Lucky Lekgwathi goal sends Orlando Pirates through

Posted: 23 October 2010 Time: 17:31

Lucky Lekgwathi scored the only goal of the game as Orlando Pirates beat Golden Arrows in the first round of the Telkom Knockout Cup in Chatsworth on Saturday afternoon.

Pirates were the dominant force throughout the game and created a host of chances before the skipper finally buried one shortly after the restart.

Daine Klate squandered an early chance when he kicked the turf instead of properly connecting with Dikgang Mabalane’s lay-up from the right.

At the other end, Moeneeb Josephs came off his line in the 10th minute to spectacularly turn behind for a corner from which Bucs launched a counterattack and almost scored, but Chiukepo Msowoya just failed to get to Mabalane’s cross.

Arrows were again all at sea four minutes later as a free-kick was sent in from the halfway line. Da Rocha came out and missed the ball ,which fell onto the head of Rooi Mahamutsa. The keeper’s blushes were saved as Mahmutsa’s effort crashed into his left hand post and went out for a goal-kick.

It was a non-stop onslaught on the Arrows goal in the 34th minute. It was Mabalane once more who was causing all the trouble; this time he got down the right wing and whipped in the ball which found Msowoya, but his powerful header went over the goal.

A minute later Siyabonga Sangweni sent a close-range header well wide and Pirates moved up field again. Andile Jali managed to find Mabalane on the right of the Arrows 18-yard area. As the ball came to him Mabalane, from a tight angle, went for goal, but his effort went into the side netting.

Whatever Ruud Krol had told his team at half-time seemed to work as they took the lead a minute into the second half.

Klate sent a perfectly weighted ball from the right. Lekgwathi tracked the ball and got on to the end of it, heading it downwards and wide of Da Rocha from close range.

The visitors went in search of a quick second and it took a combination of Russell Mlotshwa and Da Rocha to knock Happy Jele’s attempted cross off the line in the 50th minute for a corner.

While Arrows might have failed to ignite, Sangweni did give a display of fine defending when he slid in from behind and got the ball off the feet of Ndumiso Mabena just as he prepared to fire at goal from close range.

Pirates again counter-attacked in 92nd minute through Mabalane, who played a quick one two with Jali before being played in on goal, but Da Rocha stood firm and blocked the shot.

We must not use our energy to wish what Kroll should do because he is clueless. What is the style of Pirates these past seasons?

Have you ever seen Pirates play different tactics for different games?
Is there any plan B or C (I thing I am asking for more on this one)
Have you ever seen players being fielded on the field of play not because the coach likes them but because they suit the plan to unsettle opposition?
Why is Kroll making substitutions if his aim is not to add value?
Why is Pirates winning by 1 goal every game? If the opposition scores we draw or lose those games because of the dogmatic approach of Kroll.
Why are Pirates strikers not scoring?
Why are these strikers (for the past two and the half seasons) having few or no shot at goals?
Why do Pirates always put themselves under pressure by defending an odd goal?
Why is Kroll always saying the same comments after each and every game, why interview this piece of sh!^T any way?

There are lots of questions that arise from the stupidity of Kroll.

Magebhula, notice that the current system (if it is) of play means that development players will never get a chance to play for the senior team. You introduce them gradually but how do you introduce the when Pirates is winning by 1 goal and as usual under pressure and defending?

This system also means that players who have not played for a while or those coming from injuries would not play because of the immense pressure that it puts on players on the field. In the future we will end up blaming these players for the losses the team incurred and Kroll will be happy that we will believe in his and only favorite starting eleven and substitutes.

Buccaneers, I need your honest opinions on this one: Don't you think we need to acquire the services of a strikers coach? We are failing dismally in this department otherwise the team is a well oiled machine.

you guys smoke, and what ever it is it's not good for your brains, why dont you just support the team? if not jump ship to kaiser cabbages, for according to you they play good football, and you judge this about the results they got from amazulu, amazulu played like the NFD material, they failed the basic of defence, we played cabbages twice this season on a competitive match, we bit them second game techtically, that was not luck, it was a proper plan of a good technical team headed by Krol, we went on to hummer sunflower, and on the 13, we are going to hummer your good team chimps again,

10 reasons why Krol must stay

1. Won us a trophy in 10 years
2. Brings synergy in the team
3. Knows exactly who to play at what time and which game
4. Gives everyone a fair chance remember Gumbi/Mdluli
5. Runners up TKO 2008/9 and league
6. Concedes less goals 2008/9 and 2009/10
7. Spotted Jali, Mongala and Johannes
8. He refused to coach Chiefs and chose Pirates
9. Played the game at its highest levels
10. There is no one to replace him...

The coach is always with the players 24-7 he knows who can do what and when... just let the coach do his job... the problem with some OP fans they think they own Pirates and they think they know better than the coach... sies man... just comment on something else and leave the coach alone... niyanyanyisa...

10 reasons why Krol must stay - Go

1. Won us a trophy in 10 years – He contributed 2 years in those 10 years. (VV won a cup in his 1st season therefore we do not call that attivement)
2. Brings synergy in the team – What synergy? Players such as Makhanya, Gert, Mongalo etc are not happy which act against your illusionary synergy.
3. Knows exactly who to play at what time and which game – name few examples because what I see is same everything every game.
4. Gives everyone a fair chance remember Gumbi/Mdluli – Makhanya, Mxoyana, Morton?
5. Runners up TKO 2008/9 and league – History remember the winners.
6. Concedes less goals 2008/9 and 2009/10. Big teams score more goals and every year their players are the leading goal scorers if not runners up. May I also remind you that OP has scored almost the same number of goals than the relegated teams, this could mean disaster in the near future. Chiefs and Sundowns fans can also attest to this trend. remember when they lost on the top 8 spots? It was because of the dogmatic approach of wanting to concede less thus leading to playing draws.
7. Spotted Jali, Mongala and Johannes – Remember when he said he does not know who Mongala is and it took a while to sign him. By this argument you absolve Mbele because he is the one who runs up and down negotiating contract with these players.
8. He refused to coach Chiefs and chose Pirates – What are you trying to say?
9. Played the game at its highest levels – But he is a mediocre as a coach. Remember Egyptian giants, Zamalek? They were never the same after Kroll even their chairman was shocked that OP hired him and warned us. Some of the warnings are there for everyone to see.
10. There is no one to replace him – you must be kidding, you watch a lot of cartoon network where Kroll is Alfa and Omega of your tiny world, get real.

On the issue of whether or not Pirates fans own the team, only a 1st degree dim-witted fool would think that they don’t. Fans make the brand, the brand make money through sponsorships, gate takings etc. If you thing that fans are irritating you blog off , siyingayinga ndini!

Our Coach is clueless period. This is another version of Bibey Mutombo(Mr Tactical Disciplne). Thanks to him we lost Leremi (May his soul RIP).

1.How do you explain the loan out of Morton ahead of Manyisa and Mabena.
2.Is there a rule that says Klaite must always be substituted and still you afford to leave Mbuyane.
3.Is there a rule that says you cannot play Msowoya and Otorogu together
4.How do you pick Mabena ahead of Mayambela, the boy misses critical opportunities and makes scoring so difficult, maybe it
explains why we dont score many goals, we have too many Mabenas in Pirates
5.Explain how Mbuyane misses the opportunity against Aces, explain why Mabalane misses opportunity against Arrows,
these are one-on-one with the keeper. Can anyone teach such seasoned campaigners how to be composed in the 18 area. Otorogu
showed them how but they dont learn, he was awarded a penalty through composure and allowing the defence to make mistakes. He has presence
unlike Mabena who couldn't at least force a penalty but made a hero of a defender with a soft tackle.

We are suffering the consequences of a coach who doesn't embrace the strength of our team over the years, a coach who will defend a 1 goal lead for 45 minutes.

Explain how possible is it to clip Downs wings and narrow the gap on the league and lose to a bottom of the log team at home nogal. As Mbuyane and the coach then pretend everything is alright, from a supporters perspective that can't be right. These are teams you sould be banging as many as possible goals..

On a positive side, I think our defence for the very first time in years was tight this weekend. Thanks to the positional changes. We were never vulnerable even on set pieces unlike in the past. The previous statistics are flawed, they dont take into consideration the result.Fact is the team that does not concede or cocedes goals but still win matches wins the league or competitions. Not the one that concedes few soft goals that result in draws or losses. Watch this space, once Cloete is back its back to square one, that's our coach.

From the middlefield to upfront, there are only two outstanding players who currently play for the team and not themselves, Klaite(Taught well at Supersport, soccer a team sport) and Jali, others they forever take wrong decisions because they want to claim glory, Mabalane and Mbuyane are immediate culprits, unfortunate for such veterans. As for Sox(Legs of thunder)he will come right, his attitude is right.

Historically ,Pirates goals come from the midfielders not strikers, but our strikers did all the damage, you can name a few, Djento Kampala, Etien Nsunda, Metroblitz, Cheeseboy, etc, but were a menace to the defenders and who were scoring then, the Mike Mhlangas, the Makhanyas, Leremi, Vilakazi, the list is endless. We have that in Otorogu and Msowoya but unfortunately

Finally, the way we play crrently its not sustainable, watching Chiefs/Amazulu on Saturday, was a bit jealous because Pirates
can play much more better than that given our resources as long as we can get rid of this stupid coach who would rather play his favourite eleven left footed players just to have all of them on the field. Yes he won MTN8 but still feel he must GO....
