Chiefs crush Ajax to stay alive

Posted: 7 May 2011 Time: 16:56

Kaizer Chiefs have produced one of the finest performances of this PSL season to destroy Absa Premiership leaders Ajax Cape Town 4-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The win keeps Chiefs slender hopes of the title alive as they now need to win their final game of the campaign against AmaZulu on May 21, and hope Ajax lose to Maritzburg United at the same time.

The Chiefs goals were scored by Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Knowledge Musona and Siphiwe Tshabalala (two) in a marvellous display of attacking football.

Chiefs had a big shout for a penalty inside the first two minutes as Ajax goalkeeper Hans Vonk brought down Mandla Masango. The keeper got none of the ball and Ajax could count their lucky stars that the referee failed to point to the spot.

But the home side were ahead on 21 minutes with a well-worked goal. The Ajax defence gave Chiefs all the time and space in the world and Letsholonyane had the time and space to side-foot home from the edge of the area.

After Vonk had saved well from Masango, Chiefs got there second as Tshabalala went on a mazy run before crossing brilliantly with the outside of his boot for Musona to head home. The third goal duly arrived on 42 minutes and this time Tshabalala was the scorer. Masango freed Josta Dladla on the right and he crossed for Tshabalala to side-foot home.

There was more bad news for Chiefs before the break as Terror Fanteni received a needless yellow card for playing on after the whistle had blown and that booking means he sits out the championship decider against Maritzburg United on May 21.

And soon afterwards they had a goal disallowed in controversial fashion as Derek Decamps was adjudged to have fouled Khune at the corner, but replays showed the keeper simply missed the ball in a melee of bodies.

Ajax were better after the break, seeing more of the ball and creating a few half-chances.

But Musona should have made the scoreline 4-0 when he had time and space with not a defender in sight, but hit his volley against the upright.

The Chiefs fans did not have to wait long for the fourth goal though as it duly arrived on 68 minutes. Masango once again found acres of space on the right and he unselfishly crossed for Tshabalala to convert the easiest of tap-ins.

Nhlanhla Vilakazi had an excellent chance to reduce the deficit for Ajax when he found himself one-on-one with Itumeleng Khune, but the shot was too close to the keeper.

This will teach Ajex's Evans to respect big clubs. He talked too much before the game and put his head on the block saying, "CHIEFS CANNOT BEAT US."

All the same I wish Ajex to win their last game to win the ABSA championship.

I hope Gcubile will not be the referee of that game.

If I were Motaung o wud fire VV for 2day's win. Why such a huge win against a team on top of the log while u drop points against bo Vasco ? But truth be told Ajx have been lyk this all season. They have played kak away and won almost all their home games. O expect them to won easily against MU. Plus MU now no longer have to worry about the play-offs so o don't c them causing an upset.

Remember these days Pie-rats R just playing 4 draws & losses. They cant stand de pressure all de favours were on deir side 2day. They must nt blame de Coach who so far took dem 2 d currente position ther R now. They even won de trophy after 10 yers with dis coach, so they must stop crucifying Krol. They should hev rapped up long ago, but their quality z semi-finished (it seems).

And it takes Chiefs until you have a mountain to climb to show such charaters. It was pretty with lots of flair but little too late and not even in your hands. Good display nonetheless
