Vasco da Gama shock Kaizer Chiefs

Posted: 27 November 2010 Time: 22:11

Kaizer Chiefs' focus on next week's Telkom Knockout Final cost them three League points after a 3-2 defeat to Vasco da Gama on Saturday evening.

Vasco opened the scoring as early as the ninth minute through a great solo effort from Johnny Armogram.

Chiefs levelled on the half-hour mark through Abia Nale, but the Capetonians regained the lead 10 minutes after the break through Sibusiso Zuma.

Substitute Fransman added a third and although Knowledge Musona pulled one back, it proved to little, too late.

Chiefs rested three of their star players – Siphiwe Tshabalala, Itumeleng Khune and Reneilwe Letsholonyane –for the Telkom Knockout Final against Pirates at the same venue on December 4.

Prior to this game, Tshabalala and Khune were on two yellow cards each, and Letsholonyane had a slight injury. Coach Vladimir Vermezovic indicated that he didn’t want to risk facing Pirates without the three.

The visitors were eager to stamp their authority on the home side from the first whistle, and it came as no surprise when Armogam surprised all when he dribbled past a cluster of Chiefs players before beating Arthur Bartman in Chiefs’ goal with a low shot to put his side on the driving seat in the ninth minute.

In an attempt to clear danger, Chiefs striker Ngcobo nearly scored an own goal in the 17th minute, but the former Free State Stars striker was lucky to see his clearance going inches wide.

Knowledge Musona almost scored in the 22nd minute, but the Chiefs striker was denied by the agile goalkeeping of Posnet Omony who parried the ball away for a corner.

Chiefs did carve some good openings. In the 28th minute Musona was neatly picked up by Jimmy Tau but the Zimbabwean striker directed his header over the bar, much to the disappointment of Amakhosi fans.

However, three minutes later, Musona atoned for his earlier miss when he set up Abia Nale, who made no mistake by beating Omony to give the home side equaliser.

After a long pass from the left, Sibusiso Zuma managed to beat Dominic Isaacs before scoring his side’s second goal in the 56th minute.

Vladimir Vermezovic opted for fresh legs and went for broke when he introduced Siyabulela Sonqwigi and Lucky Khune in place of Lebese and Ngcobo.

The move nearly paid dividends but once more Omony underlined his class when he denied Musona what could have been a second goal for Amakhosi in the 68th minute.

Fransman scored Vasco da Gama’s third goal in the 82nd minute, before Musona scored Chiefs’ second in the 85th minute.

The Soweto side were unable to draw level in the dying minutes of the game.

I guess they lost because the players are "focused on the upcoming final, " kuphi khona! this team lacks depth- it's not even funny. they only have 1 player to boast about for now next thing they'll crying bout how much they need stars from other teams. the score would have been worse had the referee not worn a chiefs jersey underneath- too many soft fouls were awarded to a certain team.
Sundowns only challenge for the league are themselves and maybe ajax cape. the rest of the teams should fight it out for 3rd, 4th, etc etc position.

I HEARD THAT IF MOTSEPE WAS TO WAKE UP ONE MORNING WITH THE MOTAUNG KINDA MOOLA HE'D JUMP STRAIGHT OUT OF THE WINDOW COMMITTING SUICIDE.

If i were a Pierats supporter I wouldnt celebrate Amakhos's loss. Pierats have a better chance of beating a Chiefs that is full of confidence that the wounded one.

Yoo we lost but its not the end of the world. The posities out of today's match is that we will apporaoch next week's match as underdogs and i know although many pierats fans are enjoying our loss today they would prefer to paly a Chiefs that is on top of its game that one that is coming as underdogs like what happended during the NOVEMBER 13 MASSACRE.

I honestly think that Dominic Isaacs is a useless player. We should get a reliable defender before we suffer more embarrassment. The likes of Lebese are also a disappointment when they get a chance.
