Kaizer Chiefs draw with Santos in Cape Town

Posted: 20 February 2011 Time: 17:48

Santos held Kaizer Chiefs to a 2-2 draw during a drama-filled Premiership game at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The first half was action packed, with Chiefs enjoying the better of play, creating numerous chances on goal, while Santos always looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Amakhosi were rampant in the opening stages and Kaizer Motaung Jnr almost opened the scoring when he lobbed Tshepo Motsoeneng in the 11th minute, but the Santos keeper was able to get a crucial touch to send the ball wide of goal.

Motsoeneng followed that up as he made a brave save from Tinashe Nengomashe’s well-connected shot from the resultant corner.

There were also snap shots for Knowledge Musona and Reneilwe Letsholonyane as the visitors ran rampant early on.

However, it was the Peoples’ Team who took a surprise 23rd minute lead when Vuyisile Wana raced onto Salmaan King’s outstanding through ball and coolly rounded Ithumeleng Khune before finishing into an empty net.

Chiefs came straight back at Santos and their efforts paid off in when Jimmy Tau stormed into the box to get on the end of Musona’s through ball, where he was tripped by Ricardo Skippers.

Musona took the spot-kick and easily converted, making it 1-1.

The remainder of the half saw the Soweto giants continuing to dominate, there was no addition to the scoreline.

Chiefs were close to scoring just after the break, but Motsoeneng was again up the task, making a breathtaking save from Motaung’s header.

It was at the other end that the next goal came, Jurie Basie putting Santos 2-1 up with a glancing header after King’s lobbed cross into the box after 52 minutes.

But the Soweto side were back to level terms just over 20 minutes later when Sthembiso Ngcobo emphatically headed home Tshabalala’s deflected cross.

Chiefs were denied an 84th minute penalty when Musona's shot appeared to hit Wayne Arendse's arm.

Both sides had their moments in a thrilling finale, but neither side really came close to scoring as the match ended all square.

So Khune is a super human being who is not suppose to make mistakes. Ag maan please guys give this boy a break, he has been consistent and 2 nyana mistakes and now Pitso must drop him, for what.

Khune remain the best keeper in SA and no 1 ball distributor in the whole world, its just that, Chiefs defends is very weak.

No1 ball distributor in the world? well that is your opinion of which you are entitled to, but i beg to differ. Best keeper is S.A YES, but best ball distributor in the world NO!

@King,

The unreliable Senzo, was doing that against Amazulu. Thats not what makes a great keeper. The best keeper stops goals from hitting the net.

I said it, Pap and cabbage FC are weak defensively. The only reason why they are still chasing us is because of the llikes of Gcubule, that demon of theirs and abdul. Penalty FC! I saw the chimpanzees jumping up and down when Kaizer Amazulu Chimpanzees score, only to be disapointed a few minutes later.

I agree with most people here, Itu is way overated, he is costing us, conceding everygame but our backline must also take the blame. Tau is always caught out of position. The Rats will kill us if we dont fix that defence. i am dissapointed that we donated another two points against the captonains. Shabba was also off form or maybe he was thinking about the Rats.

Proud Kaizer Pap and Cabbage!

Superblind,

All the Junos and match officials support Kaizer Pap and Cabbage. Yes the penalty was soft but we scored it. Did you expect these people to be Rats like you. Come, everybody knows that we have great support because we are the best. Check Sowetan poll today. Pap and Cabbage 66% and Rats 33%. So continue to complain or go hang!

So Pap fc fans have a short memory- for they are in no position to brag about the derby as they know very well what happened the last two times? They say we have a tendency to live in the past...hehehehe- but the past will become the future this weekend exactly at 17h15, 26th Feb 2011!

Not a bad game at all, under the circumstances. When we play teams who want to play we will whoop them, if teams defend for 90min and hope to catch us on the break this will happen. Great comeback Khosi. We are proud of our boys. Now we can put metal to the peddal, one last defensive team then we are well on our way to be crowned the champs. Soccer to be exciting needs goals, we are scoring and teams are scoring from us. This is what makes idiski exciting...
