Lucky Lekgwathi goal sends Orlando Pirates through

Posted: 23 October 2010 Time: 17:31

Lucky Lekgwathi scored the only goal of the game as Orlando Pirates beat Golden Arrows in the first round of the Telkom Knockout Cup in Chatsworth on Saturday afternoon.

Pirates were the dominant force throughout the game and created a host of chances before the skipper finally buried one shortly after the restart.

Daine Klate squandered an early chance when he kicked the turf instead of properly connecting with Dikgang Mabalane’s lay-up from the right.

At the other end, Moeneeb Josephs came off his line in the 10th minute to spectacularly turn behind for a corner from which Bucs launched a counterattack and almost scored, but Chiukepo Msowoya just failed to get to Mabalane’s cross.

Arrows were again all at sea four minutes later as a free-kick was sent in from the halfway line. Da Rocha came out and missed the ball ,which fell onto the head of Rooi Mahamutsa. The keeper’s blushes were saved as Mahmutsa’s effort crashed into his left hand post and went out for a goal-kick.

It was a non-stop onslaught on the Arrows goal in the 34th minute. It was Mabalane once more who was causing all the trouble; this time he got down the right wing and whipped in the ball which found Msowoya, but his powerful header went over the goal.

A minute later Siyabonga Sangweni sent a close-range header well wide and Pirates moved up field again. Andile Jali managed to find Mabalane on the right of the Arrows 18-yard area. As the ball came to him Mabalane, from a tight angle, went for goal, but his effort went into the side netting.

Whatever Ruud Krol had told his team at half-time seemed to work as they took the lead a minute into the second half.

Klate sent a perfectly weighted ball from the right. Lekgwathi tracked the ball and got on to the end of it, heading it downwards and wide of Da Rocha from close range.

The visitors went in search of a quick second and it took a combination of Russell Mlotshwa and Da Rocha to knock Happy Jele’s attempted cross off the line in the 50th minute for a corner.

While Arrows might have failed to ignite, Sangweni did give a display of fine defending when he slid in from behind and got the ball off the feet of Ndumiso Mabena just as he prepared to fire at goal from close range.

Pirates again counter-attacked in 92nd minute through Mabalane, who played a quick one two with Jali before being played in on goal, but Da Rocha stood firm and blocked the shot.

I have a problem with the head line. Other team have good head lines but when it comes to the most disliked team it's 'lucky escape for Pirates'...this is ridiculous...how we escape when you again say we were dominant? This is contradiction.

Ai abomakhalanjalo! Now you want to fhoose topix for kickoff. The same kickoff you were rejoicing that it was burned from your media briefing. Leave the editor alone he's got qualifications for his job. Either way there's nothing good to write about your team just ask Mickey he's even considering lending the gun from Mhlongo to threaten some of the journalist to write about the not so good lucky bux.

NB: I saw Honswaggel is back. That's good for the midget jali.

Thanks Mr editor for exposing Orlando Pistol fans inferiority complex and the lack of mental acumanship.

I certainly did not expect such insulting comments from you. Or are you revealing your true colours?

Well done to the boys although I must say that we did not play the best game. Arrows were all over us in the second half. Pitty the article fails to mention this.
Pirates is not 1 skipper team or Gayser Chiefs aka Family Business FC

What are you reffering to Mr. Editor if you are saying lucky escape? Mr. Krol what is Mbuyane and Mabalane doing for 90 minutes in the ground. Which game are you watching Krol? What was Mabena doing in the ground. Krol your favouritism is getting worse by the day. Where is Teko, where is Schalkwyk and Mayambela?

I see cabbage fans feel ready to play us again, they forget easily, a win against Platinum and Amazulu makes them feel stronger than us, I did not see the platinum game, but Amazulu commited so silly high school mistakes, wont say they were a good team to against, I would like them(kaizer cabbage/vuvuzela) to play SSU first!

can I challenge you to give yourself time to go and watch the team train, then you will see if all your favourite players attend training, for players are not selected from chisa nyama, but from training, and watch their partern, if they come on time or not, you cant select a player who is always 15min late for you aill be condoning late coming!

OPFC continues where it left of with the MTN8...that is dissappointing some people. The disgruntled group is throwing all sorts of names and tags to our club when it wins. I want to place this on record that i am proud of my club's victories because they win without controversies, inter alia, bribing officials to fix matches and later claiming to be cup kings (illegal cup kings)....mpssssssssss.

Mabalane is a good player but lacks the basics and unfortunately he is old to learn this basics now. He does not know when to shoot or just chip the ball. He made many wrong decisions in that game and that could have costed us the game. Tlou also has the same problems but atleast he can still learn. I believe the best player for that position is Mbuyane. The role Mbuyane is playing should be played by teko or Gert. These are the best players behide the striker.
