Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns draw

Posted: 19 January 2011 Time: 21:47

Mamelodi Sundowns recorded their first draw of the League season, playing to a 1-1 draw against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilians opened the scoring through Katlego Mphela, Phunya Sele Sele replied through Thokozani Mshengu, and the visitors ended the game with ten men after Lebohang Mokoena was sent off with just over 15 minutes to play after picking up his second yellow card.

The match started at a fierce pace, with play running from end-to-end as both teams set out to play attacking football. Sadly, the venue was barely half full by the time of kick-off but those that did make the effort to come out were treated to some fine entertainment.

Sundowns very nearly opened the scoring within the first five minutes, as Mabhuti Khenyeza forced a diving save from Patrick Tignyemb in the Celtic goal and Matthew Pattison was unlucky to see his long range effort rebound off the base of the upright.

In the seventh minute the Brazilians were rewarded for their positive start, with Katlego Mphela opening the scoring with a well-executed diving header. The architect of the goal was Franklin Cale, who played in a superb cross from the right flank.

Celtic very nearly drew themselves level just three minutes later, handing Thokozani Mshengu a shooting opportunity after some slick passing, but the winger’s low shot thundered into the post and rebounded to safety.

Both sides enjoyed periods of dominance in the remainder of the first half, though some good defending ensured that the attackers were mostly restricted to speculative long range efforts.

The exception arrived on the stroke of half time, as Phunya Sele Sele sprang away on a counter attack, Moses Spandeel found himself one-on-one with Wayne Sandilands, but he unselfishly handed Mshengu a tap-in to bring the scores level at 1-1.

And in the 74th minute Lebohang Mokoena was shown a red card, reducing the visitors to ten men. The attacker had gone down on the edge of the Celtic box under a challenge from Prince Hlela but the referee judged it to be simulation and showed Mokoena a second yellow card. Television replays suggested that Victor Gomes got the decision spot-on.

In what remained of the game, Celtic dominated possession but were unable to force home the advantage. The closest they came to claiming a winner was in the 87th minute when Bacela was presented with a sharp chance, Sandilands made a crucial save and the rebound off Matthew Booth bounced wide of the target.

In football you win some and loose.....in this case we escaped with a draw and are still 2 points ahead. Remember all teams started with zero points.

Plzstop being biased and lying. which tv replay showed that the "hired" referee was spot on as you allege. The defender did not even intend to paly the ball but the man.....it awas a foul.

In anycase what simulation outside the box????? The best the referee should have done was to wave play-on as is usual case if a referee feels the infringement does not deserve to be penalised.

That was a shoking decision!!!!!

The fact is that there was contact...klaar. A unbiased referee could have let game flow.

should read: an unbiase referee could have let the game continue, without issuing a card nor foul.

The is truth in the saying God works in mysterious ways. Cale injured, Cheeseboy suspended n Majwali suspended. Our coach is now forced to include our Mozambiquan Pele Pele as an out and out winger. Equally he will be forced to include Khumalo who did a sterling job replacing Majawali who cost another goal similar to the Cheats goal.

Happy with the away point, though dissapointed again with the perfomance.

So in the first half of the season we failed to win in five games. If past seasons are anything to go by, we have a very good chance of reclaiming the championship since we normally do better in the second half of the season. We already have more than half the average points collecyted by the championship winning team in recent seasons.

It's a pitty other teams fans celebrate chasing. They have been chasing since the third game of the season but they just don't have what it takes to catch us.

March on Masandawana (I can't wait for the line-up for Sat)

Our players are collecting yellow cards like hot cakes.....and most of deservedly, really. Is Habas going to have 11 players for the SSU game on saturday? I doubt. From the TV commentry yesterday it was all players will miss the next game.

As for Habas , I think the guy needs to be shown the exit door. U can easily tell that he is Lost. I find it hard but will have to agree with those Chimpanzzes who say Downs wont win the league.Sad

Sundowns could have won that match in the first half. Just like Chelsea,it seems like their squad is ageing cause come second half, they were tired especially after the red card to Cheeseboy.

I think the referee should have let the game play on and not blow his wistle let alone stop play and show the red card.Anyway a draw against celtics away especially when you are not at your best, is better than nothing.Let's wait and see how some will cope at a packed celtics stadium against Clinto larson charged Celtics.

Ok man tell me in soccer we contact each other or not.Did you see what Hlela did to Cale, why Cale didn't took a dive. Cale see that the ball is still on his advantage. On the same inccident he was injured. But what a strike he took, a well taken shoot.
I like the players who doesn't cheat.

You r talking about Plembe masandawana, how about Papi Zothwane. The guy plays well one game and is out teh next. I think Papi is still the best attacking midfielder and he can score, create or even make Mabhudi and Mphela play and score. I think Sundowns has too many good players than they need and that is not so good. Development is practically dead at Sundowns as a result.

Operation Fire Habas continues

1,2 things not happy with.

Xulu @ RB...........not working

Mwanjali @ LB .....not working

Booth..@ CB .......average....below par

Nyandoro ...@ CM...Aging/Useless..no stamina,no vision and no plan B

Moriri....The man is DONE and out and will never win us Games

Khanyeza....@CF...when he starts games he looks a Mvela Material..
Doesn't deserve to start the game as he's useless and always commits fouls.

Mphela...@ ST..Big Headed...not 100% committed......
I was very upset with his final delivery .....
He looked average but yet he wanna play overseas.

Habas "The man who made downs untouchable under Hristo Stoichkov"

Wrong decisions,Wrong substitutions
The man is Clueless/Useless/Brainless and Lacks football brains.

Why we start a game with no Left Back,is really confusing.

@ Wonder
i can c dt we have many foreigners its not Mutizwa sky but Mwanjali. it was only the matter of time he got exposed in that position. moriri proved that he is finished, the Moriri i know was supposed to change the game but he was no where to be seen and Katlego 's heart is no longer with downs. we should let him go we can even buy Spandeel or Isaac to fill the

the abstacle between downs and success is Trot , kenneth and habbas. so fire trot, kenneth and habbas and bring back natasha to lead the team.

Well, a draw away from home is not a bad result.

Happy too that we may at last see Pelembe in the starting line-up. As for Cheese's red card, the referee was just too eager to stamp his authority and he got it wrong. There was contact, how Hlela finished the match, is a mystery. That's one person who deserved to be cautioned for his late tackles, one of which injured Cale!

Let the chasers keep chasing.

The sky is the limit!

Habas "The man who made downs untouchable under Hristo Stoichkov"

I like that my brother. Kuphi khona, even aChimpanzee cansee that Downs is going no where. No combination upfront, in the mid and backline. Our defense is usually at sixes and sevens when attacked by just one man.

As a result our players are collecting dozens of yellow cards in a month.Elsewhere Moriri would be given his retirement package.

I wish Downs fall to position 2 so that Habas is FIRED.
