Orlando Pirates beat Golden Arrows

Posted: 19 January 2011 Time: 21:28

Golden Arrows were no match for a well-drilled Orlando Pirates side that eased their way to a 2-0 win at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Isaac Chansa put the Sea Robbers in the lead in the first half and the visitors clinched the points when Siyabonga Sangweni netted an own-goal in the second half.

Arrows would have come into this game very confident, having put in a five star performance over the weekend to beat their neighbours AmaZulu, but showed their opponents too much respect in this contest and ultimately paid the price, lacking the necessary verve to bag three points.

After a dreary opening ten minutes, the nearly 5,000 spectators in attendance were off their feet when Pirates’ Isaac Chansa found himself with only Arrows keeper Helton Da Rocha to beat but he shot over the bar.

Arrows got their supporters excited in the 20th minute when it looked like Norikazu Murakami found the back of the Pirates net with a powerful header from Itumeleng Duiker’s cross but their joy lasted for only a moment as the ball had actually crashed into the side netting.

The hosts should have taken the lead with the very next move when Siyabonga Nkosi powered down the right flank and sent in a pin-point cross to an unmarked Collins Mbesuma, unfortunately for Arrows the striker headed over from close range.

Arrows coach Zoran Fillipovic would have been disappointed at the manner in which his team conceded the first goal. Chansa, who is renowned for his striking abilities from distance, made the most of the shooting space given to him in the 28th minute. He duly obliged by firing home a powerful shot from about 20 metres away.

The visitors pulled further ahead in the 49th minute when Arrows defender Siyabonga Sangweni diverted Tlou Segolela’s corner kick into his own goal.

Arrows had a chance to claw their way back into the contest six minutes later when Russell Mlotshwa and Mbesuma combined to open up the Pirates defence, but keeper Senzo Meyiwa was able to tip Mbesuma’s well struck shot over his crossbar.

Right at the death both sides traded chances. Pirates’ Mark Mayambela forced Da Rocha to keep out his low effort and deep into stoppage the visitors’ defensive wall kept out Nkosi’s in-direct free-kick inside the Pirates goal area.

I think Manyisa combined well with Jali, not that Im taking anything away from Ngobeni. Congrats Bucs though it wasnt one of the good game, but for taking three points away I salute.

dont think luck had anything to do with this win, but sheer determination of players to die for the team, the defence was intact, made few mistakes, Senzo, though his post match interview, talk like a school boy when mentioning khune, he did well on the night, as for Senzo, the sooner he becomes himself not being a Khune wannabe, he will get game time, no coach in the world would give a man who behaves and talk like a boy time in his team, unless stranded, grow up man your Khune comments are getting to my nerves, you cant always say that on tv! does this guy have a girlfriend? Khune is going to take her your so weak and pathetic!

Pirates won hands down yesterday.Arrows only treatened Pirates 3times and that was it.
But i start to suspect the refferes are against Pirates.Weekend they gave Santos a place kick inside da box coz of the keeper delaying tactics and yesterday again same thing.now i can see some other teams a buying them so that we loose games.unfortunate we will keep on collecting da points on da road till we reach the top.
can1 explain why was Arrows given that free kick inside da box?
patetic refferes they are targeting PIRATES & SUNDOWNS.
Not forgeting to congratulate those who win and those who draw is better than a loose.

@Dikobo,LeTzeze, Monkey Sos,

You guys are making kaizer monkey noises nje!! shame!! I am sorry, I know everytime we win, it does not go down well with you. We won many games even against the odds (Referees) but everytime we win you say its lucky win or fluke win. Pirates is not playing entertainment football but at least we are winning games because we have the best players who can carry the team forward even without a coach. Did you expect Pirates to outplay arrows with Krol's poor tactics?

Well done, Bucs. I always say those who undermine this Mighty Team will do so at their own peril. The Chimpanzees will just remain Chimpanzees, we don't care what they think about our team. It is a matter of time before we heat the front of the log.

I detect that Pirates fans are not happy with themselves. Kroll is a winning coach man. Live with it.

Senzo Meyiwa mistake was to handle the ball, put it on the ground, and then pick it up again. A lot of people are confused by that but the referee was correct to award an indirect free kick against Bucs..!

Krol is one lucky coach! I am a Pirates fan and I don't like his style of play but he can deliver the result. I am sure he is still on track in terms of the agrrement he had with the management but us supporters are not pleased with his style of play......He is one lucky

I also thought he handled the ball , picked it up and that is why the ref awarded the indireck free kick but no it was not so.

Meyiwa did handle the ball but the ball was on the ground and he never picked it.......He then released the ball still on the ground.....and then he picked it up which then does not suppose to result in a indirect free kick! Please check the slow motion.
