AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns draw

Posted: 4 May 2011 Time: 21:28

AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns drew 1-1 in a League match on Wednesday night.

The result sees the Brazilians fall four points behind league leaders Ajax Cape Town with two games in hand. Their poor finishing has probably cost them a chance at the League title.

Sundowns dictated terms from the opening whistle as the stroked the ball around the park in immaculate style and dominated the possession stakes.

The Brazilians created chance after chance but they continuously squandered their goal scoring opportunities with some woeful finishing.

For AmaZulu, they were virtually non-existent and looked to be chasing shadows in the first half. That was until the Brazilians made a mistake at the back.

Sundowns scored in the 33rd minute when Katlego Mphela gave them the lead. A great move down the left by Sundowns saw Mathew Pattison attacking down the wing before he supplied a pin-point cross to find Mphela inside the box. The striker did not disappoint with a powerful header into the top right-hand corner, 1-0.

Thereafter ‘Downs continued to dictate the flow of play, but a lapse of concentration at the back saw them conceded a goal just before the half time break.

Sibusiso Hadebe whipped in a free-kick from the right and as Sundowns’ Siyanda Xulu tried to clear the danger he only succeeded in deflecting the ball past his own goalkeeper, 1-1.

The second half continued in the same vein as Sundowns attacked at will, but were unable to find that second goal.

Two substitutes in the form of Lebohang Mokoena and Mabhuti Khenyeza combined to create a good scoring chance in the 70th minute. Mokoena drove down the right flank and provided a dangerous low cross to find Khenyeza inside the box, but Mzimela produced a fine save diving to his right.

Three minutes later and Mphela should really have given his side the lead. The striker latched onto a loose ball after a goal mouth scramble, but he dragged his shot wide from ten yards out.

In the 81st minute AmaZulu nearly stole the lead against the run of play when Belux Kasonga met a cross from the right, but he saw his header cleared off the goal line by Method Mwanjali, heading the ball onto the underside of the crossbar before fully clearing the danger.

Sundowns pressed hard in the final ten minutes, but they failed to find the goal that would keep them in the title race as AmaZulu and the Brazilians shared the spoils.

Big teams are judged on the number of league titles they have won over the years. in their 46yrs, Chiefs have won the league 8x- that's the same number as Sundowns who are on course to win the league for the unprecedented 9th time (6th PSL Title).
The reason why chiefs owners and supporters alike tend to believe that cup competitions are the measure of success is because the league's prize money is underprized.
The league championship should be worth at least R20million instead of R10million which is close to MTN 8's prize money.
Perhaps the PSL should consider cutting the grant which is received clubs by at R100k that would mean, R19.2million (100k x 16 teams x 12 months) goes towards the prize money for winning the championship plus the R10million- that's close to R30million.
Once our championship is more valuable than winning the MTN 8- small clubs and chiefs alike may start taking the league much more seriously along with the investments which goes towards building a formidable team that is equipped to challenge for both cup competitions and the league.
Perhaps spend more on development instead of trying to find the next available cheap players

i hate chiefs fans (gays) :2011-05-04 19:17

Pierates players, fans and their coach are concetrating too much on chiefs winning against ajax forgetting dat they still hav to win against santos. Need i remind u that santos is the same as SSU. They always giv u hard times especially in the cape. My prediction is that ajax is gona win against chiefs then win the league, pierats to lose. Chibuku fans will be crying a river once.

Eish , what a heartbreak!

Now, it really a mathematical chance.

Mathematically : Chiefs can reach a maximum of 59 points (Hence these bustards are OUT), Sundowns can get a maximum of 61 points (Hence a win for Ajax on Saturday will ensure that these MADALAs are OUT), Pirates can get a maximum of 62 points(Hence they are still in it BIG TIME) and Ajax can get a maximum of 65 points (Hence it is theirs to loose FINALLY!!

I foresee something amusing to happen this weekend at Polokwane, we will have Chiefs fans cheering for Ajax and we will have pirates fans cheering for chiefs. So these weekend we will be watching : Ajax Chiefs vs Kaizer Pirates and the final score will be Ajax Chiefs 3 - Kaizer Pirates 0.

All is not lost angeke saphel'amandla. Xulu, you are a good player bt as a defender, the word ' safety first' shud always be in your mind.

What we need to do as khosi is to loose on Sati and then, a zo phela maphupho. But again, maybe we dont even have to loose, since Chibuku fc and clowns will loose their respective games.

This article is misleading! sundoms did not dominate the game last night!!! Same thing happened when they won against Chiefs last weekend. They were given high scores just because they defended well in the second half and scored from their chances! Sometimes I fail to understand these so called soccer analysts in South Africa
