Robyn Johannes scores as Orlando Pirates beat Maritzburg United

Posted: 26 November 2010 Time: 21:58

Ezenwa Otorugu scored late on as Orlando Pirates beat Maritzburg United 2-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The first real chance of the game came in the fourth minute when Phenyo Mongala whipped in an inviting corner kick. Nigerian striker Otorogu rose highest at the front post to make the header, but his effort went inches wide.

Two minutes later and Shu-Aib Walters made his first save, stopping Thulasizwe Mbuyane’s weak shot, before United almost scored against the run of play – Rudolph Bester’s shot hitting the upright after some fine build-up play.

Finally, after a sustained amount of pressure, Bucs found the back of the net from an unlikely source. Johannes pounced on a poor clearance and fired his side in front with a perfectly placed shot from the edge of the area.

In the 41st minute only the fingertips of Walters kept his side from going further behind when he was at full stretch to his left to tip an Otorugu header over the crossbar.

The second stanza saw United quickly find their way back into the game when Lentjies scored the equaliser nine minutes into the half.

Johannes turned villain when he committed the foul that led to the goal, and Lentjies curled a beautiful 20-yard free-kick around the wall and into the bottom corner.

On 76 minutes Pirates nearly took the lead when substitute Tlou Segolela almost concluded a great passing move with a goal when his 12-yard shot struck the woodwork.

In the 83rd minute Bucs got their winner – though there is some dispute as to who actually scored. Mbuyane ran down the right and put in a cross which Fabian McCarthy appeared to turn into his own net, though Otorugu will claim he got the final touch.

jaa neh? Just one of not so proud kind of performances by OPFC but we did the right thing. We were eefective. At times you don't need to play fancy but just a smash a d grab game.

Congrats to Mabakaniya and i hope those who are unreasonable in calling for Mbuyane's exclusion were to eat humble pies. In fact he is a pillar for us and he might not be scoring as many as we would wish but he's contributing. My man of the match to me, taking nothing away from 'Chukwundukwe' Ezenwa, i think Oupa Manyisa was blossoming tonight.

Ayeye, Vasco ayeye!

Hey u moron grow up & post some sensible comments about the article... don't bring your stinking cabbage nonsense when the article is about Pirates & M/Utd, it's got nothing to do with chiefs. So if we do not want to accept the defeat is PSL going to arrange a replay no, Chiefs won & got the three points so shut up and move on you Fa***th....

We've begged three points & i'm happy that Krol reshuffled the team but we came out tops that's what matters the most... obviously you cant expect them to gell in the first game but competitive games is what they need.... UP THE BUCS!

how i wish that Rudi 'Madala' Krol can listen to the pee-rats fans and field all these ill discipline cows such as Modise, Mayambela, Mashego,etc...at the same time against the MIGHTY AMAKHOSI and the score will be 6 - 0 that day for chiefs!!! they will be busy trying to impress their stupid fans with modise doing those stupid shibobos, Mayambela doing Tsamayas and Mashego busy trying to kick the ball with his right foot and chiefs will be scoring non stop....

On paper every psl team has quality. Krol managed to replace 5 of his regulars with equally capable players and they did the job. Lets see what Vicks Vaporub has up the sleeves. Hopefully one team wont come with a lousy excuse that they were more focused on next week's game. As for Teko, it just shows that people know what he is capable of doing hence they are always on his case. Question is the overated Tshabalala on form or off form? Just asking.

Well Done bucs.

I have got to say that when i saw the starting line up of Pirates last night i thought that the was no way in hell they would win,but they managed to win.Plz dont get me wrong the didnt play good football, but they still managed to win and that 4 is a sign of a good team, cuz good teams win even when they dont have a good game.By the way i hope that all the Teko supports saw that the Majority of the population is right when they say that Teko must pull up his socks cuz he is a liability for Pirates and our beloved country.(Takalane wa lesele)

Tshaba is in a good form and a proof is the goal by Musona against Santos, free kick that was headed by Musona against Free State Stars and a brilliant performance against pee-rats...but i have to say I've been following Johannes career for a while now and i don't know why he decided to go to sundowns in the first place...at sundowns, players such as Manqoba Ngwenya can just prefer to renew their contract just because they getting paid without even touching the ball...'what a waste' i also think that Johannes to pee-rats was a wrong move and he is proving me wrong maybe if he didn't go to Sundowns he would one of bafanas stars by now... as for Mayambela 2 pee-rats... i can only say time will tell
