Mamelodi Sundowns beat SuperSport United

Posted: 18 September 2010 Time: 22:24

Antonio Lopez Habas will be a happy man after his substitutions turned the Tshwane Derby on its head and allowed Mamelodi Sundowns to beat SuperSport United 2-1.

SuperSport should have taken an early lead when Fikru Tefera broke through the Sundowns backline and held off Esrom Nyandoro but, with just Calvin Marlin to beat, he sliced his shot wide.

On ten minutes the Ethiopian was left unmarked on the edge of the box to pick up a good cross from Jabu Maluleke, but his effort, though well struck, was placed straight at the grateful Marlin.

Sundowns began to dominate possession, but Katlego Mphela and Surprise Moriri simply weren’t getting good enough service to give them a chance against the excellent Morgan Gould and Bongani Khumalo.

Instead, it was Matsatsantsa who looked dangerous whenever they got forward. On 25 minutes, some quick passing gave Maluleke space and time for an effort on goal, but his attempted chip looped over the crossbar.

Ten minutes later United took the lead, with left-winger Lyle Lakay floating a teasing cross into the Sundowns penalty area that was superbly headed home by the unmarked Selolwane.

The Brazilians almost drew level just before half-time, with Moriri heading on target, only for David Kannemeyer to get it away off the goalline.

For much of the second half it seemed as if SuperSport would hold onto their lead or even add to it, but the Brazilians’ strength in depth paid dividends in the end as Khenyeza’s introduction into the game in the 79th minute proved to be the turning point.

The powerful striker brought Sundowns level in the 86th minute, finding space on the outside of Jeffrey Ntuka and finishing beautifully into the far corner with a low, right-footed shot that beat Brown all ends up.

Khenyeza almost put Sundowns ahead on a couple of occasions as the game ticked over into injury time, but it was left for another substitute, Zothwane, to net a dramatic 95th-minute winner with a looping header.

According to Law 13; A player is off-side when he nearer to his opponents goal line than at least two defenders and being in an area of activity! Khenyeza was in an off-side position when the ball was played to him; the goal should have disallowed by the referee Frolik as he has the power to over rule his assistant Jibiliza. Nevertheless three points to Downs!

22ka: at no stage did sundowns promise any player including de one's you've mentioned benefit games. Your team announced that they would be giving Mooki a benefit last year already. Nt even Michael Manzini was promised a benefit game. Now stop exposing your stupidity

although i hate both Sundowns & Hunt,my only worry is Mphela & to tell the truth he's not gonna make History into being a Topscorer again,,reason these Stupid Sundowns supporters will start praising the NEW players when he doesn't score anymore, they gonna be the ones to destroy him just like what the Bucs stupid supporters did to Modise...plz let's get behind our S.A.players & give our full support & stop BOOING them when they're OFF FORM even CHIEFS supporters don't throw any object to players when they underperform.Let's all know that they Human beings like anyone...KHOSI 4 LIFE

Hehehehe, Sundowns are Mamelodi Cheats. They cheated. They bought the referee..hehehe, how does it feel now. Your hard fought win is tainted. How does it feel drunkards?
All in all this was a nice game in the second half. It may be regarded as a derby but naah, the stadium was still not full. And Sundowns cheated...sies! such a good game spoiled by the Cheats...Sundowns bought the referee..that was a clear offside.

Unyoko ocheatile mnqundu wakho. You Kaizer Fried Chips fans are hypocrites. You did not like being called cheats in the Rothmans chp days. How many times have referees made mistakes in favour of Fried Chips? Rothmans 98 and Top 8 2001 finals, 2002 Coke Semis angainst Ajax, 2003 coke last 16 against Santos. So wena Zikonzi (kumbe bathi ungubani) you were a mpumputhe all this time when Chiefs won Millions of rands with the help of the officials. Usuyabona manje when officials make mistakes in favour of other teams. Foetsek and fokoff man

A team that is loosing 1-0 with 4 minutes to go of normal time but goes on to win 2-1 is great. Chempanzees are last people to talk about offside/cheating etc. Bulala Downs bulala!

Well done to sundowns. They showed that they really mean business. I would also want to thank the sundowns fans who created an atmosphere that we have been craving for( except from celtic) which is that of singing. Such atmospheres intensify our teams' home ground advantages. is it me only who thinks mphela is off form? Maybe he could have been dissapointed by not going to Europe.
