Free State Stars beat Kaizer Chiefs

Posted: 11 December 2010 Time: 17:31

A rare Itumeleng Khune error gave Free State Stars a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon.

Khune's error allowed Buitumelo Sekgobela to tap the ball home, with Chiefs looking a shadow of the side that thumped Orlando Pirates in the Telkom Knockout Final a week ago.

Chiefs did look full confidence early on and passed the ball around nicely but, against all odds, it was the home side that took the lead after Khune’s mistake in the 13th minute.

Mpho Makola fired in a long-range shot that bounced just in front of the Bafana Bafana keeper and seemed to skew of the pitch slightly, resulting in Khune fumbling the ball straight into the path of Sekgobela, who made no mistake.

Sthembiso Ngcobo should have found the equaliser for his side three minutes later, but he squandered a golden opportunity after being played in by Knowledge Musona.

The remainder of the half saw very little goal mouth action at either end. However, that was only until the final minute of the half when Khune probably produced one of the saves of the season.

Sekgobela made a break behind the Chiefs defence and found himself with plenty of time and space, but Khune was in no mood to concede a second goal and did brilliantly diving full stretch to his left to deny Sekgobela.

The second half saw a predictable pattern emerge as Chiefs produced attack after attack in search of the equaliser, while Stars seemed content to sit back in defence and hit on the counter-attack.

Ngcobo came close to scoring five minutes into the half when he got off a shot from the edge of the 18-yard area, but his effort just skimmed the wrong side of the upright.

Ten minutes later and it was Musona who missed a golden scoring opportunity when he headed over from only six-yards out when he should have done a lot better.

In the end Chiefs, despite their domination of the second half, couldn’t break the down the stubborn Free State Stars defence.

it seems you are satisfied as long as you beat Pirates. you remember African Wanderers, who beat Chiefs at all times, and still got relegated? Bay United, beating Sundowns, only to get relegated. obviously there is no relegation for KC, not in the next 50 years, but you guys should do better in even smaller games. there is no use of beating Pirates or Sundowns, and go on to lose 7 games, while they lose only two and one of them wins the league. Poor Khune, he thought he was immune to schoolboy errors?

Congratulations to FSS, they defended well after scoring that crucial goal. MY team played well and I was impressed with the substitutions as well. They showed that they are not a walk over like a certain Chibuku.

It was not meant to be, with the chances we had in front of goals, we were supposed to be 3 or 4 goals in the 2nd half. I think even if that game was played the whole weekend, we were not gonna score. But overall I'm happy with the performance of the team.

On to the next One and Congrats to all the teams that won this weekend.

well, you win some and lose some, my team tried against a fired up FSS but it was not to be, it's time to pick up the pieces and start winning again,it is so funny that whenever we lose all the other teams celebrate, but then it means we are doing something right.congrats to all the winners, come the end of the season,if we win the league no one will remember this game, remember this is a marathan rather than a cup(don't expect you to understand), Sundowns might be seen as running away with the league but that is not the case.let's wait and see
