Bafana lose to Leone Stars

Posted: 14 June 2008 Time: 20:46

Two late goalline saves by Sierra Leone’s goalkeeper; Christian Caulker secured a dramatic 1-0 win over South Africa, severely denting Bafana Bafana’s chances of qualifying for the 2010 African Nations Cup finals.

An 18th minute penalty by Sierra Leone’s captain and star player Mohammed Kallon separated the teams, but it was rough justice on Joel Santana’s men who were unlucky not have gained a point from their trip to Freetown.

They had completely dominated the opening period when the hosts mounted their first meaningful attack, and Bryce Moon’s lunge brought down Samuel Barlay in the penalty area, just inside the left channel. It was a careless challenge, and it has cost South Africa dearly.

Although the qualifying campaign for Angola 2010 has a long way to go, there must be serious concern around Bafana’s inability to pick up points in West Africa. And, unless this is rectified, South Africa face the embarrassing prospect of missing out on the Nations Cup finals just a few months before hosting the World Cup.

Yet, with a little luck, and more assured finishing, South Africa would have taken a point, or even all three, from this match.

Just as they completely dominated the opening quarter-hour, forcing the hosts into conceding a flurry of free-kicks, so they dominated the closing stages, again winning a number of free-kicks, but to no avail.

Caulker saved acrobatically on his line from from Lerato Chabangu in the 81st minute, just seconds after the Sundowns man had come on for a disappointing Terror Fanteni. And Caulker repeated the heroics during a goallmouth scramble three minutes into time added on, clinching a precious win for the underdogs.

South Africa came close on a number of other occasions, Kagiso Dikgacoi hitting the crossbar after a good move in the 67th minute involving Steven Pienaar and Tshepo Masilela.

Surprise Moriri twice drew point-blank saves out of Caulker, the first just before half-time, then again as Bafana mounted their second half comeback. And Pienaar twice had efforts that were too close to the keeper to trouble him.

The hosts were not completely outclassed however, and dominated the period after taking the lead – another cause for concern for Santana, as Bafana again let their heads drop.

They roused themselves well after the interval however, and even though Sierra Leone played with the confidence of a home side leading, Bafana return home convinced that the better side lost.

Sierra Leone: Christian Caulker – Warren Kanu, Ibrahim Koroma, Umeru Bangura, Gibrila Wobay – Samuel Barlay (Alpha Lansana 84), Ibrahim Kargbo, Sherrif Suma, Kai Kamara (Ishmael Kamara 90 + 3) – Mohammed Kallon (capt), Mustapha Bangura (Paul Kpaka 74)

South Africa: Khune – Moon (Mashego 68), Khumalo, Tsotetsi, Masilela – Modise, Sibaya (capt), Dikgacoi, Pienaar – Moriri – Fanteni (Chabangu 81)

I think it's time for Africans to rally together and petition FIFA to take the world cup away from SA to save our pride and dignity. We don't want to be remembr as the first continent to produce hosts tht got eliminated in the group stages. If you are with me go to www.fifa.com to put your signature on the petition,50 000 needed for the World Cup to be taken away!!!!!!

Ricardo I have never heard such trash. It is clear you are a fool raised with the old Apartheid mentality. Most BB fan do not agee with our Administrators BUT to start labelling the bad administratos as "Black" is a disgrace to you up-bringing.I should wash your mouth with soap.On your points, Surman has refused to play for South Africa when asked by Parreira and instead now plays for England U21, that chapter is CLOSED. Matt Patterson plays in the 3rd division in England, and hasnt made an impression on Newcastle fan - he is not ready for this level - Matter CLOSED. Agree with you with Ferriera, as I was the one who brought it to Kickoff's attention. Cale just doesnt dominated games and that is why he is not in Bafana.

Masilo,

you are a big disgrace to South Africa. You have the guts to try and justify the xenophobic attacks...you must be the biggest fool in town. You should be worried about how to put SA football back on track and not try to justify the babaric acts of fellow citizens.

South African football is sick and you need to admit it that if SA was not hosting the next world cup, there will be no chance in hell for SA to qualify.

I know it's painful to be beaten by lowly sierra leone but please never again should you try and justify xenophobia. It's sick and you make me sicker with your comments. Please go and wash your mouth and remove all the crap in the corners of your mouth.

i dont see what xenophobia has to do with Bafana's loss. You people like talking about politics and the actions done by just a bunch of South Africans. For your information, more than 90% of our total population is against xenophobia. If you want to comment about politics, go to the government websides and others you can think of. This is a Soccer comment section. So only use it for that perpose. If you dont have anything to say about soccer, just save your time and ours. To Bafana, please do better next time. You could have won yesterday if luck was on your side. Ni nga phel'umoya. We are right behind you. SAFA please put in Lucas and Masinga in the technical team to guide and Coach our Defenders and fowards. We need them.

I still can't believe our playas are still dropping heads under pressure like we're Botswana, lesotho or them...it's really pissing off! I'm a die-hard fan but i hate these excuses of losing with our heads down and only pounce on concentration time...clock is ticking for this irresponsible technical team who always have something to hide for their incapabilities

We're talking SA football here pls guys...we know most africans have always been pretending to us and talking crap behind our backs, but pls let's not make it go into the soccer field, because I mean everybody knows there's "nothing" we can't do! We might be some pretty faces but let's face it U can't beat us in a game of violence...that's a proven fact! So let's get back to the game!

Though,I'm a South African, I heard some bit of sense from Majalweng, n Ricardo was just racial and Masilo just out of his sense.come on, guyz critics must alwayz be there, how can we just prevent BB though they were disappointing.Some1 was right to say, on paper we are champs. BB are so crazy, they take 4 steps forward, n 5 more backwards. After their win against E Guinea, I nearly gambled with my baby girl in the sense that they will heavily beat the leon stars, because on paper the leons are far behind BB. I dont even know if Moriri was drugged or something, if that was Downs game, he should have scored all those goals he missed miraculously, the new coach must try to encourage players to be confident when on the field of play, I rest my points.

A lot of people are talking about the incompitence of Mbazo Mokoena. Look at how we struggled to command in our defence without him. We were scrappy and Leone could have scored a second goal.To his credit, he is not playing the same position at club level. but he is doing well above average. He is not a captain for nothing. How about him paring with Fabian in the the central defence? Fabian can be slow but he is the most timing defender we have ever had, and he has experience. something we are lacking in our defence. VIVA Mbazo and Fabian!!!

Apologies to Masilo: Bra, i completely missed your point there. Having rechecked. Im with you 100% i mean if this guys give such comments in front of South Africans, not so many will let them go.THey must be constructive in their critics rather than monking us. Nobody would like to be friendly to a person monking him. Thier critics are distroying more than anything else and we are better off with out those critics. We need building critics, and the rest of the issues, we will solve them ourselves as South Africans. Thanks.

Together Masilo
