Orlando Pirates get a late winner against SuperSport United

Posted: 8 January 2011 Time: 22:30

Orlando Pirates closed the gap to the top of log to just two points with a dramatic 1-0 win over SuperSport United at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Saturday evening.

Thulasizwe Mbuyane struck in the first minute of injury time to hands Bucs a win which sees them move up to third on the table just two points adrift of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Matsatsantsa, meanwhile, have dropped to just above the relegation zone and have only themselves to blame for this defeat after missing several good chances.

SuperSport handed debuts to new signings Rowen Fernandez and Mario Booysen, while Pirates went for an unusual strike partnership in the shape of Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Patrick Malokase.

On 20 minutes the first chance of the game fell to the hosts, with Lyle Lakay floating in a good cross from deep on the left flank that was headed wide of the target by Fikru Tefera.

The striker had managed to get goal-side of Rooi Mahamutsa, for which the Pirates centre-back was berated by his goalkeeper.

Pirates came close to opening the scoring just a minute later, with Clifford Ngobeni firing a long-range effort just wide of the target after a cleverly-worked free-kick routine.

On 26 minutes Daine Klate had a wonderful chance to score against his former team but, after being put through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, he was denied by a superb, one-handed reaction save from Fernandez.

The former Kaizer Chiefs keeper came up with another excellent save five minutes later, strongly pushing away a shot from Mbuyane after the attacker had cut inside from the left and let fly from the edge of the box.

On 35 minutes United were inches from taking the lead. Anthony Laffor fired a low shot on target that was only half stopped by Moeneeb Josephs – the loose ball rolled toward the goal line but the keeper quickly got up and smothered it.

Just before the hour mark Letladi Madubanya spurned perhaps the game’s clearest chance, mis-controlling after being put through on goal by a clever back-heel from Laffor which allowed Josephs to easily collect the ball.

On 67 minutes Laffor himself almost broke the deadlock, seeing his close-range effort deflected just wide of goal by Happy Jele after he had exchanged passes with substitute Kermit Erasmus.

Seven minutes later Pirates needed skipper Lucky Lekgwathi to clear off his own goal-line after Josephs had flapped at a cross from Thabo September.

Neither side looked prepared to settle for a point as the clock wound down. Pirates created a great chance to score in the 87th minute when substitute Mark Mayambela broke free down the right of the penalty area, but he was unable to direct his shot on target thanks to good defending from Bradley Carnell.

But in the first minute of injury time Mayambela picked a perfect pass into the danger area that was slid home by Thulasizwe Mbuyane, securing a last-gasp victory for Pirates.

yes the team won, its good and important but Kroll will get punished against teams who take their chances.

SSU is strugling, we need to punish them with a heavy score.

Can some1 tell us how is Lucas look around Thwala progressing, with the league looking as it is, we need to stabilise the back. Thwala and Modise must be roped in and win us the league.

Piepipi fans are so stupid, when are you going to learn to stop celebrating mediocrity?
Motlokwa my friend from Chibuku fc you know you football dude, I fully agree with you. Unlike these other idiots like Tholy whatever and his crew.
That was a fluke win. Again Krol should stop destroying our players, this is not funny anymore.
Mayambela has proved that he is a quality player; we need him in our national team.

I fully am in love with your responsible comments Bakaniya la etsho. We are not and will never be fooled let alone be deceived by comments from hypocrites like All Psl Cabbages who only see RIGHT in your insults to your team, players and technical staff. These morons bring their hooliganism tendencies here from cabbage world and they influence the likes of Motlokoa so that we are seen as hooligans too.

We are not going to adopt such filthy behaviour instead we'll give our team support especially given the period of the season. This is one period where a team doesn't at all need anything negative for stability but if we are the ones...I mean supporters doing that just to see our enemies like All Psl Cabbages happy then I reckon we are digging our own grave. I kindly urge my fellow Bakaniyas to stand behind the team...if Krol or any player have to be judged it has to be at the end of the season whether we won the league or not. If we show him the door now what are aiming to achieve given where the league is? Who's to take over? Aren't we distabilizing our team by so doing now? Whoever is to take charge is he not going to make changes and if the answer is yes then when are the combination going to click?

Please answer those questions for me to be convinced that it carries water to axe him.

All psl trophies: a win is a win, it doe n't matterhow it came.

Chiefs played the most boring football against Sundowns but still won.

Beween Chiefs and Pirates, i would say the situation is similar, but Chiefs used the best players yet Pirates did n't.

a new operation will beggin soon called OPERATION YEKANI U-Kroll.The GALAXI OF STARS need our support no matter what.

PIRATES IS THE ONLY TEAM THAT STAND A GOOD CHANCE OF WINNING IT.

we will then go back to AFRICA again and win it for the 2nd time and come back to SA and not claim to be the best in Mzansi and AFRICA.

We dont know the reason for not selecting Teko, but we know that Kroll is helping THE NAVIGAOTR get back to his best. The selection of Myambela Yum Yum, Isaac the real Ntho tse monate and Mongala indicate that Kroll is trying hard to do just what we want.

how are we going to loan out Malokase,Mabena and Mbuyane if we dont assess them, like the other big team in AFRICA does.

for loosing against Chiefs? no, no, np...This far to low.

Pirates fans asked Ruud Kroll to start with Tlou Segolela and Ruud did just that. We asked for Modise, he played Modise. He asked him to slect Mongala,Chansa,Mayambela and he is doing just that.

Why do we want Kroll to go?

Is it because he is fielding Mbuyane and Malokase.

I dont like Mbuyane as a 2nd striker but if he score goals, then what teh F.

CAN SOME1 TELL US, WHY WE MUST FIRE KROLL

Who organized the mass meeting for Pistol fans to flood Marewa’s show with emails and SMSs to fire the same SCrol you are now defending?
King , when are you going to use your time brain effectively and efficiently?

You don't have backbone. Not long ago you were campaigning for the firing of Krol. After a lucky win last night you have changed your mind. It shows that you don't have trust in both the coach and Pirates players. Today they are stars tomorrow they are cows the next day they can play as long as they score. The 2010 FNB massacre left many with serious thinking problems.

I think Pirates is the most fortunate team in the league. The last couple wins were a stroke of luck including this one. I know Pirates to be playing a very attacking, entertaining and quick passing enterprising type of game. Now, they win because other teams, well useless teams like SS cannot score and they strike that luck late in the game.
Supersports should have won the game easily yesterdy, but then, i'm glad they didnt because they also play kak.
The league race is becoming exciting. Kroll is changing Pirates to the worst.
