Orlando Pirates beat Moroka Swallows

Posted: 18 December 2010 Time: 17:35

Orlando Pirates recorded a 2-0 win over Soweto rivals Moroka Swallows at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday to move into second place on the log.

Goals from Ezenwa Otorogu and Tlou Segolela saw the Buccaneers pick up a third successive League win and close to within six points of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Birds, in contrast, are still without a win from 11 League matches and have now suffered their first defeat under the tenure of new coach Gordon Igesund.

Both teams struggled to create scoring chances in the first half. Teko Modise, back in the Pirates line-up in place of the suspended Daine Klate, was perhaps the liveliest player on the pitch and grew into the game after a somewhat erratic start.

On 29 minutes Ezenwa Otorogu had an opening in the Swallows penalty area but he was unable to get an effort away under pressure from Roger Da Costa and Greg Etafia.

Just under ten minutes later Modise almost got through the defence after an impish chip into space from Andile Jali, but the midfielder was unable to get a shot away.

But on 40 minutes the breakthrough finally came for the visitors. A poor back-header from Roger Da Costa fell invitingly for Otorogu and the Nigerian steered home a well-placed left-footed shot to put Bucs 1-0 up.

There was further drama at the end of the first half as Vincent Kobola brought down Happy Jele in the box and gave away a penalty. Lucky Lekgwathi took on the responsibility but blasted his spot kick over the bar.

Swallows came out with renewed vigour in the second half but they missed out on a great scoring opportunity in the 53rd minute. Young striker S’celo Zuma went one-on-one with goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs but ‘Slimkat’ made a great save.

Ten minutes later a terrific Siyabonga Nomvete strike had the beating of the ‘keeper but rebounded off the underside of the crossbar.

On 67 minutes Pirates killed off the game. Modise picked out Segolela with a superb pass and the winger showed great composure to control the ball and fire a low shot to Etafia’s right that put the Buccaneers 2-0 up.

There were further chances at both ends in the remaining minutes, particularly for Pirates, for whom the unfortunate Ndumiso Mabena missed a virtual open goal.

Krol krol krol!!! what a useless coach. Everyone can see Teko did not play according to instruction thats why Pirates's perfomance was better in this game. Teko was all over the pitch, Left, right and center and Swallows got confused.

The man who played according to the coach's instruction Malokase finished the game although he was no where to be seen for the better part of the game and when he was seen he missed golden opportunities. Guess what the useless Kroll does, he pulled the man who is likely to score, Otorogu and replaced him with nervious Mabena. oh!! what a useless coach we have.

Mabena is a good player, he gets in to the right positions on time to create golden opportunities for himself. The problem is he cant play under pressure so he panic when he has to finish. He is not a Pirates material. How do you justify missing an empty net unmarked. This boy must be sold to aces or Vasco or even Sundowns where there is less pressure from the media, supporters and management. he must never be played again. We have capable players in Mashego, Msowoya and gert.

Malokase is another mbuyane, he dissapear in the game. He is not putting enough pressure on the opponents. Please coach consider Msowoya and Mashego.

I think we should play with only one defensive midfield and give Teko that free role. He is such a marvel to watch. The boy is a great talent. If the sturbon Krol cant use Teko, then he must be sold to Sundowns for the sake of the country.

You could see krol was not happy because Teko proved him wrong. In his post match interview, he said he only made changes and played Teko because Danie Klate is suspended. That after Teko thanked him for the opportunity to play. I was impressed by the other pirates players who were happy with Teko's perfomance.

SlimKat appears to be panicking everytime he recieve a back pass. Whats wrong with Pirates defenders making long back passes like the one that became a killer pass to Nomvete. This is exactly how we gifted the two games to the Jazabels and it repeated itself again against Swallows. That back pass could have cost us a game.

Penalties must be taken by the likes of Otorogu, Teko and Klate. The only defender who can take a penalty really well is Lucas Thwala. That missed penalty nearly cost us a game.

@Musa,

You are off form, thats why you post such Kak. Teko must get more game time. He was actually never off form, he just never returned to the form that he was when he won the two player of the year and that's normal. I have never seen a player winning player of the year and continue every season to play at that level. That will mean he wins player of the year every season. It is possible that Teko will never reach that level again but he is still playing very well. Pirates and the country need him.

I bet my last cent, if Pirates lost the game against Swallows inspite of all the chances that Teko created, he was still going to be a scapegoat. They were going to say Pirates lost because of Teko. But pirates lost twice with a heavy score against a weak team without Teko.

Mriyo, spot on. We need to make Three signings. Mabizela for center back. Richie of Swallows for left back. And a very good goalkeeper.
