Lucky Lekgwathi goal sends Orlando Pirates through

Posted: 23 October 2010 Time: 17:31

Lucky Lekgwathi scored the only goal of the game as Orlando Pirates beat Golden Arrows in the first round of the Telkom Knockout Cup in Chatsworth on Saturday afternoon.

Pirates were the dominant force throughout the game and created a host of chances before the skipper finally buried one shortly after the restart.

Daine Klate squandered an early chance when he kicked the turf instead of properly connecting with Dikgang Mabalane’s lay-up from the right.

At the other end, Moeneeb Josephs came off his line in the 10th minute to spectacularly turn behind for a corner from which Bucs launched a counterattack and almost scored, but Chiukepo Msowoya just failed to get to Mabalane’s cross.

Arrows were again all at sea four minutes later as a free-kick was sent in from the halfway line. Da Rocha came out and missed the ball ,which fell onto the head of Rooi Mahamutsa. The keeper’s blushes were saved as Mahmutsa’s effort crashed into his left hand post and went out for a goal-kick.

It was a non-stop onslaught on the Arrows goal in the 34th minute. It was Mabalane once more who was causing all the trouble; this time he got down the right wing and whipped in the ball which found Msowoya, but his powerful header went over the goal.

A minute later Siyabonga Sangweni sent a close-range header well wide and Pirates moved up field again. Andile Jali managed to find Mabalane on the right of the Arrows 18-yard area. As the ball came to him Mabalane, from a tight angle, went for goal, but his effort went into the side netting.

Whatever Ruud Krol had told his team at half-time seemed to work as they took the lead a minute into the second half.

Klate sent a perfectly weighted ball from the right. Lekgwathi tracked the ball and got on to the end of it, heading it downwards and wide of Da Rocha from close range.

The visitors went in search of a quick second and it took a combination of Russell Mlotshwa and Da Rocha to knock Happy Jele’s attempted cross off the line in the 50th minute for a corner.

While Arrows might have failed to ignite, Sangweni did give a display of fine defending when he slid in from behind and got the ball off the feet of Ndumiso Mabena just as he prepared to fire at goal from close range.

Pirates again counter-attacked in 92nd minute through Mabalane, who played a quick one two with Jali before being played in on goal, but Da Rocha stood firm and blocked the shot.

With all the material at our disposal, wish for a better coach. Krol tactically bankrupt, getting the best out of his players, the less said the better.

I'm not so sure about the "lucky" escape because we clearly dominated the game. We had huge share of possession, created more chances than Arrows. I must say that I'm impressed by the Donna Ngobeni, the buoy's quiet doing his job and allowing the likes of Jali to surge on and go forward. Chansa didn't play and I'm impressed by the depth that we have at Bucs. Shapa Bucuneer Shapa !!!!!

Not the most attractive football dished out by both teams but I must say Pirates deserve to walk away as winners. They did what was required at the end of the day and that was winning and does not not matter how you win at times.I was impressed by the following players Klate for being able to track back and assist in defence Clifford Ngobeni for doing an excellent donkey work in the middle of the park and lastly for Johannes, Rooi for not putting the foot wrong. As Bucs we soldier on.
