Mamelodi Sundowns beat Santos 3-1

Posted: 6 February 2011 Time: 17:45

Mamelodi Sundowns’ stand-in coach Ian Gorowa got his tenure off to a winning start as his team beat Santos 3-1 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.

Gorowa’s countryman - Nyasha Mushekwi, was in deadly form early on, netting the opening two goals of the match in a four minute period, while Richard Henyekane scored the other.

Tony Tsabedze got the consolation goal for Santos.

Despite the score-line, it was not one-way traffic with Sundowns putting in a professional and accomplished performance.

The tone was set within 40 seconds as Santos keeper Tshepo Motsoenoeng was forced in to making a double save from Matthew Pattison and Mushekwi.

Santos had their first chance in the sixth minute, through the ever-impressive Erwin Isaacs, who took aim for the top corner from 25 yards, Wayne Sandilands tipped the ball to safety.

Mushekwi got his first in the 16th minute with a superb header, doing really well to beat Wayne Arendse to a corner and power the ball beyond Motsonoeng.

Mushekwi doubled his tally just four minutes later, with his eighth League goal, when he ran onto Pattison’s clever through-ball and found the back of the net, using the space between Motsonoeng’s legs to get it there.

Santos refused to give up, however, and Isaacs was only a yard over the bar with a sweetly-struck free-kick.

The Cape side kept on fighting and pulled a goal back in the 31st minute when Vuyisile Wana floated up a cross to the back post, where Tony Tsabedze side-footed home.

The first chance of the second half didn’t take long to arrive as Lebohang Mokoena curled a shot just over from the edge of the box within a minute of the restart.

Santos had the chance to level matters on the hour mark, but after Wana raced clear of the defence he was unable to hit the net, sending a left-footed shot just wide of the far upright.

Overall though it was the Brazilians who looked slightly more dangerous in attack and a third goal always seemed a possibility, while Santos, despite throwing on several attackers, struggled to breach their opponents’ defence.

There was another chance for Mokoena eight minutes from time, but he was unable to curl his left-footed shot inside the far post, going just wide.

Substitute Mabuthi Khenyeza should really have made it 3-1 in the 80th minute.

With Santos pushing for an equaliser, he found himself with plenty of space and time to hit the target, but from 16-yards out right in front of goal he curled the ball wide.

Richard Henyekane netted his first goal in extra time for the club with an easy tap-in after Elias Pelembe’s square ball.

Sundowns hasn't played with such enthusiasm and freedom in a long time, just goes to show that Habas was the one hoking the team, it was really as sign of the good things to come. South African players perform better when they are free and that is a fact.

Orlando Stadium is where we will be demolishing King and Motlokoa this weekend, can't wait.

Guys, how about meeting before the match?

Sweyts, don't disappoint this time around!

I was wrong about Mwanjali, the guy is improving with each game. But the jury is still out on him. I am glad Pelembe is back to his maurading best, we missed that accurate right boot fo his. Now I see the reason why Krol didnt like Teko. The guy is not strong on the ball, he doesnt put his body between the ball and an opponent. We dont want him to be reckless, but we want him to fight for the ball, in football we dont only use legs and feet, the bodies must also work. We are giving you a chance, for now chief.

I am glad Gorowa benched Mungomeni, that a first positive sign. Replacing Cale was also good. The president should simply let Gorowa finish the season, if he comes second and win one cup then he could earn a contract. A re se ke ra fela maatla Masandawana, we know we are a great team. Lets keep winning, ba sa tlo swaba dihlama tje

Killer who? using guns to fight battles is so 20th century, we now using Poisonous Milkshakes to destroy teams, the name of the poison is called Nyasha Mushweki!

I and Gucci Man, Sbali sami predicted that the battle for the top goal scorer will be between Mushweki and Musona, pity that Habas, Makhanya and Trott wanted to deny us the opportunity of seeing th e2 top Zim marksman vying for the coveted trophy, glad that the possibility is not real!

Who will be the last man standing? i still say my money is on Nyasha!

Sundowns are unstopable when they are free and that is the only change Gorowa brought to the team.

Btw, we still have to convince Motsepe to get rid of Trott and Makhanya because they are worse than Habas!

There is TOO much depth at Downs.......the only worrying area is the technical team. Booth MUST be retired so is Moriri. Their contribution will always be noted but its high time we move on. Mushekwi is DEADLY upfront, well done boy. The race is still on.

King, hee hee, football is unpredictable. Pirates beat us hands down in Pretoria, we agree, but have you ever heard of lighting not striking twice in the same place? I am afraid Cloete is not gonna contribute even one cross, because overlapping is just gonna leave Pelembe alone in that space, and Mshekwi will score a goal out of every three crosses Pelembe will deliver Guys brace yourself for one hell of a fight, a battle, literally speaking, go tlo nyewa gents. And you forget you dont have strikres..................... mahamutsa wont cope with Mushekwi

Sundowns bring quality to the game while we bring what is above quality a GALAXI OF STARS.

I'm gona say this once and I hope you are all paying attention. Come the end of season Kaizer Chiefs will be league champions. You can make your noise for now both Sunclowns and Chibuku fc. It's good that your teams are stimulating but Kaizer Chiefs is the benchmark this season whether you like it or not.
