Orlando Pirates thump SuperSport United

Posted: 6 November 2010 Time: 22:18

Orlando Pirates maintained their unbeaten record in Cup competitions by beating hosts SuperSport United 3-0 in a Telkom Knockout Cup quarter-final match played at the Loftus Stadium on Saturday evening.

Lucky Lekgwathi put the Sea Robbers in the lead in the first half with Rooi Mahamutsa and Chiukepo Msowoya putting their team further ahead with second half goals.

Usually, SuperSport is renowned for stinging teams with their abilities at set-pieces. But they were given some of their own medicine when Lekgwathi and Mahamuta struck during corner kicks.

In the build-up to this match, much was made of Pirates Daine Klate’s first run against his former paymasters.

As fate would have, Klate was thrust into the spotlight as early as the sixth minute when he was required to take the penalty awarded to the team from Soweto, when Pirates’ 19-year-old right wingback, Keeno Shellar, was adjudged to have handled Klate’s attempted strike on goal.

But the Pirates left sided midfielder was unable to fire the spot kick beyond Wayne Brown in the United goals, the keeper used his feet to repel Klate’s penalty attempt.

However, Klate didn’t have to wait too long before he could redeem himself. In the ninth minute captain Lekgwathi rose majestically to head home Klate’s well taken corner kick.

The game flowed from end to end as both teams looked to attack at every opportunity. The Tshwane side’s first serious attempt came when striker Lemessa Fikru headed Morgan Gould’s long throw just over the Pirates crossbar.

The home-side came close to levelling matters just after the half-hour mark when Jabu Maluleke let rip with a firm volley at the Pirates goals, in trying to avert the danger, defender Rooi Mahamutsa deflected Maluleke’s attempt onto the Pirates crossbar.

Pirates’ keeper Moeneeb Josephs was at full stretch just before the interval when he was required to palm away Dipsy Selolwane’s low drive, two minutes before the break.

Gavin Hunt’s side fell further behind when an unmarked Mahamutsa scored with a free header from Dikang Mablane’s corner in the 58th minute.

Msowoya applied the killer blow when he started and finished a move to give Pirates a commanding three goal lead. After receiving a defensive punt, the striker combined with Klate before finishing with aplomb in the 64th minute.

By that time SuperSport were a well beaten lot and were not able to pose any further threats on the Pirates goals in the remaining minutes.

Gavin Hunt's side rarely threatened the well-marshalled Pirates defence.

United can claim to have been unlucky against both Downs and Amakhosi, but they were outplayed by a ruthless no-nonsense Bucs side that showed more hunger and determination to get in to the last four.
