Orlando Pirates beat Moroka Swallows

Posted: 6 April 2011 Time: 22:06

Orlando Pirates are back on top of the League standings after a 2-0 win against Moroka Swallows on Wednesday evening.

Dikgang Mabalane continued his impressive return from long-term injury by scoring both goals early in the match.

With Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns drawing 4-4 in Atteridgeville, Bucs took full advantage of their two title rivals dropping points and now lead the standings on goal-difference ahead of the Urban Warriors.

The Birds, meanwhile, remain in the relegation play-off spot (15th), missing out on the chance to leapfrog Maritzburg United, who were thumped 4-1 by Free State Stars earlier in the day.

Pirates got off to a flyer thanks to the two early goals from Mabalane. The winger had netted a goal in a weekend cup win over United FC, his first appearance after a long injury lay-off, and he continued his form against the Birds, beating Greg Etafia with a well-struck drive from just outside the area.

And seven minutes later the hosts sent their winger free on goal – he coolly waited for Etafia to go to ground before chipping it over the keeper to net his second.

Swallows’ best chance to before the break arrived in the 38th minute when Siyabonga Nomvete fired in a low shot, only for Senzo Meyiwa to make a fine save. Left Tsutsulupa was first to the rebound, but he failed to direct his shot on target.

The second half saw few scoring chances for either team, with Pirates seemingly content to sit on their lead. The Birds’ best effort came from Oscar Machapa in the 74th minute, with the Zimbabwean driving a fierce long-range shot just wide.

Both Thulasizwe Mbuyane and substitute Katlego Mashego had chances to do so in the dying minutes, but they both scooped their shots over the crossbar.

This has got to hurt, and I mean really, really bad. Musunu fanatics I am not even going to entertain because they are irrelevant now. Sundowns you were praying for an Ajax victory against us not too long ago even your coach could not help but openly wish for a Bucs defeat and then the barrage of haters came down on us hard. Now what we wished for was a tie between these two teams it happened. We predicted a victory against Swallows especially after they let themselves lose to an inferior opponent last week because losing becomes a habit if you let it; just like winning. UP THE BUCS!!!

3 is our lucky number. When we lost 3-0 to Ajax coupla weeks back & the so called 3-1 & 3-0 "massacre" the Kaizerbels were so excited celebrating like they've won the league unbeknown to them that that was the beginning of a 17 games unbeaten run. If I were them I'd be really worried cause after the Ajax 3-0 loss another 17 unbeaten run was just beginning. Now it's 2 games unbeaten and counting and that should scare the hell out of them because we on top where we belong now with 15 games to go, but with only 4 league games left and 3 games to the Nedbank finals I foresee a TREBBLE (3). . . The balance of the 17 games we'll carry them over into the 2011/2012!!!

Im impressed by Msowoya, his workrate and Im sure if Krol continue to feild him,we will take the leaque.as for Mabalane, you are a star bru.you are simply doing what bo Mashego has failed in as many games. But we were suppose to beat Swallows by an avalanche of goals.
As for Ajax Chimps and Sundowns you will regret this draw come end of the season.

Don't think Ajax will struggle against remaining teams - home games are usually strong for the Cape teams and Chiefs always motivating. Where will Pirates slip up? I know ...

Well done bucs. I must say Oupa Manyisa is doing a great job & giving us options going forward. Jali please work on your shooting, you cannot move to a bigger league until you get it right. Msowoya is the real deal & he'll bring more goals to the Ghost but i am still confused about uThulasizwe son of Krol.
