Ajax Cape Town thrash Orlando Pirates at Newlands

Posted: 16 March 2011 Time: 21:27

Ajax Cape Town outclassed Orlando Pirates with a 3-0 win at Newlands Stadium on Wednesday night.

Pirates simply had no answer to Ajax’s sensational attacking abilities.

The first half saw the Urban Warriors dominating play as they kept Pirates pinned back in their own half.

Indeed, the visiting side struggled to create any clear-cut chances as the likes of Andile Jali and Clifford Ngobeni had their influences on the game minimised.

With Thulani Serero and Khama Billiat creating all kinds of problems for the Sea Robbers’ defence, the first real chance fell the way of the home side.

It was George Maluleka who set up Brent Carelse for a chance on goal with a cross-field pass, but Carelse’s control let him down and Senzo Meyiwa was able to intervene.

Ajax took the lead in the 25th minute when, after some clever passing in the Pirates box, Billiat slammed the ball into the bottom corner of the net from 14-yards out.

The balance of the half saw the Cape side frustrating the Soweto team and it could well have been 2-0 if Billiat had been more accurate with his 38th minute angled shot following the masterful Serero’s through ball.

Bucs started the second half brightly, but found themselves 2-0 down after 54 minutes when Serero raced clear down the right before teeing up Billiat, who picked out the top corner with a side-footer.

A minute alter it was 3-0 as Maluleka struck a sublime left-footer into the top corner from 20-yards, having used a clever touch to make space.

Mark Mayambela had two late chances, but in the end it was the Cape side who ran out deserved winners after a thrilling night’s action.

Love the passion of the South African fans. We do however need to learn from Bloemfontein Celtic fans about being a super collective so that atmosphere can return to all our stadiums. The vuvuzela is so last year.
