Nyasha Mushekwi the hero as Sundowns beat Platinum Stars

Posted: 23 October 2010 Time: 20:01

Nyasha Mushekwi was the hero as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Platinum Stars 1-0 in a Telkom Knockout round of 16 match at the Moruleng Stadium on Saturday night.

The Zimbabwean netted the winner 10 minutes from time, beating three defenders before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane.

The first chance of the game came in the fourth minute and surprisingly it went the way of the home side.

A long ball from the back saw Brian Baloyi make an uncharacteristic mistake, allowing the ball to bounce off his knees and into the path of Thuso Phala. The Stars striker though, squandered the chance as he chipped the ball over the keeper and the crossbar from the edge of the area.

That was about as good as it got for the home side as the Brazilians dictated terms using the flanks to attack and create problems.

On eight minutes Mabhuti Khenyeza found some space inside the area and fired a low shot goalwards, but Mpontshane made a good finger tip save diving down to his right.

Then in the 21st minute some poor officiating by the linesmen robbed Sundowns of the opening goal. Matty Pattison whipped in a free-kick that found the head of Mushekwi, but his ‘goal’ was wrongly adjudged to have been offside.

The second half saw the same tale as the first half unfold as Sundowns laid siege on the Stars goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Katlego Mphela should have scored in the 70th minute when Elias Pelembe put him in some space with a fine ball into the 18-yard area, but the striker skied his shot from about ten yards out.

Finally, in the 80th minute all Sundowns hard work paid off when Mushekwi handed them the lead they so thoroughly deserved.

That is the way the game ended as Sundowns deserved their win and a place in the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout competition.

that goal should be the goal of the week. i jus want pirates in the next round-that win against us last week was a rare one.
Nice to see that the coach made some changes to the starting line up. moriri will soon warm the bench if he doesn't pull up his socks-there is no time for non performing players cause this is not bafana! i'd love to see shongwe one day playing alongside pattison however that time will come one day.
That booth should sit on the bench and in comes mngomeni, slowly but surely right changes are being made.

After eating plate ya nama last night, who's next on our menu? Suprise and Pelembe need to pull their socks up. I see us meeting this other team and will surely factorize them. In the meantime, pls shake them Mushekwi.

Hehehehe, the coach is only Playing Moriri to keep his Nationa squad position...i think its instruction from higher above because Motsepe cannot afford not to have a National squad player form sundowns...
Am i talking crap? Is Moriri btter than the players sitting on the bench for him?

What a dis-jointed team... Lopez needs to resign and take Pattison with him. This boy only manages to play when he is eating of Nyandoro's left overs and yet everyone is crazy about him. It must be because his a boer and darkies just love whities (slave mantality). Only if Star managed to score one before us, you would have seen how we would huffed and puffed.

Bottom line, we couldn't match Pirates, we cannot match Chiefs.

I m beggining to DOUBT Habas' knowledge of the beautiful game.If you want to get the best out of Khenyeza , play him alongside Mphela. Should have started the game with Khenyeza/Mphela....NOT Moriri. Baloyi, Nyandoro,Moriri and Booth should be retired. The Brazilian should be roped in.Otherwise i was impressed with Khumalo and Nyasha.

The goalkeppers are also a big concern. Motsepe must flush his cheque book infront of Khune......the boy will vanish from Naturena. Not the best of displays really...except for the last 15 minutes.

its no lucky escape on u guys but won by de same margin, may be de language is also becoming difficulty for our journos,

Pirates fans Lucky scored the goal, hence the word lucky is been used for the headlines, if it was Mabalane it could have been "erminator terminate the Arrow" something between those lines

I am appealing to the downs family not to interfer with the coach no matter what, the useless Moloto will fire him if there is a need.

im running out of ink.
