts that this boys are adults and they do have families, wives, girlfriends and children. He shouts to the players as if he is shouting to his children and he does not have a figure fathers role in the team,Can someone tell me what Nale ate for VV this coach has showed the country that he hates Nale,he forgetts that he found Nale at Chiefs and he will leave him there.

I don't know whether Kaizer is happy about this kak perfomance and Kaizer do have this tendency of giving the coaches more to do what they want in a wrong way.Scara Ngobese was destroyed by Muhsin not him alone many players, but only one that never allowed to be destroyed by this foreign coach that is Mabhudi Khanyeza even in Mabhudi saga Kaizer never intervened also in this current one of Nale he is quite.
For how long will this coaches destroy our soccer,Kaizer must wake up before it is to late.
Lastly Gqubule and his assistants were shame most of their decisions were uncalled for, once more again the referees Board needs to take action against this behaviour of referees really it is killing our soccer.

All psl trophies:Khosi Please cool down all what we need to do is to be a true reality, let us not be controlled by our hearts.Khosi lami the body language of the players tells a story, with the same players we were very consistent but now with also the very same players we are just mild.
Mina I believe the problem is with the coach,he is disrespecting the players,he does not have that motoivating element insyead he destroys the psychollogically and spiritually he wants them to play according the book instructions forgetting that our Mzansi players do have their natural skills.Look how Josta is perfoming,Canm somebody tells me why VV was shouting to Lebese while the poor guy was not playing.

Please people get over yourselves! Yes Chiefs needed a penalty to win over Nathi Lions but it's not as if we were playing against 11 women suffering from acute dysmenorrhea. Chiefs has a history of struggling against lower tier teams, that's nothing to be proud of and we'd have happier Pirates, Sundowns fans if besidliwe. Sorry guys that it did not happen as you wished and however long you speak, the score will not change.

@ Pirates fans dreaming of making Chiefs their daily bread: you better start beating us at some point soon but as things stand- we've played you three times this season and you have failed to beat us. Tell me who is in danger of becoming someone's daily bread?
