Thulasizwe Mbuyane scores twice as Orlando Pirates win

Posted: 16 October 2010 Time: 17:28

Mamelodi Sundowns tasted their first defeat of the 2010/11 Premiership season on Saturday afternoon, losing 2-1 to Orlando Pirates at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

Thulasizwe Mbuyane netted a brace for the Buccaneers, while Mabhuti Khenyeza scored late on to ensure a nervy finish.

The first 35 minutes were a disappointment, with neither side able to provide any kind of penetration. Bucs enjoyed the majority of possession put pressure on the Brazilians’ defence whenever Daine Klate and Ruben Cloete combined down the left, but too often the final ball was lacking.

The match finally came to life in the 35th minute when – almost out of nowhere – Pirates took the lead. Mbuyane took advantage of some a defensive lapse from a throw-in and Ezenwa Otorogu’s lay-off to fire a beautiful long-range shot past Calvin Marlin.

Sundowns were disappointing and only managed their first shot on target in the 40th minute, but Moeneeb Josephs hung onto Franklin Cale’s free-kick.

And then Pirates added a second in first half injury-time – a beautifully worked goal which Mbuyane finished. Otorogu played a well-weighted pass to put Andile Jali in behind the backline, and the young midfielder pulled a fine ball back to the far post for Mbuyane to bury.

Sundowns made a double change at the start of the half, throwing on Khenyeza and Lebohang Mokoena. The former almost scored with his touch, hooking a volley onto the crossbar from a corner-kick.

On 55 minutes Mbuyane spurned a glorious chance for a goal that would have brought him his hat-trick and effectively ended the game as a contest, failing to beat Marlin from point-blank range after a great low cross from Klate.

It seemed as if Sundowns’ were destined to be frustrated for the entire 90 minutes, but with just a minute of regulation time left, Khenyeza fired home a volley to make it 2-1 and set-up a nail-biting ending.

There was almost nine minutes of added time – most of it added due to the many injuries suffered by Pirates players in what was a bruising encounter – but the visitors managed to hold out and claim a famous 2-1 win.

Respect, tolarence, caution, and awareness is some of the vocabolary which teams must find their meaning and act accordinly when they are faced with Pirates. Never take us for granted, BUT you can take us like that at your own risk. we are on mission, to attain as much as we can at all 15 PSL teams' expenses!

de pirates aginst sundowns was spilt by de referee, if not careful bafethu dey gonna destroy de beautiful game. hard tackles went unnoticed by dis over rated referee, mostof de bookable offences went un punished by dis referee, sundowns were too physical, ithink we must not talk about this issues cos people might say we are bad losers,de mistakes committed by this seasoned refere are very costly and can end someones career as pelembe indicated on mid week articles. if the refere was a fundi i think he was going to learn from his mistakes but not from this man. the ten minutes added will never accectable as u cannot add optional time on optional time, it puzzled me that rhe so called soccer expects could pick up this bone crushing tackles and mr editor and ur journos i am dissapointed we must lift de bar in terms of anlysis so our football can grow

HOW bad I miss that game as I was fying from Europe to Mzansi as our airline was delayed due to bad whether,I hated those civil aviation people as I badly wanted to be part of this great history making and celebration, how I wish I was there.but watching a replay,Im still convinced that Krol is not the right guy for the job, again he nearly let it go with his substitution. If you invade enemies territory and you happen to find them in slumber, you must completely finish them, lest they wake up,regroup and start firing back. But again, thanks to the boys,Krol must stop being a coward,he must know that we have team to compete and to win things.MTN 8 is not enough, the leaque is what matters most!

Ja, Ja, Ja, people have developed a habit of winning games in the media. I still remember vividly when a picture of the Downs Zimbabwean striker (Mushekwi) was shown in this website and some Sundowns fan even said the boy was going to kill Pirates. Who has killed who now people? We need to live in the real world lapha, and not in the Ivory Tower. The same thing happened in the MTN 8 semi final, and the Prophets of doom were saying Pirates was finished. My response was that may "the best team win". It was also interesting to see comments from the ex-bucs players promising their fans to beat Pirates, i.e. cheeseboy and Mdledle. Yesterday some guy in the Laduma website said should Bucs beat Downs he was going to walk naked in his hometown e-Eastern Cape. This is football for you people, never say never.

I do understand why they are more than happy. i wouldn't than them if we won simply because we are familiar with doing that against them. Next time your injury tactics will work against you. I have to congrat all bucs fans for winning. To all S'Downs supporters, there is always second time in league games. This is the fact: Nyandoro is making life too difficult for other players, he is a passanger.
