Santos and Pirates draw

Posted: 7 May 2011 Time: 17:02

Orlando Pirates laboured to a 1-1 draw with Santos at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Despite dominating play throughout the 90 minutes, the Sea Robbers needed a last minute equaliser to grab a share of the spoils and remain in the title hunt – two points off leaders Ajax Cape Town.

Pirates conceded as early as the seventh minute, Erwin Isaacs getting on to Ricardo Skippers’ long ball to side-foot home; Jacob Mokhasi caught in no-man’s land.

Pirates stormed back, at least they tried to, but they found it hard to create chances against a resolute Peoples’ team defence.

Dikgang Mabalane was unfortunate to be denied by the post in the 22nd minute after a speedy counter had seen him break free down the right, while just before the break Lucky Lekgwathi flashed a header wide from a corner.

This was little respite for Santos in the second half as they found themselves regularly defending corners and crosses into the box, while the likes of Rooi Mahamutsa and Oupa Manyisa regularly got shots in, most of which were off target or blocked however.

Andile Jali also did his bit in attack and would have picked out the top corner with an 80th minute rocket were it not for a superb save by man-of-the-match Tshepo Motsoeneng.

But finally the pressure paid dividends when in the 90th minute Bongani Ndlulula made space in the box before flicking the ball into the net, with his back still turned partially to goal.

Jali was denied a late winner by yet another Motsoeneng save as the Cape side survived a late onslaught.

Im from the stadium,Pirates players were disappointed about the draw. Mbuyane was outsanding,i dont know what the fuss is all about him. Im concerned about Jali, his passes are poor. It was a great game & Santos were defending in numbers. Where are the chiefs fans who wanted their team to loose?

Chimps will not win this years league, maybe number two if ajax lose against maritzburg. Today was a tough match for us, it was always going to be like that playing in capetown. I am not the kind of supporter who calls a coach names and all that. It is ain stupidity and our teams will be like Aces if fans would allowed to control things. We cannot dominate a league that is competitive like the PSL, look at sundowns they buy players and pay them record breaking salaries but look at where they are from leading the premiership in the first round. Eversince we sold them Teko they are on a downward spiral. Let's realise that in the PSL we are the team that made the most money and we are still there,we have the MTN8 and the nedbank is in our hands. The Absa is an 'if' kinda situation and we have been blocked by the back markers because they always have 1 or 2 points to make!let's be positive about the team and support our boys until the final whistle. That is what fans do!

Ja so much for favours, I am even scared to ask if Pirates wanted a favour from Santos as well(Chiefs and Maritzburg did their bid). For the amptienth time this season sneaking a draw at the death to make sure that the last day of the league remains ever so interesting.

I think the captain's and the coaches contracts should have been finalised, Jomo, the next contract for the coach must not lapst with the season' it does affect the team, my guess is thats what is affecting us now,

Guys does anyone knows what happened behind Sekgolela's exclusion to the team that traveled to CP. Msowoya, otorogo? I think this coach doesn't have an idea of what he is doing. Why always leave Manyambela untill late even though we loosing.

OP PLAYED THEIR BEST FOOTBALL TODAY. I SAW GREAT DETERMINATION AND HUNGER TO WIN FROM OUR PLAYERS. THEY TRIED EVERYTHING. YOU HAVE TO GIVE CREDIT TO SANTOS DEFENCE. THEY CAME WITH A PLAN TO JUST STEAL ONE GOAL AND PACK THE BUS. AS FOR THE TITLE, ITS STILL ON BABY. THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO BLAME EACH OTHER. ITS STILL WITHIN REACH. I SAY ORLANDO PIRATES FANS, LETS RALLY BEHIND OUR TEAM. SOCCER IS UNPREDICTABLE. NOT LONG AGO MANY WERE SAYING CHIEFS ARE OUT OF LEAGUE CONTENTION. SEE HOW QUICKLY THINGS CHANGE. WE CAN WIN THIS LEAGUE. AS FOR ME AND MY FAMILY, WE'LL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR BELOVED TEAM. WIN,LOOSE, DRAW, ALWAYS A BACCANEER.

Tlou has been doing bad the last 6matches, and he is an impact player, but since Klate's injury he played that role, but he is not creative enough, he needs to come in when the other players are tired to do those runs, he did well, but he is not cut out for it' the coach must stay, i still think

Why was that last minute goal was allowed to stand even if a blind person can see that the defender was pushed when he was attempting to clear the ball and the goal was scored

Maybe its because it was a perfect goal. Don't you think? Stop creating yourself stress out of nothing. Soccer is a man's sport and its physical... its not for sissies. Myself and many who watched the game didn't see it the way your hatred eye saw it. Just get over it... Eish some people!!!

Its good thing to have faith but its true only a miracle can save Pirates & for my fellow mabhakaniya we must be prepared for a great disappointment because its ecven more difficult to win the last game and think Ajax will throw away points against Maritzburg!
