Bloemfontein Celtic, Orlando Pirates share the spoils

Posted: 6 March 2011 Time: 18:45

The crunch Premiership game between Bloemfontein Celtic and Orlando Pirates at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Sunday afternoon ended in an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Both goals were scored in the last 20 minutes of the game, with Katlego Mashego putting Bucs into the lead before Siphelele Mthembu equalised for Phunya Sele Sele.

The first notable action of the game saw Ruben Cloete test Celtic’s Patrick Tignyemb with a stinging long-range free-kick in the 11th minute that forced the goalkeeper into a good save low to his right.

Bucs weren’t really able to create any clear scoring chances in the first half, though they certainly looked threatening with their shooting prowess from long range.

Oupa Manyisa fired a dipping effort just wide of the target in the 17th minute and eight minutes later Andile Jali rattled the underside of the crossbar with a superb drive from 25 metres out that had Tignyemb beaten.

Celtic had enjoyed their fair share of possession but didn’t threaten a goal until the end of the first half when after a determined run Lennox Bacela sliced his effort wide with only Senzo Meyiwa to beat.

The second half was much of the same, with the teams looking to attack but struggling to create genuine opportunities.

Then, in the 72nd minute, Pirates broke the deadlock almost from nowhere.

Bucs strung together an attack and for once the Celtic defence was all at sea, Mashego cut back onto his left foot and scored with a deflection off Thabo Nthethe.

Celtic coach Clinton Larsen reacted to going behind by throwing on Bennett Chenene and Mthembu, and the two on-loan Pirates players repaid their coach’s faith almost immediately.

The pair combined to bring Phunya Sele Sele level in the 81st minute, with Chenene playing in a low cross from the left and Mthembu providing a composed and classy finish.

Both sides had spells in what remained of the game when they looked like scoring a late winner, but in the end the final whistle saw the match locked at 1-1.

Now they are starting to crack, it was only a matter of WHEN AND NOT IF they were going to crack, watch them in the next game, no points from the young Urban Warriors, and then they will do what they are renowned for, wailing as if someone has died, OMAKHALANJALO, hahaha!!!!

6games to go, one more imported game against Ajax, a draw on that game will elevate us towards the championship, and the game between Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns will go a long way helping us staying on top, for I see only one team going down between the two!

This was a tough match, a game of records. We can celebrate for keeping our record and the top position. I would have loved to collect all three points but its ok, better than a lose.

I wish Otorogu can patner Mashego. What happened to Otorogu and Msowoya. These are very good strikers. Next game against Ajax there will be plenty of opportunities as ajax are also an attacking side. We cant afford to start with Mabena or Chansa, we need Otorogu.

Phenyo is disappointing and Mayambela must pull up his socks. Mayambela's shooting is awful! He really needs to work on this aspect of the game.

Swona stop dreaming my friend.after Ajax whip ur stinking asses it won't end there. U still have Swallows who will rise to the occasion to avoid play-offs.Owen Da Gama has a score to wiht the Rats nd then there is anada trip to CT to face the bus drivers Santos. Gavin Hunt will also want save his job @ de expense of Chibuku FC. The only game that u can win is against Arrows but that is also nt guaranteed. By the way ur team has a team a history of failing at the last hurdle.I don't think this year will be any diffrent.once you lose to Ajax you will neva recover.

Here is how Pirates will get their 10 points to win the league.
1. Ajax (3)
2. Swallows (3)
3. Plate ya Nama Stars (3)
4. Supersport (3)

After that Pirates will be on 62 points after 28 games, the points against Santos and Arrows will be irrelevant.

Ajax do not have the backing of the crowds in the time of need, that's why they will struggle to win during the latter stages of the league, they don't have the nerves of steel..!
