Mamelodi Sundowns beat Moroka Swallows

Posted: 2 February 2011 Time: 23:00

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 away victory over relegation-threatened Moroka Swallows at the Mbombela Stadium.

Nyasha Mushekwi continued his form in the absence of want-away striker Katlego Mphela, scoring an early goal that set the tone, while defender Method Mwanjali made it 2-0 midway through the second half.

The result is yet another blow to the Birds, who remain second from bottom on the log and next have a tough away game against Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

The Brazilians got off to a perfect start, with Mushekwi scoring in the first minute of the game with a low shot.

There were no further notable attacking moments in the first half, though Swallows certainly looked desperate to try and get a foothold in the game but could find no way through the visitors’ defence.

The Birds shuffled their pack at the start of the second half, sending on striker Brad Ritson in place of the ineffective Shaun Haschick, but the Birds still lacked a potent goal threat.

Sundowns almost doubled their lead in the 53rd minute, with Elias Pelembe firing a good shot on target from a free kick, but Greg Etafia made a fine save to keep his side in contention.

Yet there was nothing the Nigerian shot-stopper could do to prevent Mwanjali’s goal in the 68th minute, with the Zimbabwean defender crashing home a shot from the edge of the box to kill off the game.

Sundowns took their foot off the pedal after the second goal, and even a debut for marquee signing Teko Modise didn’t really spark them back to life, but they had done enough to wrap up the points.

The win sees Sundowns move to third place on 35 points, leapfrogging Ajax Cape Town who drew away to Bloemfontein Celtic.

Swallows are still in 15th place, three points ahead of Black Aces but a full six points adrift of the safety of 14th place, presently occupied by Maritzburg United.

Mr, Editor, of whoever wrote this story, please dont smoke ganja before writing. Did Sundowns play with ten players? Someone is stupid here, either the readers or the writer of the story. I rest my case.

"catch us if you can" its also applicable in the teams under you.

Thina sithi 100% behind Kroll and One game at the time.

The game between Sundowns and Pirates is going to be big, with Cheese,Teko and Mdledle. Teko is the best and now i understand why Pitso said"if i dont select him, show me a player of his caliber we can select"

Swallows will do the damage on Sartuday.

Even though we are exited with the win. I will still not be content with the fact that habas destroyed the 7 point lead which we once had. And if that lead was maintained and improved we would be cruising on top of the league. But lets hope the guys will bounce back.

kante why every publication and the media hates mamelodi sundowns? on monday on coca cola soccer zone they asked this question" is the sun going down at sundowns" why ask this rubbish...every team can go thru a bad spell, look at chelsea and man city for instance, they have indifferent results...but the british media won't write this utter nonsense about these teams. i have come to the conclusion that every tom( tshepo mabona) and this biased publication have a hidden agenda with sundowns, they are trying by all means to distabilize 'downs, but they won't succeed. i hate the way kickoff report on sundowns. sundowns is the only successful team on the era of psl, no individual can destroy a brand. give sundowns due respect like you do to pirates and chiefs....................................sis
