Thulasizwe Mbuyane scores twice as Orlando Pirates win

Posted: 16 October 2010 Time: 17:28

Mamelodi Sundowns tasted their first defeat of the 2010/11 Premiership season on Saturday afternoon, losing 2-1 to Orlando Pirates at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

Thulasizwe Mbuyane netted a brace for the Buccaneers, while Mabhuti Khenyeza scored late on to ensure a nervy finish.

The first 35 minutes were a disappointment, with neither side able to provide any kind of penetration. Bucs enjoyed the majority of possession put pressure on the Brazilians’ defence whenever Daine Klate and Ruben Cloete combined down the left, but too often the final ball was lacking.

The match finally came to life in the 35th minute when – almost out of nowhere – Pirates took the lead. Mbuyane took advantage of some a defensive lapse from a throw-in and Ezenwa Otorogu’s lay-off to fire a beautiful long-range shot past Calvin Marlin.

Sundowns were disappointing and only managed their first shot on target in the 40th minute, but Moeneeb Josephs hung onto Franklin Cale’s free-kick.

And then Pirates added a second in first half injury-time – a beautifully worked goal which Mbuyane finished. Otorogu played a well-weighted pass to put Andile Jali in behind the backline, and the young midfielder pulled a fine ball back to the far post for Mbuyane to bury.

Sundowns made a double change at the start of the half, throwing on Khenyeza and Lebohang Mokoena. The former almost scored with his touch, hooking a volley onto the crossbar from a corner-kick.

On 55 minutes Mbuyane spurned a glorious chance for a goal that would have brought him his hat-trick and effectively ended the game as a contest, failing to beat Marlin from point-blank range after a great low cross from Klate.

It seemed as if Sundowns’ were destined to be frustrated for the entire 90 minutes, but with just a minute of regulation time left, Khenyeza fired home a volley to make it 2-1 and set-up a nail-biting ending.

There was almost nine minutes of added time – most of it added due to the many injuries suffered by Pirates players in what was a bruising encounter – but the visitors managed to hold out and claim a famous 2-1 win.

i will repeat this again, soccer is won on the field not from the media utterances or history as records were only made to be broken.Well done pirates once again for proving that the impossible can be made possible and also opening the title race wide open. For sundowns your only pride can be the fact that you were relieved of the pressure of the unbeaten record maybe you can now play better as there is no more pressure.
PERSONALLY I AM TOO HAPPY COZ MY TEAM ARSENAL WON,BEAUTIFUL FOOTBALL PLUS RESULTS VIVA GUNNERS.

@ Mriyo, me n u we watchd d same game. Indeed Krol is in charge n his startin 2 show his experience. 4 Those who are crying 4 subs, I dnt knw y u judging Krol's decisions. U r nt coaches, n let coaches do what dey are best @. If u guys watched the game, sundowns was starting 2 b more physical on our players. D reason y coach took out jali is bcos, we need not 2 lose him 4 d nxt game. He plays a very important role in d club, Mbuyane was injured n of course we needed to defend our lead. I think d goal came bcos of d mistake Mahamutsa by just kicking d ball outside forgetin dat d is wat we call long throw in dat are more similar 2 free kicks.I must congradulate Jali 4 d hard work, d boy made life difficult 4 pattisson in d midfield n he made sure dat pattisson get substituted. I mean d boy dd d same thing when we played KC by closing down Shaba...dis boy is a future..u guys can call a midget or whichever name of hate u prefer...shapa buccanneer shapa
