AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns draw

Posted: 4 May 2011 Time: 21:28

AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns drew 1-1 in a League match on Wednesday night.

The result sees the Brazilians fall four points behind league leaders Ajax Cape Town with two games in hand. Their poor finishing has probably cost them a chance at the League title.

Sundowns dictated terms from the opening whistle as the stroked the ball around the park in immaculate style and dominated the possession stakes.

The Brazilians created chance after chance but they continuously squandered their goal scoring opportunities with some woeful finishing.

For AmaZulu, they were virtually non-existent and looked to be chasing shadows in the first half. That was until the Brazilians made a mistake at the back.

Sundowns scored in the 33rd minute when Katlego Mphela gave them the lead. A great move down the left by Sundowns saw Mathew Pattison attacking down the wing before he supplied a pin-point cross to find Mphela inside the box. The striker did not disappoint with a powerful header into the top right-hand corner, 1-0.

Thereafter ‘Downs continued to dictate the flow of play, but a lapse of concentration at the back saw them conceded a goal just before the half time break.

Sibusiso Hadebe whipped in a free-kick from the right and as Sundowns’ Siyanda Xulu tried to clear the danger he only succeeded in deflecting the ball past his own goalkeeper, 1-1.

The second half continued in the same vein as Sundowns attacked at will, but were unable to find that second goal.

Two substitutes in the form of Lebohang Mokoena and Mabhuti Khenyeza combined to create a good scoring chance in the 70th minute. Mokoena drove down the right flank and provided a dangerous low cross to find Khenyeza inside the box, but Mzimela produced a fine save diving to his right.

Three minutes later and Mphela should really have given his side the lead. The striker latched onto a loose ball after a goal mouth scramble, but he dragged his shot wide from ten yards out.

In the 81st minute AmaZulu nearly stole the lead against the run of play when Belux Kasonga met a cross from the right, but he saw his header cleared off the goal line by Method Mwanjali, heading the ball onto the underside of the crossbar before fully clearing the danger.

Sundowns pressed hard in the final ten minutes, but they failed to find the goal that would keep them in the title race as AmaZulu and the Brazilians shared the spoils.

gorowa made a substitution of cale 4 mphela and when the coach tried to shake mphela s hand the seemingly annoyed katlego jst ignored hm,spat on the ground and kicked a juice bottle near him. For a player who s hailed as a national hero to behave like that,ai its so shameful

Dear Masandawana

Lets not give up everything, even if we may not win the league this year, our team is slowly improving to be one of the untouchable teams in the future. We only need to fix our management, Get another brilliant, I mean really good coach this time, Not much mingling with our players, but at least beef up the backline, because thats were we were let down particularly last night. There are still more other seasons to come and lets not give up hope of improving our team.

Maxy: what is the average age at Mamelodi Sundowns now that you are planning for the future, talking about a team that is improving.

Are we still talking about age, while guys like Giggs in Manchester are still banging goals while approaching 40. Look at Man, Chels, and Barc, How much did they do in chopping and changing, not much like our SA teams. Look all PSL teams have changed coaches and players around for the past 4 seasons. And we expect us to grow, no. Imagine growing up in a family where Mothers and Fathers are just changing left right and centre. No, this apply to all PSL teams, my brother.
