Mamelodi Sundowns beat SuperSport United

Posted: 18 September 2010 Time: 22:24

Antonio Lopez Habas will be a happy man after his substitutions turned the Tshwane Derby on its head and allowed Mamelodi Sundowns to beat SuperSport United 2-1.

SuperSport should have taken an early lead when Fikru Tefera broke through the Sundowns backline and held off Esrom Nyandoro but, with just Calvin Marlin to beat, he sliced his shot wide.

On ten minutes the Ethiopian was left unmarked on the edge of the box to pick up a good cross from Jabu Maluleke, but his effort, though well struck, was placed straight at the grateful Marlin.

Sundowns began to dominate possession, but Katlego Mphela and Surprise Moriri simply weren’t getting good enough service to give them a chance against the excellent Morgan Gould and Bongani Khumalo.

Instead, it was Matsatsantsa who looked dangerous whenever they got forward. On 25 minutes, some quick passing gave Maluleke space and time for an effort on goal, but his attempted chip looped over the crossbar.

Ten minutes later United took the lead, with left-winger Lyle Lakay floating a teasing cross into the Sundowns penalty area that was superbly headed home by the unmarked Selolwane.

The Brazilians almost drew level just before half-time, with Moriri heading on target, only for David Kannemeyer to get it away off the goalline.

For much of the second half it seemed as if SuperSport would hold onto their lead or even add to it, but the Brazilians’ strength in depth paid dividends in the end as Khenyeza’s introduction into the game in the 79th minute proved to be the turning point.

The powerful striker brought Sundowns level in the 86th minute, finding space on the outside of Jeffrey Ntuka and finishing beautifully into the far corner with a low, right-footed shot that beat Brown all ends up.

Khenyeza almost put Sundowns ahead on a couple of occasions as the game ticked over into injury time, but it was left for another substitute, Zothwane, to net a dramatic 95th-minute winner with a looping header.

it was a refree's benefit game. What is the duty of assistant refree? Who to blame when a team score 2 goals in an offside position, refree, assistant refree, a club or the president?

Tk and Thivu get to teh point guys. The game is over. Its clear Supersports was robbed today. Adn today an offside became a goal. And today Sundowns defeated Supersports as a result of that offside goal. And today i declare officially that Sundowns are CHEATS. And that is the poit guys. Niyasabana nina. Mina i make the point clear..heheheh. The operating word is TODAY. I hope u noticed.tk.

i wont say supersports were robbed by sundowns. after all mabuti was not a referee. yes we benefited from the assisstant mishap, but these things happen any where, chiefs fans should know better. after all this is what i call drama, you call it cheating, i'm not suprised you are jealous. chiefs are the real beneficiaries of poor referreing

we ddn't play well for most of the match. Nyandoro, Cale & Booth being the major culprits. Cale has added no value since being braught 2 Downs, he must go back 2 Cape Town

look who are questioning Sundowns first goal. Is it a sin when an assistant referee commits ' a human error' in favour of Downs? Jealousy makes people nasty. The main beneficiaries of poor refereeing are feeling threatened now. Undisputed cheaters just shut up because we're coming for you referee or no referee. Uzogcwala nga-bafana be style

Drama and suspense are part of football especially on Derby encounters, but I must say SSU should blame themselves for not burring those chances they were given and wasted them.

I love Chiefs fans (str8): Did mambush ever had a benefit game??? Hes been waiting for 15 yrs now. What about Shai, Masilela etc. Infact i have never heard of Suncheats having a benefit game. They only benefit the refs. Shapa Musona Shapa.
