Bloemfontein Celtic, Orlando Pirates share the spoils

Posted: 6 March 2011 Time: 18:45

The crunch Premiership game between Bloemfontein Celtic and Orlando Pirates at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Sunday afternoon ended in an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Both goals were scored in the last 20 minutes of the game, with Katlego Mashego putting Bucs into the lead before Siphelele Mthembu equalised for Phunya Sele Sele.

The first notable action of the game saw Ruben Cloete test Celtic’s Patrick Tignyemb with a stinging long-range free-kick in the 11th minute that forced the goalkeeper into a good save low to his right.

Bucs weren’t really able to create any clear scoring chances in the first half, though they certainly looked threatening with their shooting prowess from long range.

Oupa Manyisa fired a dipping effort just wide of the target in the 17th minute and eight minutes later Andile Jali rattled the underside of the crossbar with a superb drive from 25 metres out that had Tignyemb beaten.

Celtic had enjoyed their fair share of possession but didn’t threaten a goal until the end of the first half when after a determined run Lennox Bacela sliced his effort wide with only Senzo Meyiwa to beat.

The second half was much of the same, with the teams looking to attack but struggling to create genuine opportunities.

Then, in the 72nd minute, Pirates broke the deadlock almost from nowhere.

Bucs strung together an attack and for once the Celtic defence was all at sea, Mashego cut back onto his left foot and scored with a deflection off Thabo Nthethe.

Celtic coach Clinton Larsen reacted to going behind by throwing on Bennett Chenene and Mthembu, and the two on-loan Pirates players repaid their coach’s faith almost immediately.

The pair combined to bring Phunya Sele Sele level in the 81st minute, with Chenene playing in a low cross from the left and Mthembu providing a composed and classy finish.

Both sides had spells in what remained of the game when they looked like scoring a late winner, but in the end the final whistle saw the match locked at 1-1.

By the way, at least the draws are not dropping us in terms of standings on the log but sustaining us unlike others, where are they? The first was a draw against us which brought them to number 2, then against Vasco which further relegated them to 3rd and now FFS relegated them further more to 4th. One is wondering what other team are going to do...which means they will drop each game to number 15.

Thanx Celtic 4 denying Rats 2 points. Some Rats fan I watched the game with were saying they will score a winner in injury time becos that is what they specialise. I just hope this is a start of dropping points 4 dem. By the way if Maritzburg did not lose concentration in the las minutes this wud have been their 4th draw in a row.Let's c if they draw with Ajax in CT.

The heat is on. Pi-rats will start faking diarrhoea, constipation and vaginal bleeding like they did in 2005 and they went on to lose the league to chiefs and they cried like hell.

But realistically Pirates is sometimes too casual at the back & often we concede goals unnecessarily & always against the run of play!
How can Lucky & Rooi both run flat without one of them picking or guiding Celtic strikers. That was pathetic defending & we were not suppose to have conceded that goal.
Guys after today's game I'm not sure if we can convincingly win the league.its like we are also depending too much on Tlou & if he is not around we struggle a bit.
To me Mabena is a machancer,I'm sorry but this boy cannot be trusted & he is not Bucs material.

Your team is not going to this league.
The league is between Microsoft fc and Ajax.
You always warm the top spot for others.

Bucs wil be champions come the end of may. Ur weakest link is that we tend to loose posession & concentration as soon as we score a leading goal. We coud have easilly walked away wid 3 points. We need otorugu & msowoya upfront as mabena & ndulula are not powerful enough. Up the Bucs!

The reason Pirates could not play their normal game and the reason why Celtics do well is the size of the ground, it is a small ground and it does not allow you to play a passing game, Long runs are impossible. Anyway it was a good game.

He who laughs last laughs better, he he once more again Pee-rats now are starting to get frustrated because things are not going as they are planning, their coach fails to be tactically instead he believes in his shirt colour. As the coluor of the shirt is fading also the Pie-rats are fading gradually. This week they will be knocked out that is not debatable but it is a sure Mpela will destroy them alone and Ajax will rub salt in their injury.
