Maritzburg dump Sundowns out of Telkom Knockout Cup

Posted: 7 November 2010 Time: 17:06

Mamelodi Sundowns were unceremoniously dumped out of the Telkom Knockout Cup by Maritzburg United on Sunday.

Maritzburg won the Telkom Knockout quarter-final 2-0, with a Rudolf Bester penalty on 15 minutes, and a Fabian McCarthy header on 59 minutes.

Sundowns passed the ball around in the first half, but despite their early domination they were unable to find any openings in the Maritzburg United defence.

And despite their lack of possession, it was United who took the lead in the 15th minute, when Vuyo Mere blatantly handled the ball inside the penalty area. The referee did not hesitate in pointing to the spot and showing Mere a yellow card, but he should have been shown a straight red.

Rudolf Bester stepped up for the Team of Choice and calmly slotted the ball home, sending the keeper the wrong way and handing his side the lead, 1-0.

Sundowns continued to control the game, but were unable to create any clear-cut chances, as their passing in the final third let them down.

Antonio Lopez-Habas made a dramatic substitution when he replaced Mere with Lebohang Mokoena in the 34th minute, but still the Brazilians were unable to open up the United defence.

It was United who finished the half the stronger as Bester again tested Brian Baloyi from long range in the 43rd minute, although the Sundowns keeper made a comfortable save.

Maritzburg looked more comfortable in the second half, and created some decent chances on goal themselves.

In the 59th minute they made their time on the ball count as McCarthy doubled their lead. Bevan Fransch chipped in an inviting free-kick from the right flank and the former Kaizer Chief’s defender rose highest to powerfully head his side’s second goal, 2-0.

Sundowns quickly introduced another offensive player in the form of Surprise Moriri, and he made an immediate impact almost pulling a goal back for his side in the 72nd minute.

After a slick passing movement, Moriri found himself with some space just inside the 18-yard area and let off a powerful shot, but Shu-Aib Walters was on hand to make a good save low and to his left.

Sundowns continued the pressure in the closing minutes of the match, but Maritzburg were able to hold onto their two goal lead and move into the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout Cup.

Mayinga is not Sundowns material, we arguably have the best left back in the country, yet the coach doesn't seem to notice. whats wrong with this Habas guy? when last have we won a game convincingly? i'm telling you, Sundowns has been poor since the departure of Stoichkov!

Lopez is good as an assistant coach especially when it comes to training. He must not be fired,he must be demoted to his speciality job & a good coach be hired for the head coaching job.Maritzburg deserved it much than us yesterday...well done to them & good luck in the semis.

I have noticed one major thing about Sundowns. There is no pressure on the players hence even in Bafana set up they tend to relax too much and contribute less. They only win matches that are there for the taking and would never sweat and win a game they were supposed to lose and the opposite is true when comparing to Chiefs. With Chiefs, you have a million supporters watching every touch you make ,sponsore are watching and we are not talking about one major company here but a lot.

When Chiefs lose ,even the players have got nowhere to go after the match to hang out because it's Chiefs all over the country ,no place to hide.Sundowns on the other hand even when they lose the players can just drive thei big machines and come socialise in JHB no one cares here.

I'm sorry to say ths:Sundowns players are not serious.
They cannot beat Maritzburg, then what about the likes of Pirates/Chiefs.How are we going to beat them then.

I've lost hope, but I'll continue support the Brand.

They cannot beat Maritzburg, with all due respect ko Maritzburg, but Maritzburg United.Come on

You must just watch those Palookas at Sundowns, they even smile after loosing a game, its like they just go there for the sake of it, no passion whatsoever!

Those haters that are celebrating Sundowns loss should know that at least we Sundowns supporters accept defeat. We dont break the chairs and throw vuvuzelas and Cabbages after the game. Even though its painfull to loose that way but we have to accept it. The question is where do we go from here

Vuyo Vuyo Vuyo. Why dont you be serious with your career for once. For all these years you have been a liability for the team than someone who really contribute positively. Some of us don't forget easily that it was your fault that Gordon Ingesund got fired after those consistently deliberate back passes that saw sundowns loosing matches on the row. Last year you caused us 3 points against swallows and we could have won the league. Your days aren numbered my brother and I am afraid if you leave sundowns you will just be lingering around. I hope you start taking your career seriously.

You are the first person after me to critisize Pattison, thank you for that, but then tell tell the Wonders of this forum about how useless lenkawu is, they will tell how much they know soccer. Pattison is just enjoying affirmitive action at down. Stupid Motsepe even created an award specially for leli swefe - The Most Committed Player, I mean really, all contracted players are committed and he was given a 100k cheque, thank you very much.

Le uncle u Motsepe, with all due respect, i dom... 2 cup competitions have just gone by and Downs have been kicked out on both and yet Sundowns are the only team that has monthly awards for players, where they are given 25k cheques for doing what, fokol... I f.u.c.k.i.n' quite this joke team.
