Mamelodi Sundowns beat Moroka Swallows

Posted: 2 February 2011 Time: 23:00

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 away victory over relegation-threatened Moroka Swallows at the Mbombela Stadium.

Nyasha Mushekwi continued his form in the absence of want-away striker Katlego Mphela, scoring an early goal that set the tone, while defender Method Mwanjali made it 2-0 midway through the second half.

The result is yet another blow to the Birds, who remain second from bottom on the log and next have a tough away game against Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

The Brazilians got off to a perfect start, with Mushekwi scoring in the first minute of the game with a low shot.

There were no further notable attacking moments in the first half, though Swallows certainly looked desperate to try and get a foothold in the game but could find no way through the visitors’ defence.

The Birds shuffled their pack at the start of the second half, sending on striker Brad Ritson in place of the ineffective Shaun Haschick, but the Birds still lacked a potent goal threat.

Sundowns almost doubled their lead in the 53rd minute, with Elias Pelembe firing a good shot on target from a free kick, but Greg Etafia made a fine save to keep his side in contention.

Yet there was nothing the Nigerian shot-stopper could do to prevent Mwanjali’s goal in the 68th minute, with the Zimbabwean defender crashing home a shot from the edge of the box to kill off the game.

Sundowns took their foot off the pedal after the second goal, and even a debut for marquee signing Teko Modise didn’t really spark them back to life, but they had done enough to wrap up the points.

The win sees Sundowns move to third place on 35 points, leapfrogging Ajax Cape Town who drew away to Bloemfontein Celtic.

Swallows are still in 15th place, three points ahead of Black Aces but a full six points adrift of the safety of 14th place, presently occupied by Maritzburg United.

Weldone team, I am happy of the result, we can't afford dropping points. I am still concern with our midfielders of Mutizwa, Ngubane & Cale. The coach need to start building a very consistant midfielders combination. Papi, Teko, Pelembe, Mokoena, Moriri, Pattison & Nyandoro. The Sky is the Limit

Surely the race is between Pirates and Sundowns, with due respect to the noise making Kaizer chimpanzees, they may only be in with the chance if the referees will keep helping them and keep giving Sundowns and Pirates yellow cards. But so far that works for Pirates because the other teams dont know what to expect from us. Every now and then two players miss games due to suspension, so the sturbon Kroll is forced to make changes.

I hope Teko start the next game, we need him in the national team. We cant progress ka bo nyawana fela.I told people that Teko is not finished or off form. I bet Sundowns wont lose against the chimpanzees as long as Teko is in the field of play.

hey i saw Mbesuma killing the defence of kaizer bobby Fc, that back line of chimpans is very shaky and if they get real striker they bound to loose witha a big margin
i am not convinced with Kaizerbobby fc win

@skye,

Spot on, thats my observation too. Chiefs are very weak at the back. the wistleman, breakfast punch and Nehiway are the weakest links. They look better with Jambo but he does not give them options in attack. One of these days the Chimpanzees are going to concead 5 goals in one game. The spiderwrestler wont know what hit him.

@ least you are not denying that this clause is stupid and prevent players a legitimate chance to prove their ability again the coach or management who don't believe in their ability...I don't care who and when it was started, its still a stupid deal in a modern football and maybe that is why chiefs does not do it any more!!!!

the way some morons interprete football is astonishing. if a person asks you how many times liverpool won the league, you will get the answer 18. man united 18. chelsea 4 and the rest. the English league was called the Premier League in 1992 but that did not erase the fact that liverpool has won the league 18 times and man utd 7 times before them. only a stupid person will claim that the man utd has only won the league 11 times.

now, for those morons who think sundowns has won the league more times than any other team, go back to when the league started to be regarded as professional and not post-psl.
