Kaizer Chiefs endured a frustrating goalless draw against Vasco da Gama on a hot Tuesday night at Athlone Stadium.
The first half was for the most part evenly balanced – Vasco were not unduly troubled, though it was Chiefs who certainly enjoyed the edge.
Chances though were few and far between with Mthokozisi Yende managing a weak attempt before Tlou Molekwane forced keeper Posnett Omony to fist the ball to safety with a rocket of a shot after 22 minutes.
The half at least ended with a bit of a flourish as first Vasco’s Keenin Lesch completely missed the ball when attempting a volley 12-yards out and then Abia Nale, clean through on goal, was denied by Omony, who made a brave save.
Amakhosi were on top after the restart, spending most of their time camped in the Vasco half.
But the home side’s defence was rock solid, with Mokete Tsotetsi in particular in superb form against his former team, meaning that the visitors struggled to find any space in and around the box.
The introduction of both Stanton Lewis and Knowledge Musona added fire-power, yet neither were able to get on the end of any clear-cut chances as Chiefs continued to be frustrated.
The draw gives Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town the chance to steal an advantage over the Phefeni Glamour Boys in the title race on Wednesday while Vasco move another point closer to a second season in the top flight.
